Saturday afternoon and The Parish Room Opens After 13 years of great effort by a small team of volunteers led by Ann Mansell, the Parish Room (opposite the old Cabin shop) was officially opened by the Reverend Bronwen Gamble during the Celebration Weekend.

For those volunteers it was a moment of great pride to see the building usable again after

decades of neglect. For visitors it was a moment of surprise. For all, seeing the photographs and displays brought back memories and, for some, encouraged moments of reflection.

When you visit, don't miss the names that children scratched on one of the windows—during an idle moment(?)—and the date: 1851.

Other activities over the weekend were the church bells being rung and the bell-ringers inviting villagers to come and have a go themselves.

Thirty-nine teddy bears parachuted from the church tower before St. Giles' 800th birthday party where the results of the birthday cake, photo and card competitions were announced and weekend drew to a close with an open-air service.

On the Sunday the Church had their Annual Teddy Bear Jump and the Celebration cakes were judgedCake Winners for the The Great Cropwell Cake Off ...There were 8 entries and all were on display at St Giles.

They were all very different and all looked fantastic.

After much deliberating the judges made their decision.

1st : A magnificent 3D cake of St Giles' Church - Lesley Shuttleworth

2nd : A beautifully iced cake with lots of detail - Sheila Sheriff

3rd : A cake by one of the bell ringers showing the bells & bell ropes - Trish Allinson

Picnic in the Park: one to rememberA warm, still, evening with a clear sunny sky, what better than to fill it with music, dancing, fun and fireworks. A real family event with hundreds of people enjoying a great village get-together.

Over the past 15 years, Picnic in the Park has grown in popularity. The basic format remains unchanged but its organisation and the variety and quality of entertainers has continually improved. Well done and thanks to Jan Towndrow and Peter Walters for organising it, and also to the many, many people who have devoted time and effort to make the whole of the Celebration Weekend a success. And thanks to our Parish Council and the many local businesses who supported the events.

With only a month left to go until the last game, Cropwell CC can reflect on what has been a fantastic season so far. To date we have played 15 games, winning 10 and losing 5. We have scored more runs already this season than we have in any full season, and more importantly, we are still having fun!

On an individual basis, we have had 2 players this season score 100+ runs in a game, something we have not had before. Hopefully, we can have a 3rd before the end of the season.

Preparation has already started on the final game of the season, the Bishop v Butler Derek Randall Boomerang Match. Captains have been selected for both sides and the mind games are starting. This game is on Sunday 27th September, with a 1.00pm start. As with last year, we will be having a BBQ & Bouncy Castle and hope that there will be a good crowd to cheer along both teams. We have a bar that serves teas, coffees, alcohol and snacks, so please come along.

If there is anyone that is interested in playing next season (any age!), please feel free to contact me or any member of the team.

Our Local HistoryAnne Terzza, on behalf of the Heritage Group, explains the history behind our Village Names and Life from years ago. AllotmentsTravelling towards Owthorpe there had been Allotment Gardens for the use of working men in a field to the east directly over the Lime Kiln Inn crossroads from about 1875, variously called the Negro and Promised Land, it was a long walk for the men to reach the allotments.

There were also allotments – The Chapel Gardens – on the Cropwell to Langar road but they were reserved for the members of the Cropwell Methodist Friendly Society.

To fill the need for more allotments the Trustees of an 11 acre field one of the Church Glebe lands which belonged to the benefice of the Vicar of Cropwell Bishop at that time the Rev George Gould was approached and were willing to let the field at 30/-d per acre per annum. A Benefice is an endowed church office yielding an income to its holder through property or revenue.

At a parish council meeting on the 18th November 1896 an Allotment Committee was formed of the following men:

John Harrison. John Loach. Thomas Hand. Thomas Beet. Thomas Clarke. John Hand. Samuel Down. Thomas Taylor.

Allotment Holders were :J Harrison. Thomas Taylor. George Fogg. James Mountain. J Loach.

Wm Groves. Thomas Beet. J Hand. Wm Widdowson. Thomas Guy. Charles Harper. Thomas Hampson. T T Clark. Isaac Taylor. John Parnham.

Thomas Hand. S Dawn.

Some of those in the list were unable to read or write but what they lacked in schooling did not prevent James Mountain and George Fogg from being expert sinkers of wells and mineshafts, all were good gardeners and a friendly rivalry added zest to their efforts.

Some men had fair sized kitchen gardens attached to their homes so used the allotments for growing corn for their backyard hens, to feed a pig and provide straw for its bedding. Many cottagers at this time kept a pig to fatten up and slaughter in the Autumn. After the business of curing the sides of pork and hams in salting troughs they were hung from the ceiling of the “houseplace” covered in an old white pillowcase to keep it clean and dry.

It was an important rule that pigs were never slaughtered except when there was an “R” in the month. Nowadays we are fortunate to have modern fridges and freezers to store the meat at an acceptable temperature.

Allotments available - Half Plot: £32 per year or Full Plot: £60

If you are interested, why not arrange to view what is available by contacting Cropwell Bishop Allotment Association.

Cropwell Bishop Heritage Group: a New Member's View Having moved to Cropwell Bishop from East Yorkshire in March this year, my wife and I have recently become members of the Heritage Group. We are no strangers to the work of the Heritage Group since we have travelled down from East Yorkshire on a number of occasions to attend the regular talks and meetings which the Heritage group organise.

On the Saturday of Celebration weekend I went along to witness the opening of recently restored Parish room and to view the display which had been set up .

After the tape- cutting ceremony, performed by Rev. Bronwen Gamble, the assembled visitors were able to go inside to see the results of the work which had been put in by Heritage Group Committee members and other volunteers. Among the visitors was the previous incumbent at St. Giles, the Rev. Andrew Wigram, accompanied by his wife Catherine. I was also told that Rev. Wigram had been instrumental in the re-establishment of the current Heritage Group in 2002, with the help of some of the members of the original 1970`s group.

Although the Parish room appears relatively small from the outside, the restoration work has made good use of the interior, which is spacious and light. The Secretary, Ann Mansell, told me that the room could comfortably accommodate 20 people for meetings, talks, etc. The exhibition which had been put on by the Heritage Group had much to hold the visitors` interest, and a number of the Committee members were on hand to answer questions and provide more information on the rich heritage of the village. Of particular interest was the extensive display of the school photographs from the earliest days right up to the present, and I watched as many of the visitors of all ages examined these photographs to look for themselves and their former school friends.

Overall, there was plenty on the displays to interest everyone, but at the same time such an exhibition could only show a small selection of the huge volume of recorded and oral history. Cropwell Bishop is an ancient village with a heritage which has accumulated over the centuries. The Heritage Group continues to work hard to research and record all the aspect of this heritage for the benefit of today`s villagers and those that follow. Now that I can count myself in those numbers, I would certainly hope to contribute to this valuable work.

On V.E. Day in 1945, as peace extends across Europe, Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret are allowed out to join the celebrations. It is a night full of excitement, danger and the first flutters of romance..... This is a "bright, breezy and charming" film which takes a cue from The King's Speech, fashioning a diverting entertainment from a footnote from royal history.

Friday 16 October A Royal Night Out

Based on the literary classic by Thomas Hardy, FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD is the story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors.... This lovingly shot and beautifully acted film was enjoyed by public and critics alike. Described as "classy and seductive" and "an engaging tale filled with emotional richness" this is a lovely way to start our new season of Cropwell Cinema showings.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR AMERICAN SERVICEMEN IN BRITAIN - Friday 9th October (Village Ventures - Presented by Fol Espoir) This rib tickling new show is the first of just two Village Ventures acts that we have been allocated this year. It’s 1942 and a horde of Yankee servicemen have just arrived in England - where the locals speak a strange dialect, boil all their food, and talk endlessly about the weather. The Americans see the Brits as a strange race. Get ready to judge for yourself in a night of joyous laughter and downright silliness as a crack team of experts attempt to explain the rules of British life. Inspired by the 1942 pamphlet given to GIs on their way to Blighty, the show will take the audience back to the British home front, where two American officers have been charged with explaining British life to their recently arrived countrymen. The problem is, they’ve only just arrived themselves! Will the plucky team succeed in explaining the quirks and customs of everyday British life? Or will Hitler’s propaganda split the allies asunder? The future of the free world hangs in the balance. Check out this link if you would like a sneak preview of the show...http://www.folespoir.co.uk/#/current-show/4560052638 Tickets for this event are priced at just £10.00 for adults (£8.00 for children) and include a Hot Dog and Popcorn. Tickets available from Gary Jowett Butchers or from The Parish Clerk. Doors Open at 7.30pm.

Comments on revised bus service for Cropwell Bishop (Commencing 1st September 2015)The buses serving Cropwell Bishop will again have a major revision from 1st September 2015.

The Rushcliffe Green via Radcliffe will be replaced by the Rushcliffe Villager 2 travelling to Nottingham via Cotgrave. A county subsidised 850/852 service will provide limited links (2 peak and 3 daytime) to Radcliffe via Cropwell Butler and Upper Saxondale and 3 daytime links to Cotgrave via Colston Basset.

Most residents would have preferred to keep the route to town via Radcliffe but Trent Barton chose the commercial option of linking the villager services with the old 22 service. The Villager 2 journey to town will omit Cropwell Butler and travel from Church St. back along Hoe View towards Cotgrave. Despite this shortening of the route, the journey to town will take 40 minutes rather than the 35 minutes with the existing Greens via Radcliffe. The revised timings – on the hour from Cropwell and at 45 minutes past the hour from Friar Lane with more frequent peak time service – may suit some.

The Villager 2 and 850 provide various commuter options. There is a later commuter/shopper bus at 08.26 (starting from Hoe View, missing Church St) with Concession pass holders having to wait until 10.00am to use their passes.

The really good news is the introduction of evening services at 7.30 and 10.10pm from Friar Lane. These will be on a trial ‘use it or lose it’ basis for a 6 month period.

The Villager 2 continues to provide a link to Bingham (departing from both Cropwell and Bingham at a convenient 25 minutes past the hour) but it does take 35 minutes each way!

Cropwell Butler and Upper Saxondale residents are particularly upset by the serious reductions in their service. We had asked that the County subsidised 850/852 service should fill the gaps left by the loss of the Greens and run an hourly service to Radcliffe. The County do say they will look again at the proposals.

We have a concern that the County’s less useful bus service will deter passengers and provide the excuse to again cut the service making further budget savings. Hopefully the County will take note of our proposals to provide a better subsidised bus service using the available resources.

The new timetables are printed within this newsletter or can be found at: http://cropwellbishop-pc.gov.uk/omls/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Copy-of-rushcliffe-villager-2.pdf http://cropwellbishop-pc.gov.uk/category/transport/

Jan Towndrow, Parish Clerk, will be pleased to record and pass on any observations and comments you may have on the revised services.

Cllr John Greenwood, 1st August 2015
