Thank you

Thank you for choosing to fundraise for Surf Life Saving WA. Going to the beach is part of our West Australian way of life. And volunteer lifesavers are an integral part of our beach culture. Saving lives is what we do!

Our volunteers are men and women, young and old. But they’re all committed to your community and ensuring you can enjoy visiting our stunning beaches and be safe.

By raising funds for Surf Life Saving WA, you’ll be a vital part of saving lives between the flags too. Your support will help provide rescue equipment, resources, and training for volunteer surf lifesavers.

We’ll all be safer on our beaches because of your support.

This guide will help you get started with registering your fundraiser. If you have any questions that aren’t covered in this guide, or would like to talk to us about your idea, please contact our fundraising team at [email protected] or 9207 6666.

What’s required – venue, supplies, permits

Depending on the type of event you choose, you may need to get permits, hire a venue, organise supplies like tables, chairs, cups, plates... Keep in mind that some of these may take time to organise, so make sure you allow yourself plenty of planning time.

You may also need to check with the venue owner or your local council to see what permits or applications you need.

Keep your costs in mind

Some events have high cost outlays. These events sound like a lot of fun but if the aim of the game is raising money, having a high cost outlay might not be the best idea.

Will you need help from friends and family?

Depending on the size of your event, you can consider inviting friends and family to help out. Create an organising committee and share the planning. This way everyone involved can be part of the fundraising action.

Pick a suitable date

When picking your event date, keep in mind other important dates such as public holidays, school holidays, big sporting events, or community events. Try to pick a date and time that suits your target audience - so think about who you’ll be inviting when you plan your event.

Once you’ve registered your event with Surf Life Saving WA and received our Authority to Fundraise letter, we’ll also send you a Fundraiser Toolkit. Your toolkit will guide you through the process of holding your fundraiser, as well as some handy tools to use along the way.

It will include your ‘fundraising supporter’ logo and easy to use templates to help you spread the word.

This is the fun part!

But there are few responsibilities you’ll need to think about when you’re holding your event.

Collecting donations

You can collect donations directly from your supporters. If you choose to do this please make sure you keep all funds in a secure environment.

If you don’t want to collect cash, you can set up an online fundraising page on a site such as Everyday Hero or GiveNow. You can design your page, set your fundraising target and you’ll get a unique URL to share with your friends and family to help boost your fundraising.

By setting up your own fundraising page, all of the online donations you receive will come directly to Surf Life Saving WA.

Receipts

Donations of $2 and over are tax-deductible and are eligible to receive tax receipts. Those donations made through your online fundraising page will automatically receive a tax-deductible receipt.

If you receive cash donations and the donor would like a receipt, simply record the donor’s name, contact details and donation amount on a Donation Record sheet and send this back to us at the end of your event. We’ll then issue receipts directly to your donors.

Please note: A tax receipt for donations can only be provided when the person does not receive goods or services in return i.e. tax deductible receipts cannot be provided for raffle or movie tickets, food purchases, ticket sales etc.

Use of SLSWA name & logo

We would love you to get the word of your fundraiser event out in your community. We’ll even provide you with a fundraising supporter logo (below) you can use to help promote your event.

Hold your event 5

Just remember that this logo cannot be altered in any way, must be the only Surf Life Saving WA logo used on any promotional material for your event, and only used in the way specified in your toolkit.

This logo can be used for promoting your event only and can’t be used on any goods made for or sold at your fundraising event.

As your event is not run by Surf Life Saving WA, please be clear in any communications that your event is in support of Surf Life Saving WA. You can do this by stating that you are “a Fundraising Supporter for Surf Life Saving Western Australia” and using the logo provided.

Safety

As a fundraiser for SLSWA, you are responsible for ensuring the safety of all attendees of your event. Surf Life Saving WA cannot cover you under their insurance policies. Surf Life Saving WA will not be held liable for any accidents or injuries that may occur.

Any donations you receive should be returned to Surf Life Saving WA within 14 days of the conclusion of your event. We will provide you with a Fundraising Banking Form with details on how to bank your funds.
