NEW! Avoiding the High Cost of AgingProtect your assets, minimize dependence on family members, and control how you receive nursing or home care. With health care costs rising and longer life expectancies, funding long-term care needs is an increasing concern for millions of people. According to the US Dept. of Health and Human Services, about 9 million Americans, now 65 or older, will require long-term care. This number is expected to rise by 25% by 2020. According to one survey, the average annual cost of nursing home care is $74,806 (this figure can fluctuate depending on the level of care required). Standard health insurance policies and Medicare usually do not pay for long-term care expenses associated with chronic illness. Medicaid provides limited long-term care benefits - and only after a person’s assets have been depleted. Find out your options!Supplies: A $5 materials fee will be collected in class. Springtime in Anza-Borrego Desert AdventureSaturday, April 10, 2010Join photographer extraordinaire, Terry Matsuoka, as he takes us on a springtime adventure into the Anza-Borrego Desert for a fun filled day trip. Even if you only enjoy the great food at Kendall’s Restaurant, the beautiful desert landscapes and a tasty trip into Julian, this is the perfect excursion for you. However, if you like the idea of learning to take better pictures of wildflowers, birds and desertscapes, this is going to be the one trip you won’t want to miss. Come along for a photographer’s paradise as Terry teaches you how to get the very most out of your camera. In the spring, Anza-Borrego flourishes with wild flowers that carpet parts of the desert floor with brilliant shades of purple, white, crimson and yellow. For those who like birdwatching, birds that are unique to the desert are out in abundance during this time of year. Capture the delicate beauty of the desert on your SRL or digital camera and show off your photographic gems on the MiraCosta College’s Community Services website page set up specially for those who go on this excursion. Once we have toured the beautiful spots in the desert, we will ride our luxury coach back through Julian where you can spend an hour strolling along the quaint streets full of shops or eating Julian apple pie in this historic town. A picnic lunch from Kendall’s is included in this tour. Please wear comfortable shoes, sunscreen and/or a hat, and bring water. You do not need to bring a camera as the trip will be enjoyable even if you do not wish to take pictures.Fee: $75.00Bus will pick up and drop off at MiraCosta College Oceanside campus, parking lot 1A only.Departure 8 a.m. Return: 6:30 p.m.

Cinco de Mayo at Olvera Street, L.A.Wednesday, May 5th, 2010 Enjoy a relaxed luxury coach to Olvera Street where you will be able to spend the day enjoying all the events. Olvera Street is in the oldest part of Downtown Los Angeles, California, and is part of the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument. Many Latinos refer to it as “La Placita Olvera.” Olvera Street is always teeming with Mexican culture, but the historic area will be overflowing May 5th for the Cinco de Mayo fiesta. El Pueblo de Los Angeles will present traditional folkloric music and entertainment: Latin jazz, Spanish rock and the requisite mariachis will all be on la mano. Niños can enjoy carnival games, rides and piñata breaking. Free educational and cultural workshops will be offered throughout the festival. But most importantly, the street vendors will be out in full force selling Mexican delights like stuffed chiles, tamales, taquitos, tacos and churros. Bring your appetite! Fee: $50.00Bus will pick up and drop off at MiraCosta College Oceanside campus, parking lot 1A only.Departure 8:30 a.m. Return: 6 p.m.

Renoir at the LACMA Second trip! It's not too late!

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010Guide: McNeil SargentOffered for a limited time—don’t miss this incredible exhibit! Renoir in the 20th Century looks at the last three decades of his career when “he turned to an art that was decorative, classical, and informed by a highly personal interpretation of the Great Tradition.” Because these works do not fit into the history of high modernism, they are often misunderstood. This is the first monographic study dedicated to Renoir since the comprehensive retrospective of 1985 in Paris. And, it is the first exhibit ever mounted by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Find out how this exhibition bridges the divide that exists between art of the 19th and 20th Centuries. Other special exhibitions include American Stories: Paintings of Everyday Life (1765-1915), and Contemporary Projects 12: Robin Rhode. Additional collections at the LACMA include: African, American, Latin American, Egyptian, Islamic, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese art; art of the ancient Americas, the ancient Near East, and the Pacific; contemporary and modern art; costumes and textiles; decorative arts and design; European paintings and sculpture; German Expressionist art; Greek, Roman, and Etruscan art; prints and drawings; South and Southeast Asian art; and the Wallis Annenberg photography department. There will be a no-host lunch.
