About Colburn Community School of Performing ArtsThe Colburn Community School of Performing Arts (CSPA) serves students of all ages with classes in music, drama and early childhood arts education, taught by acclaimed faculty committed to providing the highest quality teaching on a modern campus designed solely for excellence in performance and education.

Founded in 1950 as an open-enrollment school, the CSPA covers a broad range of styles, age levels and degrees of difficulty. Music classes include applied musical instruction, music theory, chamber ensemble and orchestral opportunities. Dance classes through the Trudl Zipper Dance Institute offer a wide range in disciplines from ballet, tap, modern, creative, jazz and musical theatre dance. In addition to their individual studies, Colburn students participate in a variety of community outreach programs and perform in more than 300 concerts and recitals each year, many of which are free and open to the public.

The Colburn Community School of Performing Arts has been accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) since 1980 and is also a member of the National Guild for Community Arts Education.

Adaptive Music Program/Lessons for Individuals with Special NeedsThe CSPA provides a special program for adults and children with academic or learning challenges. The Adaptive Music Program (AMP) provides individualized music programming and adapted music instruction by qualified specialist Ms. Francesca Bori.

Students with special needs have the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument within a therapeutic environment designed to develop one’s own potential. This process begins with a structured music-based assessment of motor skills, behavioral, social and emotional levels, attention and communication ability. Monthly meetings with parents and yearly written summaries provide an opportunity to review the progress of the student. For more information, please contact Ms. Bori at [email protected]

For group classes, New Students must register in person during open enrollment in order to receive student ID badges/key cards. Partial payment is mandatorily due upon registration. All students must register before they can attend class. Space is available on a first come first served basis. Continuing students have two weeks of priority registration.

All Private Instruction must take place on the Colburn School campus. Individual lesson schedules are arranged between the instructor and the student. All new

students must first submit an Online Inquiry Form through our website. The information will be transferred to the appropriate department chair who will then contact

the student to schedule an informal interview/audition within two weeks of receipt. Upon completion of the interview, the department chair will determine which

Jury RequirementAs an important component of the learning experience for all students who take private lessons, a jury examination is required for all students in CSPA. Forthe 2019-20 academic year, juries will take place during the period of April 20-26. No lessons or classes will take place during this blocked off period of time. The fee for juries is included in the private lesson tuition above and is nonrefundable. The Colburn School greatly values this as an important learning experience for each student.

Students must be between the ages of 4 years old - 4 years and 11 months by the first day of the semester. The class provides musical experiences in the development of motor and ear-

training skills, hand-eye coordination, a sense of keyboard geography, finger dexterity, and concentration. This course offers pre-reading exercises to develop the child's keyboard sense.

Students must have access to an acoustic (not electronic) piano for daily practice.

The Early Childhood Program introduces young children to music and the performing arts. The curriculum is skill-based and is designed to explore music, theory, voice, movement, and

drama. Enrollment in classes is strictly determined according to the age of the child and classes themselves may be repeated if the faculty determines it would be beneficial to the child.

Classes are in high demand, and enrollment closes very quickly; waitlists are maintained once a class is closed. If your child is new to Colburn, please contact the CSPA office to learn more

about registration procedures. Please note: An adult must accompany the child for the entire duration of the class. In most classes, parents are invited to participate at the level of

involvement determined by the teacher. Only one parent or caregiver may participate in the class; siblings or other family members are not allowed to participate or sit in the

classroom. Spring Semester classes are 16 weeks in length from January - May.

Early Childhood Registration forNew Students

On MONDAY, JANUARY 6 new parents are required to enroll in-person. Dept Chair Ms. Martin will be holding informal orientations at the following times:

10:00 am - for ages 7 months - 1.5 years-old12:00 pm - for ages 1.5 years - 3 years-old2:30 pm - for ages 3 years - 5 years-old and up.

Group piano classes are ideal for the absolute beginner with no prior experience. Due to its popularity, spaces in Saturday classes are very limited. Please contact the CSPA Office to be

placed on a waiting list with the student name, and age. When a space opens up, the students on the waiting list will be contacted for an interview. Open enrollment is available for the

Tuesday and Friday classes. If your child is between ages 4-5 please refer to the Exploring the Keys class in the Early Childhood section on the previous page.

All remaining classes at the Colburn Community School of Performing Arts require a year-long commitment. Students may begin a class late in

Ideal for students who wish to learn finger dexterity and tonguing technique to one day play a woodwind or brass instrument. The recorder class builds playing skills through reading music

in a group setting while developing hand-eye coordination.

Dalcroze Eurythmics is the exploration of movement, solfege, and improvisation. The class encourages students' active listening skills and immediate physical

responsiveness. Through class activities, students internalize the music which promotes confident and accurate music learning experiences. This class is designed

specifically for students in our Suzuki Program and will expand on both Suzuki and outside repertoire. The following classes will run for 12 weeks in the spring semester.

nurtured and developed to a high level. The method requires parental participation in every lesson and in-home daily practice, and a major commitment of time. Prior to

enrollment, an extensive application process begins with submitting an Online Inquiry Form. Student placements have already been determined for the 2019-20

academic year. New students must inquire before January 15, 2020 for consideration for the following 2020-21 academic year. Children must be at least 4 years old and

The Suzuki method, founded by Japanese violinist Dr. Shinichi Suzuki (1898-1998), rests on the philosophy that every child is born with musical ability that can be nurtured and developed to

a high level. The method requires parental participation in every lesson and in-home daily practice, and a major commitment of time. Classical guitar is an incredibly accessible instrument to

children of all ages that can be played both solo and in a group class setting. The guitar is an effective bridge into both classical and popular styles of music and experience some of the

fundamentals of guitar technique taught through the Suzuki method. New students are welcome to inquire for the 2020-21 academic year and may submit an inquiry form at

www.colburnschool.edu/cspainquiry.

This group class is geared towards beginning students in Suzuki Guitar Book 1 or on Pre-Twinkle repertoire. We will develop basic ensemble and listening skills, reinforce technique, and

explore rhythm, pitch, and music theory through interactive activities. Students are required to take a weekly private lesson in addition to the group class.

This group class is for students in Suzuki Guitar Book 2. The class will focus on sightreading, playing with good tone and technique, and reading multi-part music as an ensemble. Students

will review previous repertoire and play in monthly performance classes. We will also incorporate music theory and improvisation into our playing. Students are required to take a weekly

private lesson in addition to the group class.

Book 3 for students ages 9-12 years old. Students will be placed in small chamber ensembles (guitar duos, trios, quartets) according to level. Through selected repertoire, we will work on

cueing, breathing, listening, and various ensemble skills. Students are required to take a weekly private lesson in addition to the chamber music class.

The Colburn Cello Ensemble is for intermediate and advanced students aged 11 or older. The group plays a variety of repertoire from all genres--classics, movie music, pop tunes, original

works for cello--including arrangements done by members of the group. The Cello Ensemble participates regularly in the Colburn Musical Encounter program, and will end with a

This ensemble provides advanced training and performance opportunities for high school to college-aged members of the Colburn Concert Choir and Young Men's Chorus, dual enrollment in

The Drama Program is a year-long (32 week sequential) program that begins with improvisation, body movement, and theater games, and progresses to monologue,

scene work, and character development. The program strongly emphasizes ensemble and process over product, creating a learning environment in which students are

free to explore and take risks -- to work without fear of judgment. The goal is to prepare each student for the experience of performing for an audience.

Build a quality foundation of singing skills! In this class, students learn songs together but perform as soloists. The class includes instruction in basic theory and notation, sight-singing,

performance of solo song repertoire, the physiology of the larynx, and basic vocal technique. The class features a final in-class performance at the end of each semester with performances

of solo and ensemble singing.

The Community Chorale attracts adult singers committed to learning and performing sophisticated repertoire, meeting weekly to foster musical and artistic development through

Courses in music theory are critical to every student's musical education. The CSPA offers courses starting with Dalcroze Eurythmics, which is the exploration of movement, solfege, and

improvisation. Dalcroze encourages students' active listening skills and immediate physical responsiveness and continues with Introduction to Music Theory, which covers the most basic

reading skills for beginning musicians. Through class activities, students internalize the music which promotes confident and accurate music learning experiences and gradually lead to a

consideration of advanced chromatic harmony and 20th century techniques. All classes incorporate appropriate solfege and rhythm practice. Courses are year-long and require enrollment

in both the Fall and Spring semesters. Some students may be placed mid-year, depending on written evaluation performance. All new students require written placement evaluation and pre-

approval from the department chair, Ms. Sawada. Written placement evaluations are available at colburnschool.edu or at the CSPA office. In-person assessments are required for younger

students between the age of 5-7 to determine readiness for Dalcroze Eurythmics/Beginning Musicianship class as well as placement into Dalcroze II, III or IV.

The CSPA offers one of the most comprehensive and intense pre-college level chamber music learning experiences of any music school in North America. Students are coached weekly by

members of Colburn’s nationally acclaimed faculty. Ensembles from the Institute have been prize winners in numerous competitions, including the Fischoff Competition, Coleman Chamber

Music Competition, the Young Artists Peninsula Music Festival, and have appeared on the nationally syndicated Public Radio International series From the Top. Participation in this program

Community School of Performing Arts Policies At the Colburn School, we strive for open communication between faculty, students and administration and ask that you familiarize yourself with the summary of our school policies below. The complete school policy can be found on our website at colburnschool.edu

Registration ProcedureThe registration procedures at The Colburn School are designed to place students in appropriate courses through interviews, a uditions, and other screening methods. These procedures help to minimize enrollment in inappropriate courses, and to minimize the need to drop lessons and classes. Regist ration must be completed during the Formal Registration period listed on page 1 of this Schedule of Classes to avoid a late fee. Any student who registers after the Formal Registration period will be subject to a $25 late registration fee.

All students are required to commit to a full year of study for approximately 32 weeks during the fall and spring semester. T here are only three exceptions to this rule: 1) a student in the early childhood program is required to only commit to one semester for 16 weeks, 2) adult students over the age of 18 may commit to a mutually agreeable schedule with their individual lesson instructor that is less than 32 weeks, 3) new students who have never studied at Colburn may join at any ti me during the year, pending studio/class availability, and may register for the remaining number of weeks.

Students beginning group classes after the start of a semester will be charged tuition on a pro -rated basis, as follows:For semester-long classes: Weeks 1-4: 100% of tuition, Weeks 5-8: 75% of tuition, Weeks 9-12: 50% of tuition, and very rarely may students begin during Weeks 13-16: 25% of tuition. For year-long classes: Spring tuition has been updated to reflect joining mid year at 50% of tuition. Class fees are not pro-rated for the summer session.

Jury Requirement: As an important component of the learning experience for all students who take private lessons, a jury examination is require d for all students in CSPA. Adedicated week of juries will take place April 20 -26, 2020. The Colburn School greatly values this as an important learning experience for each student.

Drop/Withdraw ProcedureThe parent/student must complete and submit the Drop Form either in person, via email or fax, prior to the first day of the s emester. Once receipt is confirmed by the CSPA office, prior to the first day of the semester, the request to drop the class, ensemble, and/or private instruction will be reviewed by the Dean. Upon the Dean’s approval, 100% of the tuition is refunded. Anytime during the first week of the semester, 75% of the tuition is refunded. After the first week through the second week, 50% of the tuition is refunded. After the second week through the third week, 25% of the tuition is refunded. After the third week, there are NO REFUNDS.

Informing an instructor of a decision to withdraw, stopping payment, or not attending class does not constitute a withdrawal. Exceptional requests for refunds due to a family or medical emergency may be made in writing to the Dean within 14 days of the missed class and must include appropriate document ation. There is no guarantee that a full refund will be approved due to a family or medical emergency.

Absence PoliciesStudents must notify faculty of anticipated absences as a courtesy to the faculty members; however, this does not exempt the student from payment as contracted. There will be no makeup lessons for student absences. If a teacher is absent from a scheduled lesson, a make -up lesson shall be scheduled at a mutually convenient time. If the student misses a make-up lesson, there will be no second make-up opportunity. In cases of sudden illness on the part of the teacher, the teacher and The School shall make every reasonable attempt to notify students.

Suspension Delinquency in payment of tuition and fees may result in suspension of a student's enrollment. Suspended students shall not b e allowed to attend classes, rehearsals, or lessons; instruction shall be resumed only upon full payment of any balance due and with approval of the Registrar. There will be no c redit or make-up for any lessons or classes missed because of suspension.

PaymentsPayment must accompany the registration form. Payment of tuition and fees is expected in full at the time of enrollment unles s a payment plan is requested. Upon approval of a payment plan, all payments are due on or before the 15 th of the month. All payment plan arrangements must be made directly with the Cashier’s Office. Any payments received after the 15th will be automatically assessed a $25 late fee. Subsequent late fees will be charged every month until payment is received.

Private InstructionAll private instruction must take place on campus at The Colburn School at 200 South Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, CA

Key Card Access/Student ID BadgesIn an effort to enhance campus security, each family will be given two key cards to access the building at all times. All stu dents must request a key card at the security desk on Grand Avenue and show proof of current enrollment. Key cards will be required to enter buildings, access elevators and use of the l ibrary. Please pay attention to posted signs and requests made by security guards to show your card key. Lost card keys can be replaced for a fee of $25.

Parking With a student population of 1,800 students, parking at the Colburn School is not guaranteed. A limited number of spaces are available to CSPA families on a first come first served basis. Families can receive up to two parking decals upon completing registration . However, a parking decal does not constitute a guaranteed parking space . On a busy day when there is a line of cars waiting to enter the garage, students may be dropped off in front of the school on Grand Avenue. Ther e is a loading area in front of the doors across from the Broad Museum. After dropping off your student, please make your way to Lower Grand and patiently wait in line for a parking s pace to open in the garage. If you do not wish to wait for a spot to open, offsite parking at a discounted rate is available at Lot #3 on the southeast corner of Olive and 2 nd Street. Please inquire at the Cashier window to purchase validations in advance.
