Now in its 8th edition in the UAE, Earth Hour is a combined effort where residents of all our communities come together as one to make a positive difference to the environment.

To complement their commitment, all non-essential lighting is switched off across our communities and engaging events are conducted. This is to encourage residents to experience this global event with their neighbours, reinforce environment-friendly practices and instil a sense of collective responsibility.

So, come join us as we go dark for an hour on 28 March this year.

Lights off for Earth Hour

Being a good neighbour is about respecting fellow residents and avoiding doing anything that might be upsetting. In fact, most conflicts start because of misunderstandings or inconsiderate behaviour.

Here are some of the most common issues which result in neighbour fallout. If you can avoid these, you can ensure a good relationship with the people who live near you.

• Parking in other residents’ parking bays or parking across the line• Turning up the volume too high• Letting your dog howl all day• Screaming, misbehaving or badly behaving children • Swearing in or outside your house• Deliberately ignoring your neighbours can be seen as a gesture of dislike• Slamming your door when entering or exiting your apartment

You should always be considerate if you want to gain respect and build good relationships. Consider the following:• Smile and say hi – Something as simple as this can break the ice and get you talking• Keep them informed – If you’re having a party, let neighbours know a couple of days in advance• Offer support – If your neighbour is going away, offer to keep a watch on their house• Respect them – Always show each respect in all you do

How to be a better neighbour

More gym gearFitness enthusiasts can now benefit from even more equipment that is being purchased for the community gym. Last year, new exercise mats and exercise balls were added to complement the new equipment. This year, kettlebells, medicine balls and a BOSU ball are being purchased. All the more reason for you to focus on getting fit!

Finding your way from point A to point B in Dubai just got a whole lot easier with the introduction of Makani, the official geo-addressing system. Meaning “my location” in Arabic, the 10 digit number provides an accurate location to all buildings and villas in Dubai.

The new system will be used by all government organisations, police, ambulance services, corporate organisations, residents and tourists. Accurate to one square metre, Makani is available on all smartphones, tablets and GPS devices.

Here’s how you can use it:

• Visit makani.ae or download the “Makani Dubai” application from GooglePlay (Android store) or the AppStore (iPhones)• Enter the Makani number in the search field of the page or in the app to find the location/route to your location

Makani will then show you the shortest possible route to your destination.

Your community is a beautiful place to live in. And extra measures are taken to make sure it stays that way. But one thing that is difficult to control is the litter of cigarette butts in our common areas. Our service providers work hard to clean up the place but preventing litter is something they cannot do. The battle against this dirty practice can only be won if smokers join the fight.

Besides being an eyesore, cigarettes are also one of the most insidious forms of litter. Each discarded butt takes 12 years to break down, all the while leaching toxic elements such as cadmium, lead and arsenic into soil and waterways.

Potential fire hazard

You probably already know smoking is bad for your health and the health of those around you, but did you know that it can endanger you and your loved ones in another way – through fire! When you discard a burning cigarette, loose embers that are hot can ignite when they come in contact with a flammable surface. In fact, we have received numerous complaints about cigarette butts being thrown by residents from balconies and windows. Cigarette butts that are still burning can damage clothes, property and also pollute the area.

Let’s join together to make our communities a better place for all of us to live in.
