Tropical Forest Regeneration Project at ex‐Sebulu(1991~）

Beginning of Social Forestry

In the early 2000’s  KTI started  Social Forestry scheme by distributing seedlings to community and made contract that the logs will be bought back by KTI for their products. 

This way was quit successful for both KTI and community  peoplesaid   Let’s Plant Sengon and go for “Haji”!

KTI developed the usage of Sengon as Plywood use and also some woodworking products.(including existing barecore products)  This made us necessary to look for more material from plantation.

At 2005 Sengon species was attacked by decease “Gall Rust” and some of the community people didn’t want to plant  Sengon and some partly changed to Balsa, but at that time usage of Balsa was not yet reliable.  

At this time also KTI rushed to develop usage of Balsa material to woodworkingand also plywood and now we have steady usage for this species also.

Now using Balsa  for Doorblanksand some plywood. Difficult to dry and control thickness.

Also around 2005, some customers in Europe prefer to buy forest certification products for governmental use in their countries, and asked us to obtain FSC certification.  

But as we don’t have rights to the land occupation,  it was difficult to do it. 

After considering many types of trial , finally we choose the way of  “koperasi” method to obtain FSC, now we have connection with two koperasi which control there area to mainatain FSC certification. (Total 1200ha under control KTI)

Other manufacture (our competitor) has seen our success and followed our way, which made us very difficult to get the material back from the community. Our distributed seedling’s returning ratio is only 10‐20%, although it was more than 80% at the beginning.  

We consider “developing the Social forestry “program has succeeded and it became more popular because supply and consumption/usage has far more developed.Now the local people can buy seedling by themselves and can sell to anyone who can give them best prices.

What is a problem now

Our present stance 

Now start  considering controlling all the seedling, plantation logs under control by the Company → aiming to have our own standing logs 

We still can buy logs from our former suppliers(community) but as it is a free market, we can get reasonable quality logs in a reasonable market price, but not guaranteed. Because suppliers can sell to whoever gives them the best prices, and sometimes it is not us.
