It was touch and go, but good weather prevailed for the community Easter Egg Hunt, Saturday, March 26. Children were assigned hunting areas according to their age and off they went.

The youngest kids, ages 3 and younger, went to the playground area behind the Clubhouse while older kids had fun

hunting on the beach among the abun-dance of new driftwood blown in from the March storms. Kids 7 and up went west of the dock - no farther than the stream - while the 4- to 6-year-olds went east with Mom and Dad. (more on page 5)

APRIL2016

Led by Matt Reilly, dog Izzy and family, older kids are escorted down the street to the beach to start hunting “shells”.

Sayde Mae Wagoner waited at the top of

the stairs with her basket of eggs.

There’s been a change at the Indianola Post Office. Sadly, our postmaster, Scott Quast, has taken the position as postmaster in Port Hadlock which is considerably closer to his home. Our post office is undergoing a review and may be reclassified so that it is manned by clerks with no postmaster position.

The Indianola Garden Club will be joining with the Kingston Garden Club for our April 20 meeting. Because it will be at the Kingston meeting sight, which is Bayside Church in Kingston, the meeting will be at 9:00 AM for the social time, and 9:30 for the program part of it. There will also be a brief business meeting after that. Remember to park in the back.

The program for this month will be a presentation by Sue Goetz, and the topic is “Fool Proof Perennials”. The hostess duties will be shared with Kingston, and our hostesses are Mary Richards, Jill Hayes and Sue Milling. Hope to see you there.

The weather did cooperate for our March tour of Heronswood, and the tour was enjoyed by all there. If you have Garden Club questions, call Nancy at 297-1245 or Sue at 297-3473.

Indianola Garden Club is having their Annual Plant Sale on April 30th. It will be from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Pavilion. In addition to many plants for sale, garden tool sharpening will also be available for a nominal fee.

Aristotle had it right when he said, “The more you know, the more you know you don’t know.” Back in 350 B.C.E, he was most likely talking about philosophy when he said this. Yet, nearly every day, I find myself ruminating over how that quote applies to so many things, and I am not talking about philosophy.

Like, how about your septic system? You know if you’ve got one; you know you need to pay attention to it. Is the next sentence ‘you know you don’t know’ what you should be doing about it? Have I got a deal for you. The IBIC has booked a Septic Workshop with the Water Stewardship Program of the WSU Kitsap County Extension on June 21st from 6 - 8 pm in the Clubhouse to cover all things septic. They will even provide snacks and a free green cleaning kit. More publicity and information is forthcoming, but you can put that on your calendar.

How about the status of our beloved Indianola Beach? You know it is there, and you love it, but do you know how it fared after the February storms?

You have a chance to know that and much more by participating in our April 23rd Beach Cleanup. See the article in this Breeze for more information. Thank you, Pam Dassel, for organizing this!

How about stabilizing your high bank property? We have the opportunity to have a speaker come and talk to us about this critical topic. If enough of you let me know you would be interested, I will proceed with plans to make this happen. In the meantime, check out this great pamphlet, “Your Marine Waterfront”, at http://wdfw.wa.gov/publications/01791/ . Thanks to Niki Quester for getting me this information and being our link to the WSU Kitsap County Extension.

I was planning to begin this message with a tie in to the upcoming presidential election, but I would have to say, forgive me Aristotle, “The more I know, the more I know I don’t know, and maybe I don’t want to know.”

See you around town!

High School••• Students •••IBIC offers opportunity for Community Service Hours

If you are a high school student, the IBIC is offering you an opportunity to gain community service hours helping on Beach Clean-up Day, April 23 or by manning the Saturday Market merchandise table.

If you are interested, simply contact Paul Larson at [email protected] for details. Also, if anyone else would like to volunteer we’d be glad to have you.

In years past, in April, near Earth Day, Indianola folks have pitched in to collect debris on our beach… tires, styrofoam, plastics, netting and glass… leaving it more natural for people to enjoy, and safer for the animals who call it their home. There will be plenty of beach that morning… a minus tide at 12:33 pm. It will be fun and rewarding. Hope you can come.

At 10:00 AM we will meet at the head of the Dock, where we will provide gloves, orange plastic bags for garbage and white plastic bags for recyclables. We hope to have enough volunteers to collect the length of the beach from the end of the Spit to the Enschede stairs. We will split up to cover segments of the beach with drop off points being at four accesses; the Enschede stairs, the Dock stairs, the

Western Avenue boat launch and the Indianola Beach Preserve. if you have a pickup truck and can collect at these sites about noon, that would be terrific. We will dispose of the recyclables in the Clubhouse bin and take the garbage to the Hansville landfill. There will be no charge to the community for dumping the garbage or for supplies. The Kitsap County Public Works Solid Waste Division is providing this support. Our tax dollars at work!

Please contact Pam Dassel (360-297-2238) if you can offer a truck or if you want to jump into helping distribute supplies on that morning.

Students can receive community service hours for this very awesome event. Will have forms available.

Egg Hunters Find a Treasure Trove on the Beach

AGolden

Egg!

Clockwise, at top left: Kids waited at the bottom of the stairs for everyone to catch up. Then it’s off to hunt for plastic eggs in the driftwood. Will Fitch found a Golden Egg with a gift certificate in it from the Indianola Country Store and, being the big boy he is now, he treated his brother, sister and himself to ice cream, candy and chips. Olive Trueb and Annabel Reilly combed the beach as a team. The Reilly’s dog, Izzy, accompanied Timmy Clark who found more eggs among the rocks. Chloe Franklin delved into her basket. A youngster on the east side found an egg stuck in a log. Glad to say there was enough for all.

March starts with a bang and ends with a breeze...

We seemed to see a storm a week in March starting with the one on March 1st that downed trees, knocked out the power, stirred up the bottom and clogged up access to the beach with driftwood at the bottom of the stairs.

Then came the end of March, with light breezes, beautiful skies, warm

days and low tides to the delight of the beach walkers and kids in swimsuits.

Could it be, spring is here?

Just when we thought it wouldn’t end, rainbows appeared... a good sign of better weather to come.

See the Breeze in COLOR on our web site: www.indianola.clubClick on THE BREEZE and find this month’s issue.

Chloe notices that the bottom treads of

Big Rock stairs washed away.

The storm drain outfall under the Dock was

bashed by logs.

We need a new chairperson for Indianola DaysAfter 5 fun years of running Indianola Days, it is time to pass the torch to someone else!

We are looking for a new chairperson. This job is not as big as it sounds, thanks to our MANY wonderful volunteers and returning event chairs. Indianola Days 2016 is the weekend of July 23rd.

Thank you to everyone who has worked to help with Indianola Days celebrations year after year!

At the start of each year, the Indianola Beach Improvement Club (IBIC) calls for its current members to renew memberships, and welcomes newly joining members into the club.

This year the IBIC will be updating its Member Directory - the last directory was issued in 2011. This handy little address booklet is a vital way to help members keep in touch. Include yourself.

When you join you will also receive a parking permit upon request which allows you to use the parking lot just up from the Clubhouse.

But most of all, your membership dues and welcomed donations keep Indianola’s most

prized and useful assets - the Clubhouse, Gill Park, Merrill Pavilion, McClung Park and beach accesses - maintained properly.

These facilities are used by many Indianola organizations, girl scouts, the Port of Indianola, and others. They’re an excellent venue for parties, weddings, memorials, informational seminars, soup and chili cook-offs, salmon dinners, social gatherings and so much more.

And we have learned that because of these facilities, our residents have increased property values - and the opportunity to make friends and help others in need - what we call life values.

Welcome to the Club!

Please join the IBIC • Go to www.indianola.clubAt the top, click on THE CLUB and drop down to “Join or Renew”

~ What Is That Thing Anyway? ~

If you’ve visited the Indianola beach in the last, say, 60 YEARS, you’ve seen a big wood block down there. As kids, many of us remember it as a splintery, creosoted monstrosity. It wasn’t a part of the Indianola dock. So, what is it?

It’s called a camel. As explained by resident Bill Sibbett, it’s a World War II-era “boat bumper” used to protect the docks from big Navy ships. Bill thinks it might have come from the Bremerton shipyards and said they were filled with styrofoam. One thing’s for sure. It hasn’t budged since it washed ashore - whenever that was....
