    How to Weigh a Population

    How to Weight a Population

    1. First determine which year you would like to weight the population according to, either by what year is given in the Infoshare data or the one which you choose. (For example, the year 1998.)

    2. For any years between 1991 and 1999 you will need the 1990 census and 2000 census data to calculate the weighted population for those years.

    3. For the specified year of your choice, multiply the fraction stated with the 1990 Cenus and add that with fraction multiplied by the 2000 Census.(See Total)

4.The fraction represents a percentage (0.9=90%) and thus the logic behind weighting a particular year can be seen by multiplying the percentage of the census which correlates to the specified year. For example the year 1998 has 0.2 (20%) of the 1990 Cens

The numerator is the number of deaths of infants under 1 year old in a given year (here 1997-1999 average). The denominator is the total live births for that same year/period (again 1997-1999 average). Multiply by 1000; (PH28)

The numerator is the number of live births under 2,500 grams during a given time interval (here 1997-1999 average). The denominator is the number of live births reported during the same time interval (here again 1997-1999 average). [Principles of Epidemiology p.116]

    Age Adjust

How to Age-Adjust Death Rates in a Population

    1. From the 1990 and 2000 Census data, copy data for the population distribution by age.

    2. Organize the raw data into the specified categories below.

    3. Use the 1990 and 2000 data to obtain a 1998 weighted population of the specified categories.

    4. Using the 1997-1999 average NYS Health data, copy the data for number of deaths by age.

    5. Copy the HP2010 standard population.

    6. Calculate age-specific death rates for your population by dividing the number of deaths in an

age group by the number of people in your population in that same age group.

    7. Calculate expected deaths for your population by multiplying the age-specific death rates

    by the standard population.

    8. Add all the age-specific expected deaths.

    9. Calculate the age-specific death rate by dividing the sum of the expected deaths by the total

standard population and multiply by a constant.

*You can use the table below to help organize your data.*

The amount of physicians needed was calculated by: (3.5 average visits of a person in a year * total population for the specific year [1995]) / 4200 appts per physician

This is an estimated value using the formula described

This is the actual number of physicians according to NYS Dept. of Health, 1995

See 'Raw Data' worksheet for detailed calculations

See worksheet 'How to Age Adjust Death Rates' to learn this procedure

See Raw Data section for calculations

See worksheet 'ACSI Categories' to calculate the individual values

The numerator is the number of deaths of infants under 1 year old in a given year (here 1997-1999 average). The denominator is the total live births for that same year/period (again 1997-1999 average). Multiply by 1000; (PH28)

The numerator is the number of live births under 2,500 grams during a given time interval (here 1997-1999 average). The denominator is the number of live births reported during the same time interval (here again 1997-1999 average). [Principles of Epidemiology p.116]
