About STANLIB
STANLIB is fully owned by Liberty Holdings Limited and is a subsidiary of the Standard Bank Group.
Our largest client is our parent company, Liberty Holdings. Such large-scale, long-term investment ensures we are strongly supported and well resourced. At the same time, being a separate registered company gives us the freedom to manage our clients’ assets according to our philosophy.
We’ve built our business on the same foundation as our parent companies Standard Bank and Liberty Holdings – focusing on today while always preparing for tomorrow. This allows us to continually meet our clients’ needs no matter how they evolve.
Our head office is in Johannesburg, with regional offices in other major urban centres around South Africa and in nine other African countries, with further expansion plans afoot. This gives us the knowledge that can only come from on-the-ground presence on the continent. In addition, we leverage our group presence, which complements our own.
STANLIB was founded in 2002 when Standard Bank Asset Management and Liberty Asset Management joined forces.

OUR PHILOSOPHY
Throughout our growing business, our thinking remains the same – the belief that no two clients are the same; and an investment philosophy which dictates that thorough research informs everything we do.
STANLIB’s brand is all about focused investing, which is about finding opportunities where others may not and working tirelessly to make sure that every decision counts when the time is right.
Singular focus...
HOW WE INVEST
When there are literally thousands of variables to monitor and interpret, you not only need an eye on every ball, you need a dedicated, uninterrupted expert eye on every ball.
Our chosen business model of specialist investment teams allows the investment professionals to focus on what they do best. These small focused investment teams are the workshops where our client promise of creating financial freedom is crafted by skilled professionals. The team heads have owner-like autonomy with respect to setting their investment philosophies and processes, while enjoying the support of a shared robust business framework.
In line with the principle of focused expertise, we have partnered with several global companies to manage the ex-Africa portion of our portfolios: Fidelity, who manage cash and multi-asset funds; Brandywine, who manage bonds; and Columbia Threadneedle, who manage equities and multi-asset funds.
When STANLIB was established in 2002, our focus was mainly on in-house active investing. Since then, and in line with our core belief of providing diverse solutions in response to the needs of our unique clients, we have diversified our focus to other investment capabilities, from passive portfolios, to multi-manager, alternatives and direct property. We have also expanded into the African continent and now have offices in nine countries outside of South Africa.

INVESTMENT RISK MANAGEMENT
We assess investment risks at all stages of investing – before any asset is bought, during a transaction and afterwards, when the effects of investment decisions become apparent.
Pre-investment, our in-house in-depth research is a risk managing tool in itself. Research into macro-economics, market cycles and global and local trends lets us know which assets are likely to benefit from the current investment environment.
At the point of investment, we have systems and processes to ensure that mandate compliance is monitored.
Post investment, we identify risks that might impact a portfolio, their likelihood of occurring and the extent and impact that this risk may have at portfolio, franchise and STANLIB levels. Investment risks that are pro-actively and continuously measured include: market risk, credit risk, liquidity risk, leverage risk and concentration risks.
We also conduct thorough performance and risk analysis on all our funds. We quantify, decompose, evaluate and communicate both benchmark and peer-relative risks and returns.
All the above is overseen by the Franchise Oversight Committee, which is a governance body that ensures the investment professionals are held accountable for investment decisions in their portfolios.
OPERATIONAL RISK MANAGEMENT
At STANLIB, we have robust systems and processes to ensure business continuity despite any eventuality.
Key individuals risk is handled in various ways throughout STANLIB. At the investment level, each team has a well-documented philosophy, objective and process, which are replicable. This assures continuity in case of any key individuals leaving.
Our Group Risk Compliance team looks after disaster recovery and business continuity protocols. These are reviewed, tested, audited and updated annually. Part of these protocols is a shared offsite office facility for business continuity, which is tested on an annual basis through combined tests with business and IT.
Your investments are safe with STANLIB.
Measuring and mitigating riskOur approach to risk management is forward looking and pro-active, so should the unlikely happen, we are prepared. We therefore have a risk management framework that establishes a consistent and principle-based governance structure.
