Circle: Activity - Community Color Hunt
Community Helpers

Objective: This activity reinforces pattern and color recognition as students work in teams to complete a series of matching tasks in this scavenger hunt.
Materials: • Visual sequence strip (provided)• Community image cards (provided)• Color cards (provided)• Tape• Bags/baskets• Timer
Duration: 10 to 15 minutes
Preparation:1. Print, laminate, and cut out:
a. Visual sequence strip b. Community image cards (1 set for entire class)c. Color cards (1 set for entire class)d. These cards must be printed in color.
2. Using tape, attach one color card to each bag/basket.3. Hide the community image cards around the classroom. 4. Set aside one community image card and one color card and basket for demonstration purposes. 5. Have visual sequence strip on hand and refer to it throughout activity to guide students.

Activity Script:We recommend using the following verbal cues as you model each step.
1. “Today we’re going to go on a community color scavenger hunt! Let’s break up into teams first.” [As you walk students through each step of the activity, point to its corresponding step on the visual sequence strip. Divide students into four teams. If class size is small, consider having students hunt individually.]
2. “Now, I’ve hidden different colored picture cards all around the classroom. I’m going to hand your team a basket with a specific color on it. Your team should find all the cards that have pictures with the same color that’s on your basket. Please don’t start until I say, ‘Go.’” [Distribute baskets with color cards to teams or individual students.]
3. “If you find a card with a color that matches the one on your basket, grab it, and put it in your basket. If you find the same card twice, leave it where you found it and keep looking for more.” [Model picking up a card, identifying that it matches, and placing it in a basket.]
4. “When you hear this timer go off, stop hunting, and return to the circle.” [Demonstrate the sound of the timer so students know what to expect.]
5. “GO!” [Set timer for 5 -7 minutes. Students search the room for matching cards and place them in their baskets. Assist students as needed.]
6. TIMER BUZZ [When the timer goes off, students return to circle and share the cards they found with the class.]
