ITT sponsors StockholmJunior Water PrizeStudents Wang Hao, Weng Jie and Xiao Yi from
Shanghai, China are the winners of the 2006
Stockholm Junior Water Prize, sponsored globally
by ITT Corporation. Wang, Weng and Xiao,
students at Shanghai Nanyang Model High
School, received the Prize from HRH Crown
Princess Victoria on behalf of the Stockholm
International Water Institute (SIWI) for a research
project that aims to ecologically restore urban
Chinese river channels. The group of students
received a USD 5,000 scholarship and a crystal
sculpture.
The International Stockholm Junior Water Prize,
awarded during World Water Week 2006 in
Stockholm, encourages young people globally to
take note of issues related to water and the
environment. Each year a high-school age student
or group of students receives the international
award after receiving the top national award in
their home country. "The impending water crisis is
one that affects all nations, developed or
undeveloped. Solutions to water issues must be
researched further so that every country has
access to safe, clean water," said Steve Loranger,
President and Chief Executive Officer of ITT
Corporation. "The International Stockholm Junior
Water Prize provides a forum for our future
environmental leaders to make strides in
improving water quality on both local and national
levels, and it encourages the world's youth to take
action and research global water solutions today."

Pump Users International Forum& Technical Exhibition in 2008P ump Engineer and the Pumps and Systems Association of VDMA
are pleased to announce that they have joined forces to further
develop the Pump Users International Forum into an eminently
respectable international platform. The VDMA Pumps + Systems
Association as the promoter of this forum will be responsible for the
overall content and organisation. Pump Engineer will act as the
official international media partner for the upcoming 9th Pump Users
International Forum, which is scheduled in Germany end of
September/beginning of October 2008 (exact dates and venue to be
announced later).
Since its inception in 1973 the Pump Users International Forum has
grown into a well-established and internationally recognized two-day
conference and technical exhibition attracting typically 750 visitors
and 65 exhibitors. The purpose of joining forces is to combine
VDMA's international network within the pump industry together with
Pump Engineer's comprehensive international network within the
manufacturing and user industries with the clear goal to attract even
more delegates and visitors from the international pump community.
Because of this cooperation and in order to avoid conflicting
interests, the planned Pump Engineer Conference & Expo has been
cancelled and will be integrated into the Pump Users International
Forum 2008.

Webvertising:breaking new groundsHerb Broadway is KCI Publishing's e-marketing
coordinator and, as such, is responsible for the
wide range of electronic advertising possibilities
Pump Engineer offers. Together with clients, he
finds the webvertising opportunities that best fit
their communication needs. Mr. Broadway: “I like
it best when a company contacts me and says
they have a certain budget available and what can
they do with it. Together, we can then compile a
tailor-made package that caters to their specific
needs. Companies are often surprised when they
see our wide range of webvertising options but
the younger “webwise” generation in particular
fully acknowledges the potential of this relatively
new form of advertising.”
Pump Engineer's range of electronic advertising
opportunities includes web boxes, logo banners,
hyperlinks and a highlights section on the Pump
Engineer home page but Broadway is particularly
excited about the Cyber Guide, which can be
found on the Pump Engineer website,
www.pumpengineer.net: “The Cyber Guide is a
new and easy to use online database of pumps
and related products. With the help of this
product locator, users can select by product
category, region or country and the Cyber Guide
will generate links to companies that meet their
criteria, and provide contact details for these
companies. It is an extremely useful tool to bring
together supply and demand.”
Companies that are interested in having their
product details added to the Cyber Guide or in
other webvertising possibilities can contact Herb
Broadway at +31 575 585 278, h.broadway@kci-

Writing for Pump Engineer magazineYou too can earn recognition by writing for
Pump Engineer magazine. You certainly don't
have to be a professional writer to have an article
published. You need only present some
information, based on experience or know-how,
that will be of value to our readers. David Sear,
editor for Pump Engineer magazine, explains how
to prepare and submit your material for
consideration by the editors. “Our readership is
interested in technical solutions to problems,
industry trends, strategies and regulatory
compliances. Preference is therefore given to
papers written or co-written by operating
companies describing commercially viable new
technologies and/or case histories of applications
which have been successful, backed by data. Sales
pitches promoting certain products or services will
not be accepted.”
• Text: We are flexible about the length of the text,
but articles typically run about three to four
printed pages and contain about one-third
illustrations and two-thirds text. This matches
with 1500-2000 words. Please submit your article
by e-mail. However, if the text contains
mathematical formulae or other non-standard
characters then please also forward a hard copy.
• Illustrations: Your use of appropriate, carefully
planned illustrative material can make a big
difference in the usefulness and attractiveness of
your article. Please submit your illustrations as
separate .jpg files, not embedded in the text of
the article, with a minimum resolution of 300dpi.
Be sure to include a caption for each illustration.
• By-line and biography: Indicate how you would
like your name and affiliation to appear. We also
need a short biography detailing your present
position and/or title. In addition, please send a
sharp photograph of yourself.
• Copyrights: The publisher, KCI Publishing B.V.,
has the copyright of all articles printed in Pump
Engineer.
• Deadlines: Please try to meet the deadline given
by the editor. This way, there will be more time
for a proper lay-out, which will benefit the
exposure of the article. Exceeding a deadline
may also mean that we will have no choice but to
cancel your article altogether.
If you have any questions or would like to submit
an article, please contact David Sear at
+31 575 585 284, [email protected].

Focus on Nuclear Power GenerationIn 2003, KCI Publishing, publishing house of
Stainless Steel World, Valve World and Pump
Engineer, decided it was time to expand into the
nuclear power generation market. We felt there
was something “in the air,” and we wanted to be
there and report on it. Not everyone was
convinced that we were doing the right thing.
Nuclear power was a thing of the past many
said….
Fast forward to 2006 and what a different world
we live in today! After issuing a request for
editorial contributions for this issue, articles and
papers have been pouring in steadily, leaving us
with a nice selection to choose from. The result is
a magazine that, we hope, once again is of
significant interest to materials and flow control
professionals involved in nuclear power
generation worldwide.
It seems we were right in 2003 when we decided
to move into the nuclear field, so much in fact
that we have decided to “up” production.
Beginning in 2007, we will expand to two issues
of Focus on Nuclear Power Generation per year,
with the next issue scheduled for publication in
April.
To advertise in any of the upcoming issues,
please contact Mrs. Ladan Pourtork at +31 575
585 292, [email protected]. If you would
like to submit an editorial contribution or a press
release, please contact the editor, Mrs. Esther
Aiking-Martensen at +31 575 585 276,
By 2010, three sewage treatment plants, made
almost entirely of stainless steel, will help to
restore Halifax harbour in Nova Scotia, Canada to
its original purity. The USD 333 million Halifax
Harbour Solutions Project will improve water
quality dramatically while transforming a murky,
foul-smelling waterway into what James Campbell,
spokesperson for the project, calls “the jewel of the
city.” At the heart of the project are three treatment
plants being built by Degrémont Halifax, a division
of Paris-based global water treatment giant
Degrémont Suez. The material of choice for a great
many of the pipes, pumps, screens, conveyors and
other components of the treatment plants is nickel-
containing stainless steel. Practically all the
stainless used in the plants will be S304, except for
the last stages of the treatment process, when
more corrosion-resistant S316 is needed.
Degrémont is building the treatment plants in
partnership with Dexter Construction Co. Ltd.
Dexter also has the USD 112 million contract to lay
20,000m of new sewer pipe to feed the plants. The
Halifax Harbour restoration
Halifax plant will be in operation by spring 2007.
The Dartmouth plant, on the opposite side of the
harbour, will come on-stream in August of that year
and be joined by the smaller Herring Cove plant,
near the harbour's mouth, in mid-2008. Tidal action
will ensure a dramatic and almost immediate
improvement in water quality.

In the fall of 2006, Pump Engineer and KCI
Publishing established a presence in Shanghai,
China, through the Shanghai Ke Sheng Business
Consulting Company. Staffed by native-speakers of
Chinese and managed by Sylvia Vollebregt, we
hope to be able to further improve and expand the
services we can offer to our Asian clients this way.
Mrs. Vollebregt explains: “Because of the rapid
economic development in China and Asia, and
because KCI Publishing has experienced an
increasing share of turnover in Asia, the company
felt it had to be closer to this market. Through our
presence in Shanghai, we can cover the growing
Chinese client base effectively and efficiently. In the
near future we hope to expand these services and
offer them to clients in other areas of Asia as well.”

Sulzer wins Pearl GTL contract
Sulzer Chemtech has been selected by Qatar Shell
GTL Limited to design and supply column internals
and other key equipment for the Pearl Gas to
Liquids (GTL) plant in Ras Laffan Industrial City,
Qatar. The Pearl GTL project comprises the
development of upstream gas production facilities
and an onshore GTL plant that will produce
140,000 barrels per day of GTL products, including
naphtha, GTL fuel, normal paraffins, kerosene,
and lubricant base oils. In addition, the plant will
also produce approximately 120,000 barrels per
day of condensate, liquefied petroleum gas, and
ethane. When completed, it will be the world's
largest integrated GTL complex. GTL is
complementary to liquefied natural gas and
pipelines and helps countries to diversify their
energy supplies. GTL products are clean and
odorless, contain virtually no sulfur, nitrogen, and
aromatics, and result in higher air quality for
cities.

That Kodak Moment!
In this section, we usually publish atypical pump-related photos or photos of Pump Engineer magazine
spotted in unusual locations. However, this time, we wanted to share with you a snapshot taken by one of
our editors one autumn evening as we were all about to head home after a busy day. It shows the town of
Zutphen, The Netherlands, where our main office is based, at sunset, as seen from the editorial office.
With views like these, isn't it a miracle that we get any work done at all?
Cover story concept:Powerful promotionPump Engineer is a multi-channel resource aimed
at the needs of pump users worldwide. Essential
information about pumps and pump applications
is brought to the market through a magazine, a
website, face-to-face events and research and
intelligence activities. All of these four channels
have one thing in common: They focus on the end-
users of pumping equipment.
That is why taking a cover story in Pump Engineer
is an excellent way for suppliers of pumps and
related equipment to communicate with these
end-users. The cover story concept is a unique mix
of an editorial feature and an advertising
campaign with enormous selling power, consisting
of the following elements:
• a four-page, full-color, article, written in our
style by one of the editors of Pump Engineer
magazine, approved by your company
• a magazine cover with a photo of your company
and the title of the cover story, containing your
company name
• an advertisement campaign in consecutive
issues of Pump Engineer magazine, consisting of
at least six full-page, full-color advertisements,
one of these in the issue containing your cover
story
• up to 500 copies of the issue featuring your
cover story for your own distribution among
clients, prospects, at trade shows etc. All copies
will be sent to one European address free of
charge. Extra copies or other addresses can be
arranged at a surcharge.
• your cover story and the magazine cover in the
cover story gallery of the Pump Engineer website

• a pdf version for use on your company website
