SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

Matthew 20:1-16

‘I was there first’. Envy easily comes to the surface when faced with the good fortune of others, especially when compared to what seems less favourable treatment of our-selves. Can you recall that feeling in yourself and what it did to you? Can you also recall times when you were content with your lot, even though it seemed others had greater gifts, better opportunities, etc.

A parent or teacher who gives a lot of time to a difficult child does not love the others less, but if we are one of those other children we may not see that. Recall a ‘Jesus per-son’ in your life who helped you to overcome feelings of envy and helped you appreci-ate that the apparently more favourable treatment of another did not mean a lessening of love for you.

This leads us to the core message of this parable, namely, that God’s love is a free gift and not earned. Recall moments when you were particularly conscious of the gifts that God has given you by counting all the blessings that you have, no matter how small.

‘It is too late now’ are words sometimes uttered to justify doing nothing about a situa-tion. This parable tells us that where love is involved, it is never too late. Can you recall times when you got a positive response after taking action when you thought it was ‘too late’?

World Meeting of Families Conference: “When we talk to parents whose children are preparing for sacraments we always tell them that their family home is one of the holiest places their child can be. Does that sound a bit mad? I don’t know about your family home but ours wouldn’t strike anyone as your typical idea of a holy place! There are piles of clothes to be ironed, dishes to be dried, muddy sports gear to be cleaned, a dog who seems to lose more hair every day that she has on her body and a fridge that mysteriously empties as soon as I do the shopping! So how can this be a holy place? Family life is the place where we meet God in the bits and pieces of everyday. We meet him in the daily challenges to love, forgive, nurture and grow together. In the middle of school runs, meals cooked, stories read, homework checked, cuddles given and dreams nurtured. We glimpse the face of God who created us and calls us to the fullness of life. …In all those ways we show love for each other in fam-ily life – even when it is a struggle to do so – become ways of echoing God’s love in the world.”

Lourdes Pilgrimage: Any youths interested in going to Lourdes in June 2018 should make contact with your Sacristan please as places will be booked in Nov and are limited.
