02. History
A Proven Track Record
IDS Ingegneria Dei Sistemi was founded by Franco Bardelli in 1980 to meet the demand for highly-skilled systems engineering support in the area of defense. IDS’s early work focused on the study of the electromagnetic environment surrounding radar installations on warships and the electromagnetic analysis of military aircraft. This work resulted in the development of powerful modeling tools to simulate these electromagnetic environments and would eventually lead to the creation of the Naval and
Aeronautical Divisions within IDS. Over the years, IDS’s growing range of EMC/EMI, radar and infrared modeling tools in the naval and aeronautical fields have been complemented by a range of advanced measurement systems and the creation of IDS’s Measurement Laboratory.
In the early 1990s IDS used its expertise in radar and electromagnetic modeling to expand into the development of portable radar systems for subsoil detection and the electromagnetic modeling of airport environments. These developments would lead to an increase in IDS’s capabilities with the creation of the GeoRadar and Air Navigation Divisions. Continuous investment in research & technological development has created a range of GeoRadar products from Ground Penetrating Radar systems for geophysical and geotechnical applications to pioneering interferometric radar systems for monitoring slope movement in open pit mines. In Air Navigation, IDS’s experience in creating workflow management systems aided in the creation of a range of solutions over the years
for applications such as flight procedure design and aeronautical information management.
From 2000, IDS has concentrated on expanding its horizons with an
investment plan to develop and launch innovative and cutting-edge integrated hardware and software systems on the global market.

05.1. Naval Division
Integrated Electromagnetic Design and Verification
Since 1982, IDS’s Naval Division has been providing professional commercial solutions and engineering services to navies, shipyards and the naval industry worldwide. The Naval Division’s goal is to support naval projects throughout the entire lifecycle of a ship providing support and advice. IDS has 30 years of experience in electromagnetic ship design, covering the whole frequency spectrum from quasi static frequencies up to microwaves and infrared. The focus has been on optimizing a naval vessel’s electromagnetic (EM) performance and environment (topside and below deck) and minimizing radar and infrared signatures, hence maximizing the probability that the vessel can successfully carry out its operational missions.
To assist the design of ships, the Naval Division provides the powerful Ship Electromagnetic Design Framework (Ship EDF) software environment which is developed in-house by IDS’s laboratories. Among its many features Ship EDF includes an integrated 3D Electromagnetic (EM) mesh modeling environment, Radar Cross Section (RCS) and InfraRed (IR) analysis tools, Electromagnetic Compatibility/Electromagnetic Interference (EMC/EMI) analysis of the integrated ship and antenna systems, and a design data base to organize data and results and to provide project tracking and configuration control. The design framework is complemented by a suite of advanced RCS, IR and EMC measuring systems to accurately measure and validate the designs. In addition, the Naval Division offers FL.E.E.T., an integrated, cost effective, state of the art solution for keeping the configuration of a naval fleet under control and to automate the process of assessing the compliance of ships to a given operational mission.
At the forefront of naval platform design providing electromagnetic prediction solutions and advanced measurements systems
05.2. Aeronautical Division
Avionics Systems and Integrated Electromagnetic Design and VerificationSince 1985 the Aeronautical Division has been supporting the aviation industry with products and services aimed at improving the efficiency of their design processes in the areas of electromagnetic (EM) design and avionics. These two areas are covered by two separate departments within the Division, the Avionics Department and the EM Department.
The Avionics Department designs and develops certifiable on board software and flight control systems for manned and unmanned fixed and rotary wing aircraft. The department’s competitive advantage comes from its expertise embracing the whole development process: from requirements management through design, development, testing and validation to final certification.
The EM Department focuses on optimizing an aircraft’s electromagnetic (EM) performance and minimizing radar and infrared signatures, hence maximizing the probability that an aircraft can successfully carry out its operational missions. Using the extensive experience, expertise and best practice matured through supporting aeronautical industries, ministries of defense and research laboratories in the electromagnetic design process, the EM Department is able to tackle the many problems that can be faced by a complex project, to minimize risk, to offer optimized design solutions and to suggest the best workflows.
Customizable and expandable solutions and services in avionics, electromagnetic engineering and signature management for civil and defense aircraft
05.3. Air Navigation Division
Bringing Solutions and Experience to the AIM Environment
The Air Navigation Division develops and supports highly customizable commercial software solutions for both civil and military customers in the aeronautical fields of communications, navigation, surveillance and air traffic management. It provides integrated systems for instrument flight procedure design and ground validation, a comprehensive suite of applications for aeronautical information management, navigation aids performance assessment, radar siting and electromagnetic compatibility analysis. The Division supplies its professional commercial solutions and engineering services worldwide tailoring them to clients’ needs in order to fit their specific requirements and workflows.
The Division’s products and services span two broad segments of air navigation operations. Aeronautical Information Services (AIS) and management comprise the flow and management of static and dynamic information in full compliance with the ICAO mandate for data quality and integrity. It also includes the production of aeronautical data packages, charts and documents and provides support for the transition from an Aeronautical Information Services to an Aeronautical Information Management (AIM) system. Engineering and operations includes the development and ground validation of flight procedures, the design of airspace and the assessment of ground based and satellite navigation aids performance.
A flexible and scalable approach to aeronautical services and management, the development and ground validation of flight procedures, the design of airspace and the assessment of ground based and satellite navigation aids performance
05.4. GeoRadar Division
The GeoRadar Division designs and manufactures a comprehensive suite of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) for geophysical and geotechnical applications such as utility mapping, civil engineering, geological surveys etc. It offers the most advanced solutions, based on multi-channel and multi-frequency technology, for satisfying the most demanding needs. IDS was the first company to introduce the array concept to GPR technology which enables the reconstruction of 3D images of the underground area. IDS GPRs stand out as being the most innovative and application-oriented, providing customers with high performance, high quality and high productivity products.
The Georadar Division also pioneered the interferometric radar technology, introducing the IBIS range of products to the market. IBIS provides an innovative and unique solution to the problem of monitoring small movements of terrain (open pit mine slopes, landslides, subsidence etc.) or structures (bridges, dams, buildings, historical monuments etc.). The IBIS products allow remote, continuous real-time measurement of large areas from distances of up to 4km away.
The leading edge technology and know-how available in the GeoRadar Division also allows it to offer special, customized solutions to solve customers’ problems in the domain of the oil and energy, mining and geophysical industries.
