Rosh Hashana &G-d’s Suffering

Why do we keep asking for thingsfrom God? Maybe there is anotherside to Rosh Hashanah. Maybe weshould ask God what He needs.

For decades here in America, we have been operating bya set of assumptions. Among these assumptions:

1. If you work hard on your job and, show loyalty toyour employer, your work will be rewarded. And

2. If you go to school and achieve a degree, you will geta higher level job and will have greatly increased earningpotential.

Our parents and counselors at school shared the prom-ises of our society with us. Go to school. Learn a pro-fession. You will be rewarded. These were the “rules”on which we were raised. We accepted them.We lived by them. For a couple of gen-erations, these rules seemed to applyin America. Those with a collegedegree earned 1½ millionmore dollars on averagethan their high school gradcounterparts. Those whocompleted a professionearned even more. Wewent to college. We gotour degrees. We werelicensed. And for themost part, we haveearned appropriate in-comes.

That was then. These aredifferent times.

My daughter recently com-pleted her doctoral degree in psy-chology. Of about 120 doctoralgraduates in psy-chology, I have seenonly about 12 jobpostings for entry-level doctoral psychologists. For the first time ever, theLos Angeles County Department of Mental Health hadno positions for entry-level psychologist positions. Theyhad initially posted two entry-level positions, but, just asthere are few entry-level positions, there are few more ad-vanced positions. Two more senior psychologists whocould not get jobs at their level took the more junior jobs.My daughter was privileged to be offered one of the 12available positions, but the joy is limited as her colleaguesand fellow students go without.

The Los Angeles County Psychological Association hasa “listserv” where psychologists and students list job or

office availability, share research, and otherwise post in-formation that may of interest to others in the field. Sincethe May and June graduations from the various psychol-ogy schools, a frequent posting is “Willing to Work forFree” as new graduates want to do the one year of post-doctoral experience which is required for licensed. Spend$200,000 on a graduate education, work hard and gradu-ate, then work for free.

I share what is going on in psychology as that is what Iknow best. The same is true for other professions. Iknow of two very talented law school graduates who had

to take part-time jobs as they could not findappropriate full-time positions. I have

heard of professionals who areworking at Starbucks. They en-

rolled in college, worked hard, acquired their degrees…

and they now work atStarbucks.

The “deal” is off. Thepromises made to ournow adult children arenot being fulfilled.

These are difficulttimes. New grads can’t

get jobs. Long-time em-ployees are laid off. Many

are asked to work reducedhours.

This is not only a recession. Thisperiod seems like a game changer.

The rules have changed. They don’t seemto apply anymore.

Instead of thegraduates rejoicing

over their new job, graduates are moving back home withtheir parents. Plans are put off. Students now have tobegin repayment of college loans, even before they getany income. This creates great pressure.

This year has appeared worse financially than the yearbefore. What is in store as we face the coming year?

What can we do as individuals? Many of us have clientswho can no longer pay their obligations. More of us aretaking more and more cases on a sliding fee schedule. Oc-casionally, a Rabbi or some other leader in the communitywill call and ask that I see a family who is in desperateneed pro bono. More work, less pay.

Law firms have a reduction in income. Retail stores havedeclining business. Many businesses have gone bankrupt.Stores along Ventura Boulevard have “for rent” signs. Thisis not just a recession.

So what can we do as we face Rosh Hashanah and theNew Year?

This is where I might, as I have done in previous articles, ask you to open up your homes and your Sukkot on theholidays to those in need. I would ask you to shop at storeswith declining sales. I would encourage you to take morepro bono cases and to forgive bills owed to you.

But I would like to suggest something different, some-thing additional.

Our synagogues and Jewish agencies are hurting. Foodbanks are serving more than ever. Our Rabbis are givingfamilies money for a place to stay. The charitable needs ofthe community are draining the funds of our communityinstitutions.

On top of the money being handed out, donations tomany institutions have declined as the economy has wors-ened. Synagogues that “sell” High Holiday seats are find-ing fewer people who can pay the full asking price. Shulssold fewer seats last year than the year before. This year, they are likely to sell fewer tickets. Where donations aregiven by those called to the Torah, individuals are likely togive less than last year. The need of our synagogues is somuch greater, yet the outlook for contributions is so muchworse.

We need to contact our Rabbis and ask how we may help. When called upon, give the most you can. Help in what-ever way you can when asked. If a home is needed to helpprovide a holiday meal for a family, volunteer. Be available.Be as generous as you can.

If we work together and help each other, we will survivethis economic downturn which hopefully will soon end.As times improve, we will remain as a united community, our community institutions intact and our familiesstrengthened.

Our Rabbis and community leaders do great work yearafter year. They need us in particular this year. Do what-ever you can.

Have a Good and Sweet New Year!

The Torah, this week's portion tells us, is not in space.“We do not have to travel to the heavens, nor cross the seas to learnit. It is close to our hearts and our lips to do and observe”(Deuteronomy 30:12). Though the Torah is not in theheavens, that is not always the case with the Jews! We readthis week that sometimes the Jewish people will be so dis-persed that "if your exiles are scattered at the end of the skies,Hashem will gather them from there" (Deuteronomy 30:4).

Those two verses are an amazing contrast. Though thePeople of the Book may be as far-flung as the heavensthemselves, the Book is always within our reach. Ulti-mately however, both the far-flung Jew and the Book heor she is meant to observewill always land together.

The meaning of the mes-sage is surely open to analy-sis. What does the Torahmean by telling us that Torah is not in heaven? We allknow that. After all, aren't we reading those verses onShabbos, in synagogue, here on earth?

Rashi explains that the Torah means to tell us that if theTorah was actually in heaven we would have to find a wayto retrieve it, bring it back to earth, and study it! Quite aprescient prediction of space-travel! But, I imagine, if apossible cure for cancer or the quest for other scientificdiscoveries prompted a multi-billion dollar space programwith a goal to land on the moon, Mars and our other ce-lestial neighbors, the quest for morality would have pro-pelled us there thousands of years prior!

Perhaps, however, we can use an old Jewish story to seehow the Torah is entreating us in a different vein.

The story is told of Reb Chaikle, a poor tailor fromLodz, who had recurring dreams. Each night his fatherwould appear to him and tell him about a secret fortune. All he had to do was travel to Vienna and visit the royalpalace. Exactly 50 yards from the palace, explained his fa-ther, was an old oak tree. Under that tree, his father toldhim, lies a great treasure. All Reb Chaikle had to do wasdig under the tree, and all his financial problems would besolved.

At first, Reb Chaikel ignored the dreams, but they keptrepeating night after night, and he felt compelled to travelto Vienna and seek his fortune.

He camped out near thepalace and waited for an op-portune moment to beginthe dig to fortune. At mid-night on a moonless night he

stealthily crept up to the tree and began to dig. His shoveldid not get a chance to strike dirt when he felt a roughhand squeeze the back of his neck.

"Jew!" shouted the palace guard. "What on earth are youdoing at twelve midnight, 50 yards from the palace gates, shoveling dirt?"

Reb Chaikel had no choice but to tell the story of thedream and the great fortune that lay beneath the oak treethat he was about to dig up. He even offered to split thebooty, if only the guard would let him go.

"You idiot!" laughed the guard. "Everyone has dreams. In fact, I myself even dreamt that if I would go to the cityof Lodz in Poland, and dig in the basement of some Jew-ish tailor named Chaikel, I, too, would find a fortune! Hah!

Now get lost!"

Legend has it that Reb Chaikel returned to Lodz, and aftera little digging in his own home became a very wealthy man.

Sometimes we look at the Torah's goals as way up in space! We look at the mitzvos as nearly impossible tasks that are asdifficult to achieve and perform as landing on the moon. Weview them as hurdles that are impossible to overcome andnot feasible to attempt. We must travel to distant lands andperform incredulous feats.

The Torah assures us twice that it is within our reach. AJewish soul may be lost in space, but Hashem will find a wayto bring him home. Whether through a chance meeting withan observant Jew stuck in Thailand, or seated next to himor her on an airplane circling Dallas airport, Hashem willfind him. Next, the Torah assures us that its very manual isa lot closer to practical observance than people may imagine. One may think it takes extensive efforts to become some-thing he imagines is way beyond his reach.

This week the Torah teaches us the secret of the Jewishsoul and the Book that was written to guide it. Both of themare within our reach. Neither of the two is forever spacedout. •

I write this as I sit here, feeling so fortu-nate. I find myself literally in the center ofthe Universe. Oh, how I wish I can capturethis moment!

I am sitting here with my children, in theJewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem.

Here, from where G-d began creating theworld.

Here, where our Matriarchs and Patriarchswalked.

Here, where King David lived andcomposed the Book of Psalms.

Here, where the first and second HolyTemples stood and were later destroyed.

Here, where three times a day, Jews aroundthe world face in earnest prayer.

Here, the gateway to Heaven for all of ourprayers.

Here, where we will one day see peace andthe restoration of G-d's Throne...

And here I am, looking after my son whois making cartwheels on the cobblestone.

Here my daughters are giggling as they bal-ance on the large stone steps.

It is 9 pm, yet here I see children enjoyingrefreshing popsicles, riding bikes.

Here I see a little girl pushing a stroller, taking her baby brother for a pre bedtimewalk.

Here I see people talking, laughing, with

incredible energy.

From here, I cannot bring myself toleave.

The air is cool, with a beautiful breeze.

The moon is bright.

The sky is dark.

Here I see the Churbah Shul, somagnificent, with such a bittersweet and richhistory. Destroyed and rebuilt, twice, nowstanding in full glory... Here is an example ofthe immortality of our People.

And here sit men, women, children, Bub-bys and Zaidys.

No one is rushing anywhere. There seemsto be nowhere to go!

An oasis in time.

Just sitting and breathing in the holy air isenough to satisfy both body and soul.

I leave tonight. Back "home". But I literallyfeel pain in my heart just thinking of leavingthis city, my true home.

We hear music! A brand new Torah Scrollis being escorted to a Shul in the old city. Iam uplifted by the melodies, a violin, accor-dion, singing, dancing, as the beloved torahis danced thru the walkways. We all rise andclap and join in the greatest joy that unitesall Jews. Differences melt away in the pres-ence of our Holy Torah, in this Holy City. Aman with a big kippah offers my daughter tochoose from his basket of candies as he

dances by...

I won’t forget this. Neither will my kids.

How to leave?

We cannot...

“If I forget you, Oh Jerusalem, my righthand will be forgotten…” It is here thatKing David wrote and sang these words...And so I will not forget, nor will I leave.

If G-d wishes for us to end up on thatplane tonight, leaving the Holy Land - I willnot allow my spirit to leave. I will stay put!

My body and soul will remain right here, with the holy and ancient stones under myfeet, keeping me grounded as I travel backto Oxnard, California. And, I will not rest.Truly, I will not allow myself to get comfort-able, until I have done my part to see that theentire Oxnard becomes Jerusalem, perme-ated with Jewish life, Jewish pride, and an eraof Redemption.

I will sign off by sharing with you my fa-vorite prophecy of Zachariah, regarding thetimes of the coming of Moshiach (which Iquoted in my Bat Mitzvah speech some yearsago!): “Again will sit elderly men and elderlywomen in the streets of Jerusalem.” Let usjoin together to sit in the streets again, expe-riencing G-d’s presence, with joy and withhealth. Amen!

Shalom!

ROSH HASHANAH & G-D’S SUFFERING

It’s Rosh Hashanah again. TheJewish New Year arrives onWednesday night, September

28th. Jews will mark their calendarnew year with the number 5772 sincecreation. Families will meet at prayerservices and spend time praying toG-d for a blessed year. At least onefamily meal will be had with the cus-tomary apple dipped in honey symbol-izing the hope for a sweet year.

With the holiday spirit comes someserious thinking. Why is there somuch suffering? We continue to bepuzzled and shocked with the needlessshootings and killings at schools, workplaces, and most recently in Is-real. We think, whatever happened toG-d? Why is there no G-dly interven-tion. As a believer in G-d I understandthat there is intervention. True, thereare acts of G-d like fires and earth-quakes for which there is absolutely no

understanding, but man’s contributionto suffering troubles me.

For answers, I look at traditionalJewish writings. In the Talmud,Megillah 29a, there is a statement“Wherever the Jews were exiled, G-d’sDivine Presence, accompanied them. When they will return to the HolyLand, G-d will return with them.”This means that G-d is with His peo-ple. What ever happens to His peopleaffects G-d.

It would be correct to state that ifpeople suffer, then G-d, the DivinePresence, suffers.

Now the question should not be whydo we suffer, but why should G-dhave to suffer? We experience badthings and G-d suffers with us. Why?

In G-d’s master plan for humankindthere are provisions made for man’saccountability. It is like a partnership.

Page 29: Community Links Issue 190

Some things we do while G-d does other things. For ex-ample, G-d creates the world, then man is placed in it andis given the freedom of choice to enhance or destroy it.

Think for a moment, the three basic things we need forexistence are water, air and bread. Of the three, two arefreely provided by G-d. Bread is one of the least expen-sive foods and is readily available. What has humankinddone with the two free gifts? I believe not so good. Wehave poisoned the air and polluted the water. Instead oftaking advantage of the pure water and clear air, we havebeen steadily destroying those vital gifts. What kind ofpartners are we?

How G-d must suffer seeing the abuse.

On Rosh Hashanah Jews and non Jews must rememberthat G-d created man. People trace their lineage to Adam, the first man. The moment Adam opened his eyes he pro-claimed G-d the King of the Universe. Adam acceptedthe responsibilities of caretaker of the Earth for G-d. We,his children, are responsible to care for this Earth. We areto set up courts of justice, prevent cruelty and abusewhich are part of the Noachide Laws, the others beingthe laws of sexual decency, the prohibition of blasphemyand murder.

A story is told of an ancient house of prayer in Europethat possessed an eerie sound. When entering the prayerroom, you would hear a continuous sobbing sound. Thecloser one would walk to the ark, the stronger the sobbingwas heard. The old caretaker, shamus, would tell of astory he had heard from the older shamus relating to thephenomenon dating back hundreds of years:

There lived a saintly man, called a tzadik, who prayedand fasted all his life. The saint was as close to an angelas possible. One night while in deep prayer, he heardG-d’s voice calling to him. “My son, tell me what youneed and I will grant it.”

The saintly man thought and thought. “I have clothingto wear, my health is good and I have a place to pray. Idon’t need money. Nothing dear G-d,” the saintly mananswered.

There was a silence and then a loud sob. Thunderingand lightening filled the air. G-d’s voice thundered out.“Why did you think of yourself, you should have thoughtof me. How I suffer for My people, for mankind, andjustice for the poor and needy. Why did you not think ofmy suffering? Why did you not ask that my sufferingcease?”

The saintly man realized his sin and was too troubled tospeak. From that day on he grew weaker and weaker. Onhis death bed he told his most trusted students his tragicstory. From that day on, when entering the prayer roomyou could hear the sobbing, as if the prayer room was cry-ing for G-d’s suffering at the lost opportunity.

So, this New Year by all means enjoy yourself and family, dip some apple in honey, pray for a good year and mostof all pray for an end of suffering: your suffering, my suf-fering and, most of all, G-d’s suffering. •

The final song of Moshe's life is read this week. Appro-priate as a prelude to Yom Kippur, it talks about the greatpotential that the Jewish nation has within its very essence.Moshe tells us to "Remember the days of yore, understand theyears of generation after generation. Ask your father, and he willrelate it to you, and your elders, and they will tell you" (Deuteron-omy 32:7-8). He reminds us of the glory days, whenHashem asked us to be His chosen people, accepting theyoke of Torah observance. But Moshe does not stopthere. Using our tremendous capacity as a role of respon-sibility, he warns us of the calamitous effect if we wasteor misuse our tal-ents.

Despite the har-rowing foreshad-owing of disaster, however, theverses of misfor-tune contain amessage of hopeas well. Mosheonce again warnsus of Hashem'spotential wrath;yet a blessing lieswithin his curse, defining the veryessence of thephysiological in-destructibility ofthe Jewish nation.

In predictingcalamitous reper-cussions of sin,Moshe speaks forHashem and de-clares, "I shall accu-mulate evils againstthem. My arrows I shall use up against them." What doesthat mean?

Rashi explains the verse according to a Talmudic expla-nation in Tractate Sotah. "My arrows will come to an end,but they themselves will not come to an end."

The question is obvious. Is G-d's quiver limited? Canthe L-rd ever be bereft of ammunition? How is it possiblethat the Heavenly arsenal, equipped with more power than

an atomic armory, will spend its ammunition withoutachieving total annihilation?

Reb Yosef Friedenson, editor of Dos Yiddishe Vort, tells the story of how he and a group of friends were in asmithy shop in the iniquitous labor camp in the town ofStarachowice. The camp was notorious, and though theoverseer of the factory in which they worked, a mannamed Pape, treated them kindly, one mistake meant thata German guard would treat them as saboteurs and shootthem dead.

Assigned to theHerman Goeringworks one ShminiAtzeres, they werenot told whattheir job was forthat day. And so,to fulfill their hol-iday spirit, theybroke out in a tra-ditional song, AinAdir kaHashem,Ain Baruch k'benAmram (There isnone as powerfulas Hashem norblessed as Moshe, the son ofAmram).

Pape wasshocked. Despitethe torture the

humiliation, and theendless poison-tipped arrows of theHolocaust, thesepeople were singing!

"Why are you Jews singing?” he asked incredulously.“Do you have it so good that you can sing?"

The group explained the words of the song to Pape, going through each stanza, including those that read,"there are no wise men like the scholars of the Torah, andthere is no redeemer like Hashem." Pape was astonished."After all the torture that you have been through, do youreally still believe this?” Immediately, one of the youngermembers of the group, not a particularly religious lad, jumped up with an emphatic, “Yes!" And then each mem-ber of the troupe shouted their endorsement as well. "Of

course! Surely! Without doubt!" One by one, each of thosein the work-force-turned-choir exclaimed his unyielding ap-proval.

Pape soon understood that he was dealing with an inde-structible people. He gesticulated wildly with both arms anddeclared, "I don't know how the Führer will ever get rid ofyou!" With that, he walked away and let them continue theirrelentless commitment to their unshakeable, indestructiblefaith.

Noted scientist Isaac Asimov compiled a book of 3,000interesting facts about the universe, history, and science. Init he deals with a longstanding question: "What would hap-pen if an irresistible force met an immovable body?" Asimovexplains that the question is ludicrous. He simply explains aphysical fact. "In a universe where one of the above condi-tions exists, by definition the other cannot exist."

And so the Torah tells us something about the promisethat Hashem made to His people. They are an immovableobject. Hashem's unremitting commitment for his childrenhas declared Judaism impregnable. And so the physical ar-rows He may send to chastise them cannot forever continue. They must eventually expire. As long as we understand theimmovable body of the Rock of our faith, we are assuredthat there no longer exists an irresistible force to budge oureternity. •

Glossing through the pages of Jewish Newspapers thesedays you'll find an extraordinary number of Rosh Hashanaand Succos related ads. More than anything else, thismeans that schools are in full swing, the Yomim Tovimare upon us and the summer is fading further out of ourpurview.

During the heat of the summer the forecasters were al-ready predicting the oncoming of the chilly weather earlierthan ever, which probably means that you will be wearinglayers in an attempt to keep warm during those night timeseudos in the Succah. So with all the preparations requiredto host family and friends for an extended Rosh Hashanaseason, then again come Succos, and cold weather to boot, you will surely feel the need to getaway. The good news isthat your vacation has been mapped out in its entirety andit is assured to be the most rewarding vacation of your lifethanks to the folks at Kosherica.

The Kosherica team is looking forward to their greatestwinter cruise season ever. Having spoken to family friendswho went with my recommendation to travel withKosherica for the first time to Alaska this summer, I un-derstand that outdoing such a getaway would be quite adaunting challenge, but Kosherica has set a standard foroutdoing themselves with each passing travel season, sothere is no better time to finally experience a vacation theway it was meant to be - you certainly owe it to yourselves.

For almost two decades, the Kosherica family has beenpartnering with the worlds leading cruise-liners in provid-ing the Jewish traveler with the opportunity to travel theworld in five-star luxury, unparalleled kosher entertain-ment, dynamic and thought provoking scholars in resi-dence and delectable kosher cuisine second to none. I liketo call it therapy for the body and the soul. It is truly themost wholesome experience available.

This winter, whether you are looking to travel alone orwith family, Kosherica is the most logical, convenient andrewarding option to travel with and the options are end-less. Kicking off the winter cruise season is a Dec. 25thCruise which embarks from NYC to the Bahamas makingstops at the beaches in Orlando, the private Island ofGreat Stirrup Cay and then on to Nassau before headingback to NYC. Given ten hours in Orlando and Nassau, aswell as seven hours to tour Great Stirrup Cay, is plenty oftime to bask in its beauty and see its historic sites beforeheading back to the Cruise ship and back towards the City.Oh, and if you are worried about missing the snow in NY

you could contact friends and family from the sun-filled,sandy beaches of Orlando and ask them where they wouldrather be.

On January 8th, 2012 Kosherica will lead a cruise toAsia. This a fourteen night cruise will explore the fasci-nating sites of Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and China.China visas will be required for travelers interested in em-barking on this particular cruise. This cruise has been untilnow uncharted territory as far as cruises are concerned, but it is indicative of Kosherica's innovation and ingenuityand it is what sets them apart from the rest of them.

January 22, 2012 marks Kosherica's annual JewishMusic Festival at sea. If you are a fan of Jewish Musicthen there is nothing more you could ask for. This mid-winter cruise to the Caribbean features the Jewish worldsmost talented voices including Avraham Fried, CantorYitzchak Meir Helfgot, World Renowned Israeli Broadwaysensation Dudu Fisher and more. What is more uniquethan the concerts and the heartrending cantorial Shabbostefillos is the opportunity to spend a week with the enter-tainers on a more up-close and personal level, an oppor-tunity only made available on a Kosherica cruise.

If you were thinking of taking the kids along on mid-winter break this January 22nd, cruise to the Caribbeanaboard Royal Caribbean’s, Allure of The Seas, the world’slargest and most exciting cruise ship to date. This willprobably keep the kids as well as yourselves occupied tothe point that you may have to fight with them to join youfor the meals or for an excursion or two. The Allure ofthe seas boasts an impressive 28 ultra modern loft suites,2700 rooms and 16 decks. It is the only Cruise-liner hometo the Dreamwork's experience featuring the very charac-ters from Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda and Howto Train Your Dragon. Travelers aboard this ship will havethe opportunity to pose for pictures and interact with thecharacters during meals and watch their respective threedimensional movies in a designated onboard theatre.

Kosherica spends endless attention to each nuance inits travel itinerary with the traveller in mind. Every newdestination, scholar in residence and entertainer are leadersin their respective areas of expertise.

It's quite hard to fathom but all that is in addition to theintricately detailed schedule prepared by the experts at theKosherica Family. From one season to the next theKosherica cruises have been known to sell out quickly, sopick up your phone and dial 305-695-2700, 877-724-5567or log onto www.kosherica.com and secure your mid-win-ter plans, you will thank me that you did but most impor-tantly of all you will thank yourselves. “Abba, What happened?

“We always had enough, more than enough. Abba gave us everything we needed, and more! I know we were blessed, and I felt good when I got to go with him when he gave money to Tomchei Shabbos. They told me that my Abba was helping other families to have what they needed, also.

“Last year, something bad happened. And it happened all over the world. Lots of people don’t have jobs to go to anymore. One day it happened to my father too.

“Now it’s a different feeling when I go with my Abba to Tomchei Shabbos. Now we go to get help for our family. It’s hard, but I am so glad that Tomchei Shabbos is there to help us, too.”

Your donation is the only thing that can save a struggling family ravaged by economic ruin. We plead with you to be extra generous.

What is Livescan Fingerprinting?Livescan is an inkless fingerprinting process where

fingerprints are electronically transmitted to the Department of Justice for background screening. Ink fingerprinting is still required in many states. However, as a result of legislation passed in 1997, the California Department of Justice (CA-DOJ)

has developed the automated background check process, which requires Livescan fingerprints for criminal history

background checks that may be required as a condition ofemployment. Livescan technology replaces the ink processof recording fingerprint images. The CA-DOJ may also for-

ward Livescan fingerprints to the FBI if required.

Who Needs Livescan?Livescan may be required as a condition of employment

for: Teachers, Care Givers, Contractors, Security Guards,Nurses, Doctors, Surgeons, Real Estate Licensees,

Appraisers, Notaries, DMV Licensed Professionals, Foster Parents, Stock Brokers, Volunteers, and anyone
