In September 2011, Arlington County and The George Washington University entered into a 20-year agreement under which GW designed and constructed new baseball facilities at Barcroft Park Field #6.

1

Background The agreement for Barcroft #6 improvements required that GW

spend no less than $3,000,000 on field upgrades and improvements to help create more of a “ballpark” atmosphere. GW’s investment in the initial improvements exceeded

$5,000,000

Since the completion of the improvements, GW’s NCAA Division I Men’s Baseball team and several Arlington County diamond field user groups have utilized and benefitted from the upgrades made at Barcroft Park Field #6.

2

Background Barcroft Park Field

#6 is located on South Four Mile Run Drive at the western end of Barcroft Park.

Field #6 is one of four 90-ft baseball diamonds in Arlington County, and is currently the only synthetic diamond field in the county.

The diamond field located at Gunston is currently in the design phase, and will be synthetic turf in the near future.

Planning for the Future

In addition to the initial facility improvements made by GW, the existing agreement outlined that “the design should allow for the addition of team locker rooms and a club house in the future.”

GW first approached the County in 2015 to outline their goals for construction of a clubhouse facility.

5

Funding For the past several years, GW has been working to secure funding

from both university and philanthropic sources to support the locker room/clubhouse facility project.

Over this time, it became clear that enclosed, year-round indoor batting tunnels would significantly enhance Barcroft Park.

As a result, with funding now in place, GW desires to move forward to construct a new clubhouse as well as an enclosure for the existing outdoor batting cages at Barcroft Park.

6

Project Scope One-story 6,200 SF clubhouse building located to the east of

the entry gate (opposite the existing restroom building) including locker room, showers, laundry, office and team space, and two indoor batting tunnels

3,240 SF enclosure for existing outdoor batting cages

GW will be responsible for all costs associated with the design and construction of the new clubhouse and batting tunnel enclosure, currently estimated at over $3,000,000

Community BenefitsArlington County non-profit youth diamond field user groups will benefit from use of the new indoor batting tunnels and the enclosure for the existing batting cages.

Groups will schedule up to 275 hours of use in the clubhouse through the Department of Parks and Recreation

Existing cages to be used outside of GW’s games and practices

There are currently no covered batting cages or indoor batting tunnels operated by Parks and Recreation

16

Continued Partnership In addition to funding and constructing the facility

upgrades, GW is also seeking to extend the current twenty-year agreement with Arlington County for an additional ten years.

The continued partnership will ensure that Barcroft Park Field #6 remains an outstanding facility for years to come.
