FORT JACKSON WORSHIP SCHEDULE
By NICK SPINELLIMEDDAC Public Affairs
A ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. March 21 to mark the long awaited opening of Fort Jackson’s Army Wellness Center that recently began accepting appointments.
The ceremony will be followed by tours of the building and demonstrations of the vari-ous services to be provided there.
“This state of the art facility will provide //-listic health services,” said Col. Eric Edwards, MEDDAC commander.
" / ^
those holistic health services begin with a Health Assessment Review and Body Com-position Analysis.
“The Health Assessment Review is the foundation of the AWC Core Program mix and includes a series of assessments and ques-tionnaires to determine the current level of an individual’s health,” said Seann Hightower, Fort Jackson AWC director. “It will identify the changes that will be necessary to reduce risk factors for disease prevention that in-cludes a body fat assessment which provides a
baseline and assists with estimating a healthy body weight. It also acts as a great motivator for clients to track progress when compared to body weight measurements alone.”
Other services the AWC will provide in-clude metabolic assessments (tests that mea-sure how many calories an individual needs or /
-ment, and tobacco education/cessation.
“The main goal is to increase clients’ posi-tive health behaviors through education,” Hightower said. “Education topics include healthy lifestyles, increased resiliency, pre-venting chronic disease through healthy liv-ing habits and self-care. Healthy lifestyle en-compasses more than diet and exercise- it also includes tobacco habits, alcohol consumption, safety, sleep habits.”

Flashing lights and loud sirens announced the arrival of the Reading Prize Patrol as the caravan of community police, educators and volunteers weaved its way through the hous-ing area, March 8.
The annual Reading Prize Patrol for C.C. Pinckney and Pierce Terrace Elementary schools took place March 8, on Fort Jackson. Each year the schools hold a reading prize pa-trol in the spring and a math prize patrol in the fall to recognize the hard work students are putting in each year.
Dr. Kerrie Ammons, the Speech and Lan-guage Pathologist for C.C. Pinckney saw high numbers of people turn out of the event due to ;/[%
the elementary schools. “Nineteen children were awarded reading
baskets that contained books, book lights, bookmarks, literacy games and much more,” Ammons said, “Families were surprised and grateful for a visit from the Reading Prize Pa-trol.”

Pierce Terrace Elementary, was also pleased with the success of Thursday night’s prize pa-trol.
“It was great to have both schools cel-/ /`
Prize Patrol event,” she said. “We truly see prize patrol events as a Fort Jackson school specialty and we look forward to next year.”
Funding for the educational materials and goodies placed in the reading prize patrol bas-kets was provided via a grant awarded to C.C.
Pinckney PTO President Maureen Voorhees, from the Fort Jackson Thrift Store.
The prize patrols were developed and implemented by Ammons, a member of the Continuous School Improvement Team and the Pickney Stakeholder Team, said she was looking for ways to engage and interact with Fort Jackson Families in a way that focused on the importance of education when the idea of the Math and Reading Prize Patrol came about.
“I guess you could say I was in the right place at the right time and was able to devel-op the concept of ‘prize patrols’ as a way to marry school, home and education,” she said.
The prize patrol would not be possible without willing families who send back forms and teachers who make visits after school hours, she added.

Staff Sgt. Marcus Robinson, a newly-mint-ed drill sergeant from Fort Lee, Virginia, said he is looking forward to sending better trained Soldiers to the operational forces.
“We will to build on the training they re-ceived in BCT and continue to Soldier them so that they will go to (Forces Command) more prepared than what they were,” he said.

Pierce Terrace School students celebrated ‘Hat Day’ March 5 as part of this year’s Read Across America events. The Fort Jackson Association of Educators was
awarded a $3,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to help fund Read Across America activities in 2018. Among this year’s activities were visits from two authors, as well as a student writing pre-
sentation called Author’s Tea, right, which invited parents to installation schools to
hear children share pieces of their writing at C.C. Pinckney Elementary School.

intensive, he said, and the power to do that resides is in the tower, not the cellphone.
SINCGARS radios, on the other hand, use a very large battery for power and have internal routers. Those add weight and bulk.
Also, encryption in a smartphone is relatively simple, com-pared to high-level encryption used in SINCGARS radios, he said. “The difference is in the order of magnitudes.”
There’s an algorithm approval process that has to be validated by the National Security Agency, he added, explaining that en-cryption is accomplished through algorithms that are uploaded into the software.
However, “algorithms have a shelf life,” he said. As adversary hacking ability improves, new algorithms need to be continually written and then approved by the National Security Agency prior to upload. That process of NSA review can be lengthy, in some cases taking weeks or even months.
In addition, for an added layer of security, military radios use something called “frequency hopping,” he said, explaining that radio frequencies are changed many times per second to avoid adversaries from eavesdropping by honing in on a single fre-quency.
So it’s not surprising that the hurdles to overcome are enor-mous, Perkins concluded.
 \ O= % % % % \
said there’s about 62 C2 networks in the Army, each with its own hardware, software, security and people running it.
These stove-piped systems have trouble communicating with each other, he said. What’s really needed, he said, is a single net-work.
Crawford said ideally, a network should be able to detect other networks in the local environment, detect any attempts at jamming or interference, and then take evasive action like au-
tonomously selecting the optimal radio frequency for jamming avoidance.
Ostrowski said the Army is using a multifaceted approach aimed at getting to the network problems.
One idea, he said, is to tap into the power of having many small, low-orbit satellites that could be linked to the radios that would provide communications seamlessly at any time or place in the world.
Another idea is to improve how the radio operates, he said, noting that there are only around 5,000 companies in the U.S. doing business with the Defense Department. There are another 23 million companies in the U.S. that are not. “We’re not tapping into that yet.”
There’s a lot of innovation out there in industry, he said. “Who $$
