Leaf SeasonLeaf pick-up will officially begin on

Friday, October 13. We decided tokeep the street schedule in place, albeit with a few minor changes. Theschedule appears on page 10 of thisnewsletter.

First, please remember that if it rainswe will not pick up leaves that partic-ular day. In all likelihood those leaveson those streets would not be doneuntil the following week on your regu-larly scheduled pick up day. We havebeen questioned a great deal abouttaking that approach. If we backtrackand do streets that were missed wethrow the entire schedule off. If weget done early in a day or on non-recycling Thursdays we will try to pickup those streets that were bypassed. There may be times when pick-up isparticularly heavy and we cannot getto all the streets. We will do every-thing we can to backtrack when it isnot weather related. Please be patient. The Public Works staff works very hardduring this time of year and we will dothe best we can.

Leaves OnlyPlease remember that the leaf pick-

up is reserved for leaves. Please donot place sticks, old plants, bushes, orany non-leaf material into the leafpiles. This clogs our leaf machine andhas even on occasion has broken itdown.

Do Landscapers Leave Leaves? Finally, if you have landscapers that

manage your lawn care, make sureyou are getting what you pay for. Wehave found landscapers that are charg-ing residents for leaf removal, when, infact, they are just blowing them outonto the street for the Borough to pickup. We certainly will pick them up,but you may be overpaying for a serv-ice that the landscaping company isnot actually providing you.

Just in Time for Snow RemovalThe last pick-up day will be on

Wednesday, December 6. After thatday your leaves must be bagged andput out with your regular garbage. Ifthere are any questions please call thePublic Works Department at (412) 242-2410.

Training Pays OffOn August 15 the Edgewood VFD

had a call that was later described as aonce in a lifetime call by all emergencypersonnel on scene. That was the tourbus accident on the Parkway. We trainregularly for vehicle accidents but noth-ing to this scale was ever imagined, butthe crew we had that night handled itlike it was an everyday occurrence.Captain Halle was inside with a DeputyChief from Swissvale FD, an EMT from

EAPS and an EMT from the City ofPittsburgh. In less than 45 minutes theyremoved seats from the passenger sideof the bus and those that entangled thepatient to free her from the wreckage.Firefighters Doug Greer, Ben Reynoldsand Teddy Bowman made countlesstrips up the embankment carryingequipment needed by those insidewhile Firefighter Steve Kromholz pro-tected them with a hose line on thediesel that was leaking from the bus.Assistant Chief Kevin Laird was han-dling the operational level while I waskept busy managing multiple agencies.A total of five fire departments and fourmedical agencies made the operationrun effortlessly. I thank all the agenciesthat assisted us that night.

This weekend I received a complimenton behalf of the department by two topAllegheny County Emergency Manage-ment Official that the EVFD did an out-standing job on this incident. I have neverbeen prouder of the department. Over thelast year we have grown by leaps andbounds, but it’s not just the number ofmembers that we have but the dedicationand determination the members of thedepartment have in going above andbeyond the call of duty.

Ribs and ChickenThank you for once again making

the ribs and chicken dinner a success. This year we beat the rain and weresold out before Mother Nature rearedthe annual Community Day monsoon.I hate to say it but it actually felt goodafter spending the day in the heat.

Edgewood Stars in New NovelFormer Edgewoodian Kim Edwards,

who now teaches at the University ofKentucky, has set her latest book, TheMemory Keeper’s Daughter, in andaround Edgewood. Featured settingsinclude Koenig Field and the RegentSquare Theater.

Kim lived on West Hutchinson from1992 to 1996, so, of course, the book isavailable at the C.C. Mellor MemorialLibrary. It was recently released inpaperback as well. The PittsburghPost-Gazette called it “masterfully writ-ten…a compelling story” which “takeson the cadence of poetry.”

Edgewood Court Wins 8th AwardFor an apartment complex that

doesn’t actually reach the curb,Edgewood Court has won an astonish-ing number of “curb appeal” awards –eight consecutive honors from theApartment Excellence Awards, spon-sored annually by the ApartmentAssociation of Metropolitan Pittsburgh. The awards are decided by a commit-

tee of apartment managers, leasingagents and builders.

The man behind the plaques atEdgewood Court Apartments is NormFarrish, who calls himself “chief cookand bottle washer – one minute I’mleasing an apartment and the next I’mfixing a toilet.” Officially the ResidentManager, Norm has worked at the 70-unit Edgewood Court apartments fornine years now.

Norm took the job three years afterretiring from the truck equipment busi-ness, where he sold equipment to theBorough of Edgewood and theWilkinsburg-Penn Joint WaterAuthority, among his many clients in30 states. “I always liked Edgewood, even before I came here,” he says.

Retirement wasn’t for Norm. “I trav-eled 30 states, and then all of a sud-den, I just stopped. I couldn’t do it.”The polished grounds at EdgewoodCourt prove that out. Norm maintainsthe plantings, parking lots, and picnicground, where he also sponsors anannual pig roast for residents.

Residents, who “come from all over”according to Norm, stay an average ofeight to ten years at Edgewood Court, although there are two tenants whohave lived there more than 25 years, another testimony to the appeal of theplace.
