    Dear readers,

There are not many days left until the end of 2011. Many events have affected us in the last 12 months - the media is currently report-ing on them in their reviews of the year. We have also drawn up our own personal annual report. I would like to elaborate particularly on two especially notable events:

One of these was our International Software Conference in Duisburg, Germany in June. I was very impressed by the presentations from our customers on the successful use of COMOS software. Both plant engineers and plant oper-ators spoke about their holistic software solu-tions with COMOS for efficient data manage-ment in the process industry. At the same time, these discussions also provided us with a lot of new inspiration for the further devel-opment of our software. This brings me to the

second important event in 2011. At the end of October, we introduced COMOS 9.2 and the COMOS PQM product for the pharmaceu-tical industry to the market. You can read more about this on page 13 of this edition. The strong commitment and dedication of our employees with the aim of further improving COMOS for our customers made me very proud. This customer orientation will also be reflected this coming year in the next software generation, COMOS Version 10.

In addition to software development, we will expand our worldwide service and support network in 2012. With new branches in India and the UK, we wish to provide our custom-ers with the best possible support directly on location. The dynamic and successful development of COMOS will thus continue

next year and you, our customers, take center stage!

I would like to take this opportunity at the end of this year to thank you for your excellent and close cooperation. I wish you and your family relaxing holidays, as well as health and success in 2012.

Yours Andreas GeissVice President COMOS Industry Solutions

PS: In this edition of COMOS Plant Manager, you can learn how COMOS supports new maintenance concepts and how the use of our software in the sugar industry and in building automation contributes to increases in pro-ductivity. I hope you enjoy reading about it.

Plant design at BMA made sweeter with COMOSProductive planning, modernization, and operation in the sugar industry

Substantial experience and use of state-of-the-art technology

BMA offers owner operators in the sugar in-dustry worldwide a comprehensive portfolio which is based on state-of-the-art technology and extensive know-how in the industry. The companys core competencies include solu-tions for extraction or diffusion for juice pro-duction, further processing of drained pulp or bagasse in presses and modern steam dryers, multi-stage evaporation and obtaining end products through crystallization, centrifuga-tion and dehydration. It is a leading company in the design and implementation of energy-efficient overall processes and has substantial experience in the construction of new sugar factories and refineries as well as in the ex-pansion and modernization of existing plants.

BMA has proven itself in many projects with its specialized experience and extensive capa-bilities.

The company BMA Braunschweiger Maschinenanstalt AG is primarily active in the global sugar and starch industry. In addition to the development, construction and manufacture of machines, the focus of activity is on the planning, installation and commissioning of stand-alone systems and entire process stages. Since 2007, the company has been success-fully implementing the COMOS software solution for plant design.

BMA AG founded in Braunschweig in 1853 is the parent company of the international BMA group, which has diverse subsidiaries around the world. With its 498 employees, the BMA group achieved a turnover of 95.1 million euros in 2009. The company supplies machines, devices and equipment for process-ing renewable resources on an industrial scale, in particular for the sugar industry. BMA is a competent partner for the expan-sion and modernization of existing plants as well as the construction of new plants. The scope of supply and service extends from plan-ning and consultation to manufacture, installa-tion and commissioning all the way to servic-ing and training.

plant construction at that time, a change in software was required to reduce the number of interfaces. The new software should be relatively easy to learn for the engineers and include a central data management system. Thomas Fischer, head of plant planning at BMA, explains why the company opted for

COMOS: We had a shortlist of four software providers. Ultimately, COMOS won us over with its modular concept of holistic plant management over the entire life cycle of an industrial plant by means of a uniform data platform. The possibility of successive module expansion and the problem-free linking of modules also appealed to us. BMA gradually integrated different COMOS modules into a central system at the main facility in Braun-schweig.

The Basic module from the Platform product range formed the foundation. With this module, the entire equipment, such as pipes, process tags and other objects, is described and evaluated with characteristics. The Basic module is also in use for the simple display of E&IC technology. The setup of a company-wide information portal with COMOS Basic allows fast access to quality-assured data. This means that the right information is available to the right user at the right time. The engi-neers are supported by View/WebView mod-ules with regard to read access to all data and documents.

    Demand for engineering and advice

The customers have very different and specif-ic demands. Owner operators are increasingly separating planning services from the supply of equipment. BMAs planning competency comprises many of the core procedures in-volved in processing renewable resources. The focus is on the main steps in the processing of sugar beets and sugar cane. The company has the aim of developing customer-specific, opti-mized and cost-effective solutions. For this purpose, a competent team of process techni-cians and project engineers is available. These experts rely on modern calculation tools and CAE software to carry out the planning work.

The global network of BMA service technicians and the access to a common pool of software form the foundation for working in a customer-oriented and efficient manner in all stages of the plant life cycle. The integrated COMOS Life Cycle Asset Information Management System software from Siemens allows univer-sal standardization of all engineering process-es and seamless integration of all steps throughout the entire planning process. In addition, COMOS provides all departments and disciplines with fast and uncomplicated access to planning data in the entire planning process all the way to plant management during operation. In this way, BMA optimizes sequential control processes and guarantees sustainable investment protection for plant operators.

    The heart of planning COMOS

Up until 2007, BMA plant designing worked with 2D CAD software, various Office prod-ucts and different databases. Because the company was further expanding the area of

Many pieces of information clearly structured and in two languages (example condensate circuit)

The P&ID module from the Process product range for the fast and simple creation of pipe and instrumentation flow charts with inte-grated and intelligent symbol technology was also selected. Later, the PipeSpec module was added. This module can be used to carry out modern component standardization for pipe planning with simple class creation.

Experiences and successesThe conversion of plant design at BMA was completed within one year. Data flow through-out the entire company has been greatly simpli-fied with COMOS. The experiences with the software have been extremely posi
