    A 460 once nugget was found inWiluna on 29 December 1897. Thepopulation exploded! Wiluna is a

    gold mine in the mid-west region ofWestern Australia. At its peak therewere over 9 000 miners at Wiluna

    this made the demand for beef highand gold miners urged the need of a

    stock route.

    A Windlass was a slow way ofmining in shafts. Two people wereneeded to operate it one at the topusing the handle to wind thebucket down to the other personwho filled it with potential gold

    bearing soil.When the soil was brought up bythe bucket someone would siftthrough it with a cradle or a pan.

    A mining pan was used to findgold. Miners would put the soil intothe pan and add some water andany gold would sink to the bottomof the pan.

    Stock saddles were usedby the stock men tocomfortably ride theirhorses. They helped thestockmen stay inbalance on the horse and

    so that they could rideeasily and affectively forlong hours.

    The branding

    iron was used bythe drovers. Itwas used to makeit easier forpeople to knowwhich animal

    belonged tothem.

    With out thebranding iron theanimals would getmixed up andsomeone couldsteal the animals.

    Cattle provided beef forthe people, although theywere hard tomaintain.

    When the cattle got to WAthey were infested withticks. The drovers tried tosell the cattle up north inDarwin, but no one

    wanted tick infestedcattle. So the Droverstook the cattle down theCanning Stock Route. Theticks love the hot stickyweather, but as theDrovers went down the

    route towards the south, itgot colder and colder, sothe ticks jumped off thecattle. Then the cowswere ready to sell oncethey reached Wiluna.
