FROM the messy desk of the EDITOR I bet every group of volunteers striving to make their community great, wishes that there were more people willing to bear the load. YDCA wants to bring all those people together; the ones who have volunteered for many years, and the ones who are still volunteering now, for a high

tea. This time we will entertain and nourish you, and thank you, on behalf of our town, for the many hours you have given for our benefit. Reserve the date, Sunday 24 May. Tickets ($15, or $12 for pensioners & children) will be available shortly.

As anticipated, fire restrictions were lifted in mid-March. Now is a great time to burn off those heaps of prunings and other material that accumulated over the summer. Remember to register your burn off with CFA to help the call takers distinguish between burn-offs and genuine emergencies.

The number is 1800 668511. Late last year the Brigade sought new recruits to assist in maintaining day time response capability. We have registered three new fire fighters over recent months, all of who have either finished or are nearly finished their training. This has taken a significant time commitment on the part of these members; however they will soon be ready to respond to emergencies with the rest of the brigade. We appreciate their willingness to undertake the role of fire fighter to assist in protecting our community, and I’m guessing you do too.

The Book Fair weekend (July 11th & 12th) is rapidly

approaching. Thanks to all those in the district

who have donated books for sale. It’s not too late

so if you have any books you would like to pass on

to the brigade, feel free to drop them off at the fire

station on a Monday night or call Michael on 0438 342 679 or Geoff on 0418 318 900.

It’s bonfire time, but care is still needed!

Reflection By Rev Sue Jacka

I remember discussions at high school about the impact of labour saving devices. They were meant to bring us more leisure time, so that people could enjoy their lives, spend precious moments with loved ones, travel to exciting places and relax. People, we assumed, would work fewer hours and still have sufficient money to participate fully in a range of pursuits. However, statistics show this has not been the result. It seems that we humans often choose to use our labour saving devices to raise our standards rather than to free up time. So we wash our clothes more often; we type and carefully decorate computer generated invitations rather than accepting a short handwritten note. This means there is a shrinking portion of discretionary time for many people. Most of us really want to spend more time with friends or family or just enjoying ourselves! However, it seems to me that it is within our power to decide how we make time savings. How important or necessary is this task? Can it wait? Does it need to be done at all? Could I use this time better to be creative or contact a loved one? I believe that we were created as human beings, but so many pressures in life seem to squash us into human doers.

Your MARCH

Garden By Katrina Langmaid,

Katrina’s Garden Plant Nursery, ph: 0427 348 355

What to Plant: Vegie Seedlings – Cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, beans, spinach & silver beet

Seeds – Broad Beans, Chinese Cabbage, Onions

Flower Seedlings –Pansy, Primula, Viola and Snap Dragons

What to do in the garden April and May is the best time to be in your garden and my favourite time of the year, the autumn leaf colours are amazing and give you

continual interest in the garden. The days become mild and mellow - perfect for restoring the garden back to its best and planning for the cooler months ahead. 1. Prepare beds for new roses and deciduous trees by digging in organic compost. 2. May’s the last chance to finish planting spring bulbs. 3. Plant out all winter/spring flower and vegetable seedlings 4. When mowing, leave lawns a little longer than usual and feed lawns with

lawn fertiliser. 5. This is a good time to cut back perennials that have finished flowering, and divide established clumps and Trim evergreen shrubs that need tidying.

Tip of the month: An application of plant food now will

not only give plants a boost after

summer's harsh conditions, but will

help them build up strength to survive

winter's chill.

We had a letter from Pakenham Lions Club seeking anyone who would be able to donate hay fodder to their “Lions Need for Feed” project, to pass onto areas affected by this summer’s bushfires. At least 170 farms were seriously affected.

If you are able to help supply some fodder, or donate money to help cover the transport fuel costs, please contact Graham Cockerell on

0459 444 111. This effort is being sponsored by Alex Scott and Staff.

‘TINA TURNER’ VISITS FASHION PARADE

On March 21st in St Jarlaths Hall, Yarragon Lions staged a great fashion parade, sponsored by Millers Fashions of Morwell. Our thanks go to Nola and Lyn for presenting a great show. The hall looked beautiful thanks to the great flower arrangements made by our President Peter and friend Marg. Everyone pitched in which made it a great team effort. Our very glamorous “boys and girls” were our models. A guest appearance by Tina Turner (Guy Scicluna) had the visitors in stitches. We would like to thank James for an exceptional effort photographing every part of the entertainment beautifully,

We are grateful for the generous support of our local businesses and friends. Our thanks go to Gumboot, Rendevouz, of Yarragon, Tritech, Yarragon Antiques, Yarragon Café, De’Koda, Barb Micken Beauty Therapist, Floriginal, Woolworths, Pennyworth of Lollies, Deb & Brian Cole, Peter & Alsions Petschel, Lyn & Ron Jones, Ingrid & Neil Morris, Vicki & Stan Norton, and Ann Robins, for their very generous donations.

*****

We would like to thank the Ripplebrook family who invited us to cater for their huge clearing sale on March 7th & 8th, and the many customers who supported us. The next day we had a late call to sizzle sausages outside Bunnings. This was all a good training warm-up for our four-day catering stint at the Gippsland Farm World at Lardner Park from the 26th to the 29th.

*****

I would like to thank our long-term Yarragon Lions members Lionel Deaver, Allan Follet, Jim Geary and Rowley Ruck for helping to sort out a box full of photographs covering the activities of the Yarragon Lions Club from 1978 to 2011. We have finally placed them all

into one photo album to keep a record of our Yarragon Lions Club. We have all learnt that it sure pays to put names and dates on the back of our photos as soon as they have been printed!!!

ONE of OUR OWN: Trooper Michael “Mick” Byrne (1891-1915). By Pamela Morrison, Michael’s Niece

There are many reasons to remember our fallen servicemen from the First World War.

In this centenary year of Gallipoli, which gave birth to the legendary and enduring

Anzacs, the following story is to honour family memory and to remember:

Michael was born in Yarragon in 1891, the

son of Anastasia and Pierce Byrne, early

settlers of Sunny Creek, near Trafalgar.

Mick (along with his younger siblings,

Mary, Margaret, Veronica, Pierce, Agnes

and Eileen) grew up on the family farm

“Hawthorn Grove” located on the creek

by what is now the Princes Highway.

After his education at Sunny Creek State

School, Mick worked on the farm and

developed a natural affinity for horses, so

it’s no surprise that he gravitated towards

joining the Light Horse when he

“answered the call of king and country”.

It is possible that his decision also rested

upon escaping a harsh life under a strict

father. An Irishman, Pierce had no

interest in losing his oldest son (and key

worker) to the English army.

Mick enlisted at Trafalgar three months

after the outbreak of war and embarked

for the front on the HMAT Wiltshire in

April 1915.

After a short stay Egypt, he reached the

Dardenelles by May, another

reinforcement to the now horseless 9th

mounted regiment, dug desperately into

the coastal cliffs of Gallipoli. Within three

days he survived a bullet wound to the

head—returning to duty the same day

with what must have been just a close

shave.

Like many of his comrades, Mick suffered

from the gastric maladies of the trenches,

spending a week in the field hospital on

Mudros, a Greek island 50km from

Gallipoli.

He returned to duty and on 27th August

was involved in the major assault of a Turk

position called Hill 60. Half of the 9th Light

Horse became casualties of this costly

affair.

Mick survived the appalling carnage of the

first day of battle, only to be shot in the

head the next day whilst moving about in

his trench. He was not so lucky the

second time: he died of wounds two days

later on the 30th August, aged 24, and was

buried the same day.

In a moving letter to Pierce and Anastasia,

an old friend of Mick’s from Yarragon,

Corporal Albert C. Fisher, later testified to

Mick’s courage under fire (see clipping for

The Trafalgar & Yarragon Times). Despite

his father’s deep misgivings, Anastasia

applied for and

received Mick’s

posthumous war

medals, which were:

the 1914-15 Star, the

British War Medal and

the Victory Medal.

Although Mick’s life

was cut short, he lives

on in the memory of

his family who

remember his self-

sacrifice.

Term Dates:

Term 2 commences on Monday 13th April and will end on Friday 26th June. Term 2 will be an eleven week term.

House Athletics Sports:

Sanders House won the recent House Athletics Sports in a close tussle with Stoneman. Fisher and Simpson filled the other places. It was a day of fun competition for children and the many adults who attended to assist and cheer the children on. The preschool race was the biggest in living history with us having to run two heats to fit them all in. The Yarragon Gift was won by Gaige White and Olivia Ambler.

The Parent Club put on a BBQ and supplied coffee/tea, cold drinks, icy poles etc for the hungry competitors and supporters. Overall it was a great day! Thanks to everyone for making it so successful.

House Cup Winners

Look At My Learning: (LAML)

We had our first LAML for the year recently. This is where we have the children present a portfolio of work and assessments showing what they have learnt over the course of the term. It is much more powerful learning than reading in a report what a child can do. This shows parents what their children can do, what they are strong in and what they need to work on.

ELC:

The groups are settling into life in the ELC well. The enhanced staff team of Lee, Lauren and Ros are doing an excellent job with next year’s primary school children and the 3 year old group too.

The enhanced transitions and working

closely with the school makes that step to school a very positive one. We are very lucky to have this education hub at Yarragon.

Fundraising:

The ELC and Parent Club have worked together on fundraising for the year. Parts of the fundraising will be done together and some in parts. But all funds raised will go to the children. Recent purchases have included enhancing our take home books for children as due to our increasing numbers we need more books. I think we will get over $800 worth of books. Other purchases will include some more shade structures and assistance with camps. The ELC committee is looking to further enhance the grounds and play equipment.

Working Bee:

We are holding a combined ELC/school working bee on Sunday 19th April commencing at 10am. Garden planting, oiling the pirate ship and shifting the cubby are included in the days activities.

Related to this is the fence being built between school and Dowton Park’s Number 1 Oval. Thanks to Craig and Kellie for their hard work in this area.

ANZAC Day:

At the time of writing I have not confirmed our involvement but I expect that our choir will sing at the ANZAC Day ceremony and our student leaders will play a part as well. I expect lots of people will be there to note 100 years since the ANZAC landing in Gallipoli.

What’s On?

We have had a ‘nude food’ (no packaging) day, a fundraiser for the vision impaired, the Easter Raffle, the Grade 5/6 camp to Gelantipy, various information sessions, swimming and aths sports, and lots of learning.

Overall an excellent term of learning at Yarragon K-6. And we had some fun too!

APRIL SPORTS REPORTS: Bowls & Cricket

History of Yarragon Bowling Club - photos and memorabilia wanted! Club member Betty Roberts recently spoke of a desire to compile a document of the history of the Yarragon Bowling Club. So, perhaps if you have any stories of your experiences as a past-member, now is the time to tell! Betty would like to request that if anyone has any photos (that we can copy) or other items of historical interest about the club to contact her on 5633 1361 or [email protected]. Many thanks!

End of season presentation night After an exciting and fun-filled season of bowling it is time to hand it to the winners of the club’s various competitions and to simply have a jolly good night of laughter and good food. The annual Presentation Night, this year

held on Friday 27 March, is a great opportunity for all to relax and reflect on their achievements of the season and to enjoy some companionship with fellow bowlers from nearby clubs. Well done to all those who were awarded trophies.

Indoor ‘carpet bowls’ to resume soon It’s that time of the year again when, somewhat reluctantly, bowlers put away their lawn bowls for the winter and get into some practice on the indoor carpet mat green. It is anticipated that the 2015 pennant season of the indoor variety of our great game will commence on the 4th of May. Anyone interested in taking part or simply coming along to watch, please do join us at the clubrooms, or give Jason a call on 5634 2580.

BACK on the GREENS in 2015 By Rosemary Bosse

Well another season has come to an end. What a way to finish with Division 5 getting back to back Premierships; only the third in the club’s history. Once again they came from the obviously lucky fourth spot to take the cup. For all the spectators there that day it was a very tense situation in excellent weather conditions. They enjoyed a brilliant game of cricket with an even better result. Man of the Match went to Carlo Lerfone, scoring his first half century for the season with a 52. Steve Green collected the Batting Average, Champion Player and Cricketer of the Year awards for Division 5 in the League. Division 1 is in the rebuilding stages. Gamini Kumara, our international player, won the Batting Average and Champion Player and Cricketer of the Year awards. Division 3 was hard done by with players just passing in and out all season. It was great to see John Malacarne take on the role as captain and produce some fantastic wins to get them off the bottom of the ladder. The Under 14s were a very young side with half the team in their first ever season of cricket. This absolutely great bunch of kids improved tremendously from the start to the finish of the season, and will in the future be a force to be reckoned with.

The Under 12s had a good time as well. This age group is all about developing skills and learning about the game. They won only one game and were proud as punch. They always displayed great sportsmanship. Paula Borsato received the Glenda Jagoe Award for Outstanding Service to Cricket at the League presentation night. Thanks to the local proprietors, who supported our trivia night; Yarragon Hotel, Penny Worth Of Lollies, De’Koda Hair, 101 Ale House, Yarragon Pharmacy, Crystal Ocean, Shoealicious, YGP, Brown & Wigg, and Yarragon Newsagents. Thanks to all our sponsors, volunteers, committee and players for a fantastic year. I personally have had a great time learning the ropes in a new position and sport. Here's to the Aussies bringing home the World Cup just like Division 5 did for Yarragon. Yours in Cricket: Yarragon Cricket Club.
