    Dale Monson

  • Dear Friends in Christ,

In my file of favorite jokes and

    illustrations, I recently

    rediscovered an old Ann

    Landers column filled with

    unusual interpretations of

prayers on the part of small

    children. I particularly like the

    one reported from Missoula,

Montana, “My son, who is in

nursery school said, ‘Our Father, who art in heaven,

how didja know my name?’” We may get a little laugh

out of the young child’s prayer, but at the same time, it

also points us to something more serious – something

we could stand to be reminded of.

Of course, a great review of the most foundational parts

of our Lutheran Christian faith can always be found in

Martin Luther’s Small Catechism. Contained in this

concise pamphlet are the clear explanations of what

Lutherans believe about things like the Lord’s Prayer,

The Apostles’ Creed, and the 10 Commandments.

Originally written for the instruction of children, The

Small Catechism has always been a main teaching tool

    for Lutherans of all ages.

In terms of the child’s question, “How didja know my

name?” we might all benefit from a refresher on

Luther’s explanation of the first article of the creed, “I

believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven

and earth.” Luther beautifully and memorably explains

the profound meaning of this article for you, me, and all

    Christians as he writes:

I believe that God has created me and all that

    exists.

He has given me and still preserves my body and

    soul with all their powers.

He provides me with food and clothing, home

and family, daily work, and all I need from

    day to day.

God also protects me in time of danger and

    guards me from every evil.

All this he does out of fatherly and divine

goodness and mercy, though I do not deserve it.

Therefore I surely ought to thank and praise,

    serve and obey him.

    This is most certainly true.

So you see, God knows your name because God

carefully created you. But, that’s not all. God

continues to sustain you, provide for you, and protect

you every day of your life! Thanks be to God. AMEN.

    Sincerely in Christ,

    Pastor Erik

    “Parents, Pastor, Parking Lot”

Near the start of the pandemic the U.S.

Government created the “PPP” loan program.

Since that was such a catchy name, it was decided

CCLC should have our own “PPP” ministry

program. Our program will be exactly what the

name suggests: “Parents, Pastor, Parking Lot.” On

Sunday mornings in October, while the kids are in

Sunday school and the parents are forced to wait

outside in the parking lot, Pastor Erik will lead a

guided conversation about life during the

“pandemic. This will be an opportunity for par-

ents to share highs and lows and support one

“another in the midst of a difficult fall season.

Thank you to everyone who teaches, leads, and

mentors the children in our congregation! On

Confirmation Sunday, the 9th graders all mentioned

how much your time and attention meant to them

to hear how much you’ve “touched their lives with the

Music Ministry during this challenging time:

Thank you to everyone who has stepped forward to provide special music for

our summer outdoor services! We’ve enjoyed hearing from youth pianists,

accordion, special music singers, music from 3YJ, and beautiful instrumental

pieces from Marsha Gullickson and Sandy Knight. The music that all of you

have provided has been an inspiration, and a “little bit of normal” for our

    congregation. We are so grateful!

Starting in October, we will be moving back inside for worship. This will

present a whole new list of challenges, and also opportunities! Our Jubilation

Ringers Bell Choir has begun rehearsing, and will be providing music for some of our early services

moving forward. Thank you to all who are ringing!

While we are working on creative ways for our Chancel Choir to provide music for services, now is the

time, more than ever, to come forward and offer your talents to enhance our worship services through

music. If you play an instrument, sing, and/or have any musical gifts that could become part of our

worship services moving forward, we want to hear from you! Please reach out to Jamie at

952-239-6730 or email at [email protected] .

If you’re not a musician, I ask you to pray for our music ministry, that we will be able to safely offer

music that will add to our worship services, and help us all hear the message of the Gospel.

On a final note, I want to say that while we are in the midst of a pandemic, something none of us have

ever experienced, we can still worship together in ways that are safe and comfortable for everyone. We

have our livestream that anyone can view in real time, or watch later as a recording. We will have safe

social distanced spacing in our worship spaces once we move inside. We also all have the power of

prayer. Pray, pray, pray! Pray for an end to this pandemic, and for the ability to come together as we

have before, to worship and give praise to our Heavenly Father.

    Stewardship: A Year of Celebration

The theme for this year’s Stewardship emphasis is A Year of Celebration. Although God gives us numerous

reasons to celebrate his love and kindness on a daily basis, our congregation at CCLC has a monumental

achievement to celebrate throughout the upcoming year. What is this you may ask? Good question! As some

of you may know, but probably most do not, on October 3rd, 2021 we will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of

the first worship service of Community of the Cross Lutheran Church!

In the next year, we will be Celebrating the many blessings that God has bestowed on CCLC and as a result

the amazing acts our ministry programs have been able to achieve as a result of God’s Grace in our community.

To that end, we are hopeful that you would prayerfully consider partaking in this Celebration with a gift to one

of the following important tenets of our faith community.

Buildings and Grounds - Although the buildings and grounds commission has an annual budget and specified

account, as we plan for the future, it is of particular importance to emphasize how we should always be

planning for what is to come. The normal lifespan of a boiler system, such as ours, is 25 years. Our boiler is

currently 30 years old. Imagine if it went out, we would be in for some cold Sunday mornings!

The Endowment Fund - You may only hear about the Endowment Fund once a year at our annual meeting,

yet this is an essential part of building for future generations at CCLC. The more we plan for the future, the

    brighter that future will be!

Ministry Programs - The true lifeblood of our Congregation. Whether it is working with the children and

families in our own Community of the Cross or serving those in the world around us, it is what we do as

ministers of Christ’s word that will ultimately define the future of CCLC and society at large.

Throughout this year we will give examples of what has been a truly amazing 50 years at CCLC.

Something to Celebrate...In these 50 years we have baptized 589 new members into the promise and the

    grace of God’s love!

    Celebration Sunday

    November 22, 2020

  • Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him.

Praise the Lord with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre. Sing to him

a new song, play skillfully, and shout for joy. For the word of the Lord is right and

true; hid is faithful in all he does. Psalm 33:1-4

This is the time of year when I traditionally remind you to get your flu shot. I am still

going to remind you. In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, you don’t also want to

have the “normal” flu. If you should happen to get both at once, the doctors don’t

know the best way to treat you. Also, since many people are hospitalized each year

with the flu, hospitals could rapidly reach capacity again. The doctors and nurses have

been working very hard since all this started; they don’t need more to add to their load.

At this time the bloodmobiles are still not able to hold blood drives, but they are in need of blood for patients

who would normally need it, such as accident victims, surgical patients. or people with internal bleeding for

any reason. If you are able, please call or go online to Memorial Blood Center and make an appointment to

give at one of their donation centers. Younger people are especially encouraged to give (you can give as young

as 16 with your parents’ permission, and if you meet certain height and weight requirements), as many of our

long-time donors are no longer able to, due to age, health, travel or medication issues.

The Tuesday morning Bible study will be starting on the gospel of John, doing a study by Max Lucado. We

meet in either the gathering space or fellowship hall, socially distanced, with masks, from 10:15 until about

11:30 on Tuesday morning. We do some serious study, but we also spend time getting caught up with each

other’s lives and having a lot of laughs, which are so essential to our health and wellbeing right now. We

always welcome new people to join us.
