Message to Our Community

YMCA of Kingston | 2016 CoMMUNItY IMpACt report 2

From the president and Chief executive officer

this has been an exciting year for the YMCA as we launch our strategic plan for the next three years. Since 1855, we have been an important community asset in Kingston, offering important services in fitness and childcare throughout the city and surrounding counties. In the next three years, we’re IN!

We are creating a sustainable plan for our infrastructure through innovation and entrepreneurialism.

We are building an inclusive community with our partners, working together to harness the knowledge and passion of our people to position the YMCA for its next 150 years. We provide services for everyone – young and old, rich and poor, new Canadians and long-time Kingstonians.

We are inspiring support for the YMCA by celebrating and showcasing our partnerships, our strong kids, strong families, and strong community.

Please check out our full strategic plan at:www.kingston.ymca.ca/about/governance

thank you for all your support of the YMCA and we look forward to continuing to be a part of our community.

Mary Kloosterman, Ceo Brent McIntyre, president

1420 members of the YMCA were supported through financial assistance programs.

Purpose

I grew up in the philippines and Scotland. I’ve traveled a lot and moved around with my family. We emigrated to Canada when I was 15. During my time in highschool, I began at the YMCA as a volunteer. I realized I wanted to coach and guide children in physical activity. I went to St. Lawrence College for the Fitness and Health promotion program, and now I’m fully focused on working with children.

one day I saw a child sitting on the side lines not participating. I thought he was just shy but it turned out he didn’t know how to play the game. I started encouraging him and the more I did the more he opened up. that got me thinking that if I can engage him, I could do that with anyone.

the Y has given me the opportunity to do something that I love and now I’m able to pass that along to children in the community.

4954 personal training sessions and fitness orientations were delivered at the YMCA of Kingston in 2016.

Volunteer of the Year Carole Gibson

Giving back

“I love to dance, I love music and I love to get people moving and sweating...IN tIMe to tHe MUSIC! 5,6,7,8”

- Carole Gibson

Carole Gibson grew up in Sault Ste Marie and began taking Jazz, tap, and Ballet lessons at the age of six. tap is Carole’s first love and she still takes adult tap classes. Her tap shoes are always ready for her in the car.

At sixteen, Carole earned her teaching certificate in dance allowing her to share her love of dance with part-time jobs and summer jobs through high school and post secondary.

During her time in competitive dance, Carole was travelling to other towns and cities (Sud-bury, North Bay, toronto), and much like sport does, this enhanced her skills by layering in performance, teamwork, and collaboration with a healthy dose of competitiveness to fur-ther develop her potential.

Carole had her first connection to the Y while a student at Laurentian University (Sudbury). A friend in residence was a member of the YMCA of Sudbury. He approached Carole to run dance classes for the Gymnastics program teaching the young gymnasts grace and poise through dance. It was a rewarding part-time job during university and a positive introduction to the YMCA’s role and function in the community.

then along came a new fitness craze, Dancercise. In 1992, Carole completed the YWCA Fitness Instructors Course, Dawn Daniels Dancercise program. She started leading regular group fit classes at gyms and clubs in the GtA where she worked as a Human resources Consultant. teaching classes after work was a great way to avoid rush hour traffic, and re-energize herself and others!

After a move to Kingston and having her first child, Carole returned to fitness classes in late 1999 by joining other moms at the Glenburnie United Church, where they offered child care during the class times. Moms could get their sweat on! Carole’s interest in leading group fit classes was reignited when a substitute was needed, so she recertified at the Kingston YMCA under the incomparable instruction of Angela Kimmett. Carole then met Shelley Swift, Supervisor of Adult Health and Fitness at that time, and was encouraged to teach classes at the Kingston Y. She happily signed on as a volunteer five years ago. Carole is being recognized at this year’s AGM for five Years of Service at the YMCA of Kingston.

“that was so much fun,” and “I loved the music,” echo down the hall at the Y after one of Carole’s 5 6 7 Sweat classes. “Music connects with people.” She will use a variety of music genres in her playlists and has been known to have theme classes such as the Beatles, Disco, tunes from every decade dating back to the 30s and 40s, Musicals and more. “Anything goes, except Country!” she laughs. Carole believes that there is a dancer inside each of us. Dance engages not only the body, but also the brain. “participants learn patterns that they have to recall and put in to action, they exercise spatial awareness, they engage on a cognitive level all while having fun and hopefully feeling like it was play.” Carole says, “I want to give people what I have, a love of music and dance...in time to the music!”

When learning she was being celebrated as Volunteer of the Year, her genuine, modest qualities shine.

“I am honoured. It is so true that volunteering has a ripple effect. there is an ongoing and hugely rewarding give and take. I am a small piece of it and grateful that the positive energy created by YMCA members and the highly capable Y staff and volunteers (the edwards, elenas, MJs, Jennys, Leslies, Crystals and Helens) is contagious. “

Back to you Carole (who ends each class with), “thank you for playing along!”

Meet Lev and Christyna,In 2016, Christyna and Lev moved to Kingston from toronto. Christyna, a single parent, was to begin her MBA studies at Queen’s University in January of the following year and knew Lev needed a place he could be comfortable and safe before he started at a new school in the fall. Christyna approached the YMCA of Kingston. Her visit and meeting with Y staff, resulted in the groundwork for their new life in Kingston.

Staff at the YMCA met Christyna and determined that she would be eligible for support through YMCA Financial Assistance programs and Canadian tire Jumpstart Charities. the application process was initiated by a staff member and resulted in membership funding and reduced before and after-school care fees. Not having to worry about extra childcare expenses allows Christyna to focus on the things that matter: Lev and her education.

“everyone knows of the Y, but I had never been a member so had no idea of the scope of services available. Somehow I knew it was the best place to go and I was not wrong. Now I don’t know what I’d do without my partnership with the Y staff and services.” Christyna says.

Studying for her MBA leaves her with little time through the day to interact with Lev. the daunting academic calendar and project work schedule of an MBA means that the time Lev spends at school and at the YMCA is crucial in his daily life; bridging the gap between the challenges of his Grade 1 life and studies and his mother’s intense demands with a condensed post-secondary business curriculum.

one thing that helps Christyna manage their busy lives is a routine. the YMCA supports that routine throughout the week. Lev has friends and feels comfortable during his time at the YMCA. His experience starting in a new home, away from family and friends, would be completely different without the relationships and security he has come to know at the YMCA.

Christyna believes that the people at the YMCA are one of the best parts of Lev’s day-to-day experience. the real-life role models available to Lev give him the guidance and support that he needs to continue to grow with confidence.

Because of donor and partner support, Christyna and Lev can balance a hectic and challenging life together. the YMCA offers a safe and engaging place for Lev to grow and play while Christyna has both the time she needs to study and the facilities available to recharge her batteries; leaving her the energy and time to invest in herself and her family.

“When a complete stranger is willing to support you, it’s amazing because that support could have gone to anyone and the donor is asking for nothing in return. Sometimes you don’t even think you’re worthy of support. I didn’t know where to go or what to do. the generosity of others can often mean the difference between being able to do something and not being able to doing something – and the generosity of this community has been a deal-maker for Lev and me. It’s been inspiring” says Christyna.

Without donor support the YMCA could not deliver the life-changing programs and services that make our community what it is. From childcare to adult wellness, the generosity of donors and partners is what makes the YMCA of Kingston such an important part of Christyna and Lev’s daily life.
