Board of Directors 2012
Community College Foundation ”supporting Lake Region State College since 1959”
e’re happy to report conclusion of another successful year of fund-
raising to support opportunities at Lake Region State College. We
have exceeded the goal we set a year ago—Almost 600 donors from
the Lake Region community and beyond helped us raise more than
$333,000.
Because of their generosity, we were able to award $205,749 in
scholarships to 233 students … we supported Royals athletics and the Paul
Hoghaug Library … we published Branches and Shorelines … we provided
funds for public relations and alumni research … guests at the Flashback to
the Sixties Key Event raised $115,000—in one evening!—to support LRSC.
All of these things have been possible because this community really
loves its college!
The Community College Foundation provides special recognition for
donors through the Prof Woll Gift Society. Membership is based upon the
total of an individual’s or business’s gifts to the foundation during the annual
12-month campaign which ends each year on June 30.
We’re proud of our supportive donors, and on behalf of the
foundation, here is a special salute to each and every one of you!
Thanks to your commitment, Lake Region
State College continues to flourish!

gift to the Community College Foundation will open doors for students and build a legacy in
our community:
$500 will buy books for a student for a semester.
$1,500 will pay half of a student’s tuition/fees for a semester.
Gifts of all sizes are encouraged to strengthen extra-curricular programs which are so critical to
helping students feel engaged with and proud of their college. LRSC now has 12 campus clubs
and six varsity team sports.
Support for the arts is needed and welcomed, including funding for music, theater, literature,
and visual arts.
Scholarship funding options: Annual Scholarships with a commitment of $500 per year for five
years and Endowed Scholarships with a commitment of $10,000 or greater.
A tax savings option—the North Dakota 40% Tax Credit—can be accessed with a gift of $5,000.
Funding to support the Technical Center initiative to renovate and expand classrooms and labor-
atories for technical programs is a priority. Details about the plan and the needs are available.
oday, the Community College Foundation is led by a 27-member board of directors which
oversees its program of work. Since its beginning, the foundation has been lean and strategi-
cally focused on core education priorities. Its spending policies are carefully thought out, clearly
articulated, and always tied directly to important educational purposes.
The Lake Region Community College Foundation of Devils Lake, North Dakota, works hard
to be a good steward of the dollars entrusted to it. Please be confident that all funds received by the
foundation are used for purposes directed by the donor and approved by the foundation’s board of
directors.
To ensure that every dollar is properly accounted for, an independent audit is commissioned
each year. A complete copy of the FY12 audit report, prepared by Brady Martz and Associates,
P.C., is available through the Foundation Office at Lake Region State College.

E
he Hall of Fame was unveiled in June of 1991 as part of the college’s fiftieth anniversary celebration. Planners were seeking a way to publicly appreciate and recognize those who have invested their time and energy, talents, and resources in the school over the years. The Hall of Fame features pictures and biographical sketches of inductees as well as trophies and special recognition for campus organizations and outstanding students. This year, we are pleased to honor the following individuals through induction into the LRSC Hall of Fame:
1989/1990 Lady Royals Basketball Team—In 1989/90, the Lady Royals were a standout
team. Together they created game records that stand today. They also built memories and friend-ships to last a lifetime. At the close of the 1989/90 season, the Lady Royals had a 31-and-4 win/loss record. Their winning streak of 22 victories in a row has never been repeated. Their team captain, Darcy Deutsch (Cascaes) was named an All-American for the NJCAA at the end of the season. Darcy was
also named Most Valuable Player in the Mon-Dak Conference. In addition, Darcy and teammate
Jacqui Short (Nelson) were named to the 1st Team in the All-Conference ??? Lori Wang and Sandy
Tschepen were named to the All-Conference 2nd Team. Their coach, Duane Schwab, who was in his
first year of coaching women’s collegiate basketball, was named Region 13 Coach of the Year. The
team captured the state/region crown by defeating community college teams from Williston, Crookston, and Madison, Wisconsin. The Lady Royals advanced to the national tournament in Tyler, Texas, where they won their first game over Sinclair State, Ohio, but then suffered a loss to Emmanuel of Georgia. This remarkable team included ten students from North Dakota, one from South Dakota, one from Minnesota, and one from Winnipeg: Darcy Deutsch (Cascaes), Jane Dokken (Holden), Rita Hardy
(Visser), Alisa Herbel (Wood), Denise Kitsch (Hornstein), Leann Moldenhauer (Olson), Collette Schaan (Schwabe), Tammy Schuler, Laurie Seman, Jacqui Short (Nelson), Sandy Tschepen, Lori Wang (Youngdahl),
and Marcee Winnegge (Logie).
The team has been excited about the Hall of Fame recognition and this opportunity to get to-gether once again. The following is a bit of information they decided everyone should know about them, written by Rita Hardy Visser:
“Not only was it a team of just three sophomores returning; everything was NEW. Duane Schwab was just starting coaching women’s college basketball! He had coached for years, but this was his first go with women and college! He had a new coaching staff in Jim Nixon, and between the two of them, their lives changed drastically that year. Keep in mind, the only two women Duane had ever had to listen to were his mother and his lovely wife, Linda. Now, he had thirteen women telling him what
they thought was the right way to do things. Things were NEW for Coach!”
“For the sophomores on the team, it was a NEW year. Darcy Deutsch took the leadership role in stride and took all the freshman under her wing. Tami Schuler and Collette Schaan kept the freshman on task and on target in school as well as at practice. They knew this year would be NEW for them as well. Coming off a winning season with some strong upper-classmen, they knew they had a tradition
to uphold, and they were the NEW leaders!”

“For the freshman, NEW was a way of life—new relationships, new freedom, new coaches, new teammates, new schedules, and yes, new responsibilities. Looking back, the oddest mix was Denise Kitsch and Rita Hardy who walked in the doors bitter enemies but became lifelong friends. Jacqui Short and Jane Dokken were assigned to be roommates despite the fact they had played head-to-head against each other for years. They too became friends and are still close today. Marcee Winnegge, Ali-
sa Herbel, and Leann Moldenhauer, the ‘Class A girls,’ were wondering what the heck they were do-ing with a bunch of Class B’ers, but again, lifelong friendships started that first day. Sandy Tschepen from South Dakota, Lori Wang from Minnesota, and Laurie Seman from Canada all probably had
second thoughts about their North Dakota decisions.”
“For the parents of the team, life was NEW. They had a new team name to cheer for, they had new colors to wear, and they had new girls to cheer for. They too created lifelong relationships with the
other parents.”
“The NEW team of 1989/90 has moved on to NEW lives. They now have new responsibilities and new directions in their lives—husbands, children, careers, and many interesting pathways. You will see by the hugs shared tonight—among the players, among the players’ parents, and among children of the players—-they are still friends. They stay connected through social media, they share Christmas
cards, and they plan get-togethers just to be able to see each other.”
“Twenty-three years ago, a NEW family was formed. Today, we celebrate more than a team; we
celebrate a family. Thanks, Coach, and thanks Lake Region!!”
n endowment is a wonderful gift that lasts forever! Nearly one hundred endowments have been established by individuals or families wishing to support scholarships or programs at Lake Region State College. Each is supported with a gift of at least ten thousand dollars. Only the earnings from these endowments are used to support yearly awards. Each endowment is also com-memorated with a plaque displayed in Heritage Hall. Scholarship endowment recipient names are engraved on plates attached to the plaques, creating a permanent record of recipients. A story about the individual or organization for which the endowment is named is also on display and is shared with those who benefit from endowment awards. Listed below are endowments which have been established since the last Report to Donors:
—American Legion Post 86 of Minnewaukan was established December 14, 1919. Its name was chosen for two Minnewaukan area residents who died for their country. Fred W. Dietrich served with Company L, 138th Infantry. He died in Meuse, Argonne, France, on September 8, 1918. Menton Gunnerud (sometimes known as Mentor) served with Company F, 157th Infantry. He died of wounds in September 1918 in the Argonne Forest in France. The American Legion, composed of veterans of US military service, promotes community and youth activities and advocates for the needs of veterans. The post’s first project was construction of Memorial Hall in Minnewaukan. The post operated the Roxy Theater in Memorial Hall for many years and also sponsored Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and athletic programs. The post continues to sponsor students attending Boys State and the International Peace Garden Music Camp. The Le-gion also completed a building in 1951 with medical offices on the upper floor and Legion and Auxiliary meeting rooms in the basement. The post was instrumental in constructing and operating the Minnewaukan Swimming Pool. An annual Memorial Day ceremony at the Minnewaukan Cemetery is sponsored by the post which has also served breakfasts for the public on the fourth Sunday of each month since April 1987. American Legion Auxiliary Unit 86 of Minnewaukan was organized March 28, 1921. The unit sponsored delegates to Girls State and conducted fund-raising activities to support the community, the VA Hospital in Fargo, the Veterans Home at Lisbon, the International Peace Garden Music Camp, the Bell Tower at the Peace Gardens, the county Christmas Food Basket, and children at the State Hospital in Grafton. The auxiliary also served dinners following Memorial Day obser-vances for many years. The auxiliary unit was disbanded in 2012. The Gunnerud-Dietrich American Legion Post 86 established this endowment in 2012, and scholarships are awarded each year to students who are military veterans and their descendents.
—Delphia was born in Devils Lake to Hans and Hilma (Hedlund) Hansen in February 1911. She graduated from Devils Lake High School and became a valued community member. During World War II, she began working at the Willard Greenleaf Agency and retired in 1981 when the agency was sold. Delphia married Cecil Halle in June 1944. They farmed east of Devils Lake and lived in town during the winter. They adopted their son, Norman, when he was four years old. Norman served in Vietnam and was married in California. Norman died in 2004 and is survived by his wife, Mari-lyn. Delphia’s husband Cecil died in a tragic automobile accident on August 25, 1962. Delphia was an active member of the First Methodist Church. She volunteered in area nursing
homes for many years. She also rang the Salvation Army bell. After ringing for ten years, she was given her own bell which she rang proudly until she was 98 years old. Delphia last rang the Salva-tion Army bell in 2009. Delphia believed that “kids need education, they really do,” so she left a legacy gift to provide fi-nancial help for college students. The Delphia Halle Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to an exemplary student attending LRSC.
—Corry and Kristin kenner know how to have fun! Throughout the community, they are known as the “go-to” couple for organizing a good time. Very often, the events they plan are partiesi-with-a-purpose. Corry and Kristin are energetic advocates for many worthy causes in our community. They have planned and hosted events to support health care projects, educational support, cultural opportunities, historic preservation, and political initiatives. Not all of the entertaining done by the Kenners has a stated agenda. Yet, Corry and Kristin know that holiday parties and other just-for-fun gatherings help to bring people togeth-er and that such interactions help to build foundations for future collaborations among their com-munity-minded guests. Professionally, Kristin Kenner is a practicing dentist and a tireless advocate for dental health. She was the first woman president of the north Dakota State Dental Association and served on its board of trustees for seven years. She also works with Missions of Mercy to bring free dental clinics to children of the Spirit Lake Nation. Since 1984, Corry has served as vice president for Administrative Services at LRSC and also as assistant treasurer for the Community College Foundation. In this dual role, he is keenly aware of the importance of social gatherings to support fund-raising initiatives and advocacy work. He also knows that resources to support such goal-oriented events are hard limited by law and by tight budgets. On countless occasions, Corry and Kristin have opened their home for gatherings to sup-port college projects, and consequently they are aware of the expense involved. The Corry and Kristin Kenner Fun-Raising Endowment will support foundation-sponsored social events designed to raise resources or advocate for support for priority projects of Lake Region State College.
—“Crazy J” seems an unlikely nickname for a guy like Jim Kirk, a quiet, down-to-earth North Dakota farmer. Jim grew up on the family farm south of Crary, North Dako-ta, with four siblings. His parents, Laurence and Arlene, taught their children the value of hard work but also encouraged them to follow their passions. Jim’s talent for working with engines proved useful when he discovered the thrill of riding dirt bikes and snowmobiles … fast! A sand pit at the farm became a racetrack, and Jim’s fearless riding earned him the name Crazy J. After graduating from Crary High School, Jim enrolled in the Automotive Technology pro-gram at LRSC in 1976. He moved on to the small engines program at North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton and focused on the skills he needed to succeed in farming. After college, Jim worked in a small engine repair service in Devils Lake and then, in 1980, began farming full-time and continued to do so through 2002. One winter, Jim was looking for something fun to do and attended an LRSC basketball game. He quickly became a loyal Royals fan and in 1989 made a pact with himself to attend every game of the season. Fortunately, he loves to drive, and following the team provided a destination. One dark, cold night, the team bus broke down on its way back from Ironwood, Michigan. Jim came up behind it, took a look at the problem, and pulled out his coveralls and tool box, and fixed the problem. After that, the coaches decided Jim should be their driver, and for seventeen years, Jim volunteered as the team’s primary bus driver. He also provided mechanical advice and the “TLC”
that kept college buses looking good and running smoothly. When it came time to invest in a mo-tor coach, Jim stepped up and donated the first thousand dollars. Jim is impressed with the hard work and determination shown by student athletes who put in countless hours practicing and yet manage to keep up with their school work. He felt a named endowment, with preference given to female athletes, would be a nice way to continue to support the college and the student athletes who have given him so much enjoyment through the years.
—Harold Sager was a beloved member of the LRSC “family” for 10 years. He befriended students and offered a cheery greeting to all who passed while he was caring for his area of the campus. Sadly, his career at the college was inter-rupted by his final illness at the age of 83. Prior to the college, Harold worked the “night shift” at the Lake Region Lutheran Home. During the day he worked on the farm of Brad Horne, his brother-in-law. One or two jobs at a time wasn’t enough for Harold; he also cleaned at the Senior Citizens Center. Harold, known to family as “Bob,” was born March 17, 1928, in Rolla, North Dakota, the youngest of ten children of Clyde and Emma Sager. He received his education near St. John, North Dakota, and in 1942 moved with his family to a farm in Ramsey County. Harold married Carolyn Horner in 1959, and they made their home a farm near Starkweather, North Dakota. They farmed and ranched and raised their children, Richard and Wanda, until retiring in 1987. Harold served on the council for the Methodist Church in Starkweather. He was on the Hammer Township Board for over 25 years. He loved to help around the farm and supported his grand-daughter’s interest in horses. It was important to him to be in the audience for every school, sport-ing activity, or special event in which his grandchildren participated. The Harold “Bob” Sager scholarship was established by his son, Richard Sager, and family as a tribute to a humble man who lived an exemplary life. The scholarship will be awarded annually to an LRSC student athlete.
—With this endowment, Wilton and Shirley Webster and their family seek to create a lasting legacy that reflects their strong belief in the value of education. The Webster family has been in the Devils Lake community since 1883. Wilton, born in 1930, was raised on a farm east of Churchs Ferry, North Dakota. Shirley Ann Tollefson was born in 1932 and raised on a farm southwest of Webster, North Dakota. In 1954, after one year at the University of North Dakota and service in the U.S. Air Force, Wilton returned to carry on the family farming operation. That year, he married Shirley who had recently graduated as a registered nurse from the Deaconess School of Nursing in Grand Forks. Together, they raised one daughter, Kay, and four sons, Daniel, Robert, Craig, and Paul. A fifth son, David, died in infancy. All five children attended college. Daniel returned to the farming op-eration while the others pursued successful career paths. Wilton was very active in community affairs, serving on for the Devils Lake Junior College Development Board, Ramsey County ASCS, Lake Region Credit Union, Devils Lake Farmers Union, Coulee Township board of supervisors, Churchs Ferry Men’s Club, and the Masonic Lodge. He was a life member of the VFW. Shirley was also active in the community, belonging to many clubs over the years. She taught piano and became a certified dental assistant. Wilton and Shirley and their family were all active members of Zion Lutheran Church. The family believe that hard-working North Dakota students are deserving of scholarships to help make their dreams come true. With this endowment, they honor that commitment.

NOTE: The price paid for an item at the Key Event auction is welcome support for Lake Region State College and its foundation. Because the “winning” bidder receives “goods” in exchange for cash, an auction purchase is not considered a gift by the IRS, unless the price paid exceeds the market value for the item. When something “sells high” (above the market value established by the individual who donated the item) we rejoice, and we know that the record for that item will show gift credit for two people—1) the person who provided the item will receive credit for its market value, and 2) the purchaser will receive credit for dollars paid beyond the pre-set market value. The foundation also welcomes information about participants in group purchases which allows us to appropriately credit all who support the college by purchasing auction items. Foundation staff will be happy to provide information about the market value of items you purchase at the Opportunities Auction. Thank you!
ometimes saying“Thank You” just isn’t
big enough to express appreciation for an extraordinary contribution. For 18 years, Carol Leevers has invested her time and talents, leading a crew of 30+ volunteers to carry out one successful Key Event after another. The first year of her involvement, the Key Event raised $6,000. Proceeds grew larger each year, to reach a cu-mulative total of more than $760,000, to date. Carol has thoughtfully tailored each event to match the personality of our community and has kept it fresh through constant innovation. Year after year, the Key Event has proven that a small, rural community with a big heart (and a good leader) can mount an ex-
emplary fund-raising event. Last summer, we noticed a call for stories about volunteers who go above and beyond for their local community colleges. The Council for Resource Development (CRD), an affiliate council of the American Association of Com-munity Colleges (AACC), asked its member
colleges to nominate individuals for the Campus
Impact Award for Fundraising Volunteer.
We submitted a story about the growth of the Key Event and Carol’s pivotal role in its
evolution. To our delight, Carol was selected and will receive the award at the National CRD Convention in Washington DC on November 10, 2012. She will be the single recipient from the association representing nearly 1,200 two-year, associate degree-granting institutions and more than 13 million students. We thought this evening was an appropriate time to announce this impressive national award. To commemorate the
achievement, we have invented a special “Keys
to Opportunities Award” to honor Carol’s work
for our foundation and our college. The plaque contains a decorative set of keys and a crystal-doorknob. It represents Carol’s tireless work to raise funds to provide keys to opportunities for students and help them open doors to bright futures. Thank you, Carol!
