Volunteer Profile

Talented Ladies At Work For A Great Cause
The Canadian Comfort and Remembrance Project (a quilt for families of a fallen or severely injured soldier) was introduced across Canada in the summer of 2006. In the fall, the Comox MFRC joined the cause and produced its first quilt.
Nada Seles is a volunteer who got involved in that Project without asking questions. Nada moved to Canada in 1967 with her family and never looked back. She has been living with one of her two daughters, Sgt. Zora Butler, since 1988. She has five grandchildren and she loves the role of Grandmother.
Nada has enjoyed sewing all her life and likes keeping busy, “I just have fun doing it”, she says. Nada got involved in the quilt Project because she wanted to give back to her community and knowing that a family of a fallen or injured soldier will benefit from it, makes all the difference.
Christa Wolst helped finish the quilt and shares the same thoughts about that project. Chista says, “A warm hug in the way of a quilt to the survivors of something so devastating as the death of a child or loved one just makes sense to me. Making a quilt gives that warm hug”.
These two ladies are very talented and both care for others, especially military families. It is their way of saying “thank-you” to soldiers who lost their lives for our country.
We can only say “thank-you very much for your volunteer efforts”.

The Comox MFRC has just completed its busiest six months on record and much of it was successful due to the dedication of our many volunteers.
Since September we have hosted or co-hosted seven large events. We started this crazy six month journey in September by co-hosting Rexspo 2006 with the Fitness, Sports & Recreation Department. October brought the Family Halloween Party with all the little ghosts and goblins. The MFRC, Fitness, Sports & Recreation and Wallace Gardens Community Association hosted this great event. November started with our much anticipated Spa Night and it ended with our Gigantic Indoor Trash to Treasure Garage Sale. In December we invited everyone to join us and enjoy the holiday season at our annual Christmas Open House. In February we kicked off the month with the Comox Valley Education and Career Fair and finished it off by co-hosting the Vancouver Canucks Alumni Challenge Hockey Game with the Comox Air Force Museum. All this while maintaining all of our regular programs and services.
Our volunteers play a key role in making all of these worthwhile events happen. Everyone take a bow for a “job well done”.

Awareness of Our Thoughts
An elder Apache was teaching his grandchildren about life.
He said to them, “A fight is going on inside me, it is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One wolf represents anger, fear, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, resentment, guilt, inferiority, lies, false pride, competition, superiority and ego.”
“The other stands for joy, peace, love, hope, sharing, friendship, serenity, humility, kindness, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith. This same fight is going on inside you, and inside every other person too.”
They thought about it for a minute and then one child asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?” The old Grandpa simply replied, “The one you feed.”

Board of Directors Corner / Conseil d’ administration
As winter turns to spring thoughts turn from skiing the slopes to prepping the garden. And a busy winter season it has been for staff and volunteers alike. Things started with a bang with our annual Spa Night, a great night of pampering and fun for a group of deserving ladies. Next came the first ever Trash To Treasure garage sale. Timing, as they say, is everything. The first blizzard of the season hit later that same day, virtually shutting down the Valley, but not before over $3,500 had been raised!
Fast forward to January and once again, the Comox MFRC had become a hive of activity with meetings, phone calls and plans being made for yet more special events. On February 9th, hundreds of visitors, young and old alike, took in the Comox Valley Education and Career Fair. At the same time, planning continued on the Vancouver Canucks Alumni Hockey game, that took place on February 25th to a sold out arena, exceeding our most optimistic predictions.
It’s been a brisk, challenging and exhilirating few months. All the while, our regular programs have been moving right along, from computers to Arabic, sewing to belly dancing.
An extra thank you goes out to all those special staff and volunteers who make selflessness and fun their business. If you haven’t done so yet, come to the Comox MFRC and check us out. You might be pleasantly surprised by all the services and events we are happy to provide. Here’s to a spring filled with continued successes and renewed energy!
The Comox MFRC is actively looking for Military Spouses interested in serving on our Board of Directors. Responsibilities include:
• Meetings/Committees approx. 3 hours/month• Participate/Organize fundraising activities.• Work to develop policies/ guidelines• Promote the Family Resource Centre within the community• Engage & recruit other prospective Board Members
Do you have leadership, communication and organizational skills? Are you interested in making a difference and effecting change in your community? If you’ve answered YES, we’d love to hear from you.
For an information package, please call 339-8290.
