save lives and create a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays.
Thanks to you, and the many others who participate and
donate to the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event, we are getting closer to a world where breast cancer
never steals another year from anyone’s life.

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT
On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf
Coast of the United States, devastating the land and people.
Five years later, many areas remain in need of rebuilding and
adequate safeguards. The BP oil spill has only added to the
woes of the region and again highlights the needs of the Gulf
Coast.
Join us at 7 pm on Sunday, August 29th
for a screening of the
"Defend the Gulf" video series in The Seneca Room (next to
the Centennial Leadership Center) to learn more about
what's happening in the Gulf and what we can do to help,
hosted by the Center for Community Engagement and Ser-
vice-Learning. At the conclusion of the film, we'll have a dis-
cussion led by former CCESL Director Ave Bauder '81 and
there will be opportunities to take action. Students, faculty,
and staff of HWS have made 11 trips to New Orleans on Hur-
ricane Katrina relief efforts. Please come join us to help build
the movement to restore the Gulf, make affected communities
whole, and ensure this never happens again.

run by Youth Venture on social entrepreneur-ship. There, they'll present their stories and
achievements as well as receive $500 prize
money. One of the eight teams will win the
Staples grand prize for $5,000. Winners will

ber, so don't wait. www.genv.net/staples-yse
CIVIC LEADERSHIP
Hobart and William Smith Colleges will open its 2010-2011 academic year by celebrating the power of an idea. Aaron S. Williams, the eighteenth Director of the Peace Corps, will be this year's Convocation speaker. The Peace Corps, celebrating its 50th anniversary, traces its roots and mission to 1960, when then-Senator John F. Kennedy challenged students to serve their country in the cause of peace by living and working in developing countries. From that one idea grew a federal government agency devoted to world peace. Convocation will take place Wednesday, September 1, at 5 p.m. on the Stern Lawn.
"During my tenure as Director of the Peace Corps, I was struck by the power of the idea for the agency: send Americans in peace and friendship to needy countries around the world," says Hobart and William Smith President Mark D. Gearan, who served as Director of the Peace Corps from 1995-1999. "From that fairly simple concept evolved some of the very best spirit and international development work of our country."
