History & BT position

Fiskerton cum Morton Action Group

Campaigned to have the Parish included in Notts County Council

plans for BT broadband

Campaign successful BUT:

Plans caught in legal wrangles

If these are resolved superfast broadband is upgrades will not

commence until late 2017/early 2018

The upgraded speed is not known

BT admit that the Parish is “technically challenging”

Options reviewed by Action Group

F4RN established to pursue a Community broadband service

PW

Superfast broadband “expected to be available from July 2017”

Copper vs Fibre Quotes…

Evidence to Parliamentary Committee by Peter Cochrane

former BT Chief Technology Officer, March 2012

“Fibre to the cabinet is one of the biggest mistakes humanity

has made. It ties a knot in the cable in terms of bandwidth

and imposes huge unreliability risks … It is a shame, but I

understand why people have made that decision.”

CH

BT or F4RN?

BT “Fibre to the Cabinet”

Low Risk

Supported by BT

F4RN “Fibre to the Home”

100Mbps to every property in village –upload & downloadPotential to upgrade to 1Gbps or higher100% fibre (with wireless as interim measure in village centre)Delivered this yearQuick repairs - skills in village to carry out repairs backed by “call-out” service with IT companyIf well supported, monthly charge would be much less than BT*Surpluses returned to community

Not delivered until July 2017

38Mbps – download only (76Mbps if

very close to cabinet)

“last mile” is copper or aluminium

cable so subject to faults /

degradation

Speeds drop off considerably with

distance

No guarantee of “3 box solution”

Unlikely to be upgraded to “G.Fast”

(300+Mbps in urban areas)

Repair times depend on BT

Needs Community to come together

to invest and build network

Requires Community to manage

network in longer term

May mean that NCC do not subsidise

BT FTTC solution

No need for Community to do

anything

*Compared to BT 76Mbps connection. When compared to 38Mbps service prices are comparable CH
