Canadian Industrial Heritage Centre DelegationCommittee of the Whole - Community Services - May 7,2012

Good evening Mayor Friel and Members of Council. My name is Rob Adlam and I am Presidentof the Canadian Industrial Heritage Centre Board of Directors. Some time ago City of Brantford Property Management staff set about the removal of potentiallycombustible materials from the various buildings that comprise the complex at 347 GreenwichSt. During the course of this task, staff collected a number of items that were felt to be ofheritage significance in terms of the manufacturing operations that once took place there. Sincethat time these items have been stored ina locked building on Greenwich St.An article published in The Expositor that details a tour of the buildings and site, dated June 21,2011, describes the situation this way: "Meanwhile there have been efforts to save memorabilia, signs and artifacts connected to the industries that were housed on the site for so many years. The memorabilia includes signs, blueprints, jigs and other materials used in the manufacturingprocess and theyhave been set aside for the Canadian Industrial Heritage Museum."Prior to this I had been shown these items, by Manger of Technical Services of the PropertyManagement Department, and made aware of their existence. A t that point in time, there wasno clear path forward as to what was to become of the buildings at 347 Greenwich. Soonafterward the City entered into negotiations with Terrasan Corporation and a plan was putforward that would possibly reuse some of the structures. Keeping the items on site until a finalagreement and development plan was agreed to that, at the time indicated an industrial heritagetheme, seemed prudent. Now that Council has decided on the direction it will pursue, with the demolition of the buildingwhere these items are in storage, I would request that Council give consideration to donatingthese items to the Canadian Industrial Heritage Centre, so that we can place them in our ownprotective storage in order to bring them back as part of an interpretive display for publiceducation and the enjoyment of the community at a future date. The CIHC would assumeresponsibility for the removal and transportation of these items from the site.It is important to secure the protection and future use of items such as these. Many similarpieces have been destroyed in the past, have left the community for display elsewhere, or areheld in private collections. Including these pieces in the collection of the Canadian IndustrialHeritage Centre fits well with our mandate to tell the incredible story of Brantford'smanufacturing heritage, which set the City prominently on both national and world stages.Display and interpretation will give a sense pride in past accomplishments and appreciation forthe labours of the men and women whose efforts built the City and gave it such notoriety. This isa story that Brantford needs to be sharing with the world, and the CIHC is well poised to do thatthrough our ongoing activities.Thank you for your consideration of this request.Rob Adlam

    BMemorandum

To: Mayor Chris Friel and Members of CouncilFrom: Helen Borowicz, Policy PlannerDate: May 4,2012.Subject: 347 Greenwich st.Heritage Committee request for site access and donation of artifacts

At the Brantford Heritage Committee meeting on May 1, 2012, Members discussed theproposed demolition of the buildings at 347 Greenwich Street. The Committee referredto Council's resolution that included the salvage of bricks from the buildings and notedthat other heritage features could also be considered for salvage. The Committeerequested that access to the site would provide an opportunity to photograph anddocument the existing condition prior to demolition and this needs to occur as soon aspossible, within the next few weeks. It was also noted that there are artifacts such assigns and remnants of industrial material that could be donated to the CanadianIndustrial Heritage Centre. The Committee made the following recommendation:

    1. THAT the Brantford Heritage Committee REQUEST PERMISSION foraccess to 347 Greenwich Street, between May 8 - May 16, to evaluatearchitectural features on the site for possible heritage retention to beidentified in the Request for Proposal.

    2. THAT the Brantford Heritage Committee request City Council TODONATE the stored industrial artifacts from 347 Greenwich to theCanadian Industrial Heritage Centre.

Members of the Committee expressed concern that the proposed demolition of thebuildings at 347 Greenwich Street will be expedited and were of the opinion that theyneed to seek access to the site quickly.
