Ecological hydro power:
Fish friendly turbine
Due to the characteristic design and operation of a DIVE-Turbine it
is possible to realize a very
fish friendly hydro power plant. The DIVE-Turbine is of no danger
to animals that enter the turbine
chamber through the intake rake.
Therefore the DIVE-Turbine is a convincing argument in the
authorization procedure.
Fix runner blades: small gaps – little risk of injury + No gaps
between runner blades and hub.
+ Minimal gaps between runner blades and turbine vessel. The gaps
are too tiny to be a risk
for the fish.
Minimal number of runner blades – little probability of collision +
Minimal number of runner blades (3, 4 or max. 5 runner blades). It
is possible to realize a
very fish friendly design of the DIVE-Turbine with only 3 runner
blades.
Operation with variable speed – low collision speed and shear
forces + To optimize the efficiency the rotational speed of the
DIVE-Turbine is reduced in part load
operation. This means that shear forces between runner and turbine
vessel remain
constantly low.
+ Therefore also the collision speed remains low because many days
of the year the DIVE-
Turbine is running with significantly lower runner speed. Because
of the fixed blades, the
distance between runner blades remains constantly open.
Comparison of fish friendliness of DIVE-Turbine and Kaplan turbine:
Only those fish are taken into consideration, which accidentally
enter the turbine chamber through the intake rake. The total
mortality of the whole power plant is significantly lower, because
all larger fish and all fish that take a different passage around
the turbine can surpass the power plant without any damage. See for
example the mortality of a power plant with a guidance-rake system
and downstream migration bypass, where 80% of downstream migrating
fish use the bypass-passage for downstream migration.
DIVE Turbinen GmbH & Co. KG offers support in the authorization
procedure by developing a site-specific fish friendly power plant
design and calculating the individual mortality rate.

Ecological hydro power:
Fish friendly rake and guidance systems
A fish friendly power plant layout makes sure that fish and other
animals are able to migrate
upstream and downstream.
Upstream migration There are well-proven concepts for upstream
migration of organisms (e.g. fish pass).
Downstream migration
a) Inclined vertical rake with guidance and downstream migration
system
b) Horizontal rake (horizontal bars) with guidance and downstream
migration system
c) Shaft power plant with plain horizontal rake and migration
openings
guidance wall at the bottom of the rake
for tracking the migration openings
flap gate for flushing with openings
for downstream migration
