Dangerously Uninformed: The Connection Between Religion and Violence with Dr. Clark Kelly James Clark is a faculty member in the Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies and the Kaufman Interfaith Institute at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Hayes Auditorium The True American tells the story of Raisuddin Bhuiyan, a Bangladesh Air Force officer who dreams of immigrang to America and working in tech- nology. But days aſter 9/11, an avowed "American terrorist" named Mark Stroman, seeking revenge, walks into the Dallas mini-mart where Bhuiyan has found temporary work and shoots him, maiming and nearly killing him. Two other vicms, at other gas staons, aren’t so lucky, dying at once. The True American traces the making of these two men, Stroman and Bhui- yan, and their fateful encounter. It follows them as they rebuild shaered lives - one striving on Death Row to become a beer man, the other to heal and pull himself up from the lowest rung on the ladder of an unfamiliar country. A Community Against Hate Crimes The Michigan Civil Rights Commission and Department of Civil Rights investigates and resolves discrimination complaints. Join us as Mark Bishop from the Michigan Department of Civil Rights speaks about hate crime statistics in our area and how communities can come together to combat hate. He is the author, most recently, of The True American: Murder and Mercy in Texas, about a Muslim immigrant’s campaign to spare from Death Row the white supremacist who tried to kill him. Anand Giridharadas will be speaking about his book The True American. This visit is sponsored jointly with Grand Valley State University. Wednesday: March 22 7:00pm-9:00pm Hazel B.
