CREDENTIALS EARNED BY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTSIn 2019-20, 189 high school students earned Ivy Tech credentials; nearly double last year’s figure. Most earned their credentials at no cost by taking Ivy Tech dual credit classes at their high schools.

The increase is largely attributed to the work of College Connection Coaches, Ivy Tech employees who work onsite at area high schools to help with college planning. Coaches work with students on their pathway to post-secondary attainment.

The majority of high school students completed the “Start as a Sophomore” program to earn their Statewide Transfer General Education Core (STGEC), a 30-credit hour technical certificate that allows them to start as a sophomore at all Indiana public four-year institutions.

Ivy Tech Terre Haute’s Workforce Alignment team provides short-term training programs to prepare individuals to earn industry-recognized credentials that qualify them for employment. Training programs are designed to meet the evolving needs of the workforce in West Central Indiana. Some programs also “crosswalk” toward Ivy Tech associate degree programs. For example, those who complete the CNC Operator Training will earn four National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS) certifications, preparing them for entry level CNC Operator/Machinist employment. In addition, they will earn 12 college credits that count toward an associate degree in Machine Tool Technology, should they desire to continue their education for additional employment opportunities.

KHADIJAH BUTLER

Khadijah Butler found her way to Ivy Tech after experiencing financial aid difficulties at another institution, forcing her to drop her classes. Khadijah was only 18 at the time, and she said she felt lost until trying a class at Ivy Tech. Khadijah researched careers and realized that she had a talent in helping people and providing a listening ear. She enrolled in Ivy Tech’s Human Services program so she could start a career in counseling or social work. She excelled in her classes and was accepted into the Ivy Tech Terre Haute’s ELEVATE Minority Scholars Achievement Program. Khadijah completed her associate degree in May 2020. This fall, she will begin her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work at the University of Louisville.

Statewide Technical General Education Core

Associate of Applied Science, Machine Tool Technology

Braxton Vincent, Parke Heritage High School graduate, took as many Ivy Tech dual credit classes in high school as possible to get ahead and to save on college costs. Braxton completed the “Start as a Sophomore” program to earn a 30 credit hour technical certificate that transfers to all Indiana public institutions, upon student acceptance.

He could have enrolled at any Indiana four-year institution with automatic Sophomore status, but Braxton enrolled at Ivy Tech Terre Haute for the Fall 2020 Semester to pursue an associate degree and short-term certifications in cyber security. After he graduates from Ivy Tech, he plans to continue his education at Indiana State University to earn a bachelor’s degree before starting a career.

HOLLY ZEHNER

Holly Zehner’s father had a 30+ year career as a tool and die maker, so she grew up with a love for the machining industry. She had a career in the healthcare field doing administrative work, but decided she wanted a change. She researched educational options and chose Ivy Tech because it was the most practical way for her to get hands-on training to start a career quickly. Ivy Tech also offered Holly the flexibility to continue working full-time while she was a student.

Only one year after starting her degree program, Holly earned her Technical Certificate in Machine Tool Technology, which made her eligible for employment in the field. After interviewing at several companies, she chose to work locally at Enjet Aero, where she is still employed, after graduating with her associate degree in May 2020.
