    INVITATIONS TO COMMENT

    Hawker Group Centre Proposed Improvements andLand Release Information Session Today

    As part of proposals for the potential release of Blocks 8 and 10 Section 34Hawker, the Land Development Agency (LDA) has been consulting businesseslocated in the Hawker Centre and the broader community regarding options forimproving and upgrading the centre.

    Shoppers and other interested people are invited to comment on the options forthe Hawker Centre at an information session.

    When: Today from 10:30am to 1:30pm

    Where: Hawker Centre near the childrens playground at the rear of the TAB. Ifinclement weather the session will be held at the Christ Church in Hawker Place.

    Interested members of the public are invited to drop-in anytime between the above

    hours to view the materials on display and to provide feedback to the LDA sta .

    Plans of the proposals for the centre, including a video artists impression willbe on display at the information session. Some of these details will be made

    available on the LDA website www.lda.act.gov.au following the information

    session. The period for comment closes Monday 12 July 2010.

    Call for Community Comment on Applications forRegistration of Non-government Schools at AdditionalEducational Levels.

    In accordance with the Education Act 2004, the ACT Department of Educationand Training is seeking written comment from people who are interested inthe proposed registration of the following non-government schools that havereceived in-principle approval to expand to additional educational levels:

    Brindabella Christian College, 136 Brigalow Street Lyneham is currentlyregistered for kindergarten to year 10 and has applied for registration for years11 and 12.

    Islamic School of Canberra, 22 Heysen Street Weston is currently registeredfor kindergarten to year 6 and has applied for registration for years 7 and 8.

    Copies of the applications will be available for inspection by members of the

    public during normal business hours on prior notice of at least one business day.The applications are kept within the Non-government Education Section of theDepartment of Education and Training.

    Strategic Review of Sport and Recreation Facilitiesaround Lake Burley Grin

    Review of Police Criminal Investigative Powers

    On 14 May 2010, ACT Attorney General, Simon Corbell released the Review of Police

    Criminal Investigative Powers Discussion Paperfor community consultation. ThePaper proposes the modernisation of police powers and advocates the possibleconsolidation of general police powers into a single piece of legislation.

    The Paper also explores the manner in which safeguards and protections forcriminal suspects and people in police custody are framed and the thresholdsat which police ocers are able to exercise powers such as stop, search andarrest.The Paper also advocates the repatriation of important protectionsand safeguards for people arrested by police which are currently found in the

    Commonwealth Crimes Act 1914.

    The community is welcome to make submissions to the review and can access

    the Paper on the Department of Justice and Community Safety website:www.justice.act.gov.au

    Deadline for submissions extended to 16 July 2010.

    Wheelchair Accessible Taxi Survey

    The ACT Government is inviting Canberrans to have their say on accessible taxiservices.This feedback will be usedto improve service levels and regulation.Canberrans can complete the survey online at the TAMS website. Topics coveredin the survey include waiting times, vehicle maintenance, accuracy of fares anddriver booking systems.

    Proposed change to the Territory Plan Residential ZonesDevelopment Code and Lease Variation General Code

    The ACT Planning and Land Authority has released draft variation 303 to theTerritory Plan that aims to incorporate leading practice solar access provisionsinto residential housing development codes.

    The draft variation seeks to tighten up the rules on overshadowing, ensuringneighbouring blocks get sunlight when it is most needed during winter.

    The proposed change also includes new rules for secondary residences,sometimes referred to as granny atsthat will provide greater opportunities forsmall additional dwellings.

    The period for comments on thedraft variationcloses on23 August2010.

    Fix My Street

    Canberrans can now report neighbourhood issues such as cracked footpaths,potholes, grati and grass mowing any time of the day to the ACT Government

    using a newly refreshed online service called Fix My Street.

    Fix My Streetcan be accessed through www.act.gov.au and

    www.canberraconnect.act.gov.au.

    To report a problem, Canberrans need to simply ll out a form, give a briefdescription of the problem and the location and click the send button. Users canidentify the location via a clickable map and upload photos to accompany theirreport.

    By registering for an account, users can also login to see the response from theGovernment and the progress on their request.

    New Fees

    Territory and Municipal Services (TAMS) wish to advise the community that from1 July 2010, new fees will be introduced covering areas such as ACTION bus fares,parking fees, vehicle registration, taxi fares, waste and recycling.

    ACT Natural Resource Management CouncilExpressions of InterestNew Members

    The Council is a non-statutory skills-based body of six members appointed by theACT Government to make recommendations and manage strategic investmentsthat maintain, protect and enhance natural resources in the ACT. The Council alsoprovides leadership and guidance in integrated natural resource management inthe ACT.

    Expressions of interest are sought to ll two vacancies: an Aboriginal memberand a member with expertise in primary production.

    Aboriginal council member

    Applicants applying for this position should posses:

    a demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslander peoplesand societies and cultures and an understanding of the issues

    aecting these people in contemporary Australian society; and experience of or an understanding of ways that Aboriginal people can be

    engaged in natural resource management.

    Primary production council member

    Applicants applying for this position should possess:

    a demonstrated knowledge and understanding ACT region primary production;and

    experience or an understanding of ways in which the ACT primary producercommunity can be engaged in natural resource management.

    Applicants for both positions should have an experience of or an understandingof natural resource management practices and their application in Australianland management.

    Council members are appointed by the Minister for the Environment, ClimateChange and Water for a three year term. Members receive a per diem sittingfee. The Council meets every two months and additional meetings are held asrequired.

    Assistance for Children with a Hearing or VisionImpairment

    Do you have a child who is not yet of school age and who has a vision or hearingimpairment? Specialist teachers employed by the ACT Department of Educationand Training support children with a sensory impairment and their families.

    This support contributes to the childrens readiness for more formal schooling. Ifyour child is not already receiving support from the Hearing or Vision Inclusionteachers please contact the Disability Education Section of the ACT Departmentof Education and Training on 6205 6925.

    Supplies of Inuenza Vaccine for the Private Market

    Supplies of seasonal inuenza (u) vaccine are now available on private

    prescription from community pharmacies for people not eligible for free u

    vaccine. While it is important that everyone consider protecting themselves

    against the u, it is especially recommended for people who are most at risk of

    catching the u virus and passing it onto the more vulnerable members of our

    community. This includes health care workers, child care workers and those who

    have contact with young children, including parents.

    The 2010 seasonal u vaccine provides protection against three strains ofu, the

    pandemic H1N1 strain (swine u), an H3N2 and a B strain.

    The following people are eligible for free u seasonal vaccine

    Everyone aged 65 years and over

    Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 15 years and over

    Pregnant women, and

    Anyone with an underlying medical condition making them more likely tobecome very ill with the u, or suer severe complications.

    immunisation clinic. To make an appointment at a clinic phone the Community
