Pastor Scott’s Issue: Earthquake!
I felt the earth…move…under my feet…literally. While vacationing in Las Vegas, Nevada last month the
family was gathered around the breakfast table when someone complained that my leg shaking was shaking
the table. Then my mother became dizzy and thought she was having a stroke. Then we noticed the hanging
dining room light was swaying…EARTHQUAKE!
If you have never experienced an earthquake it is quite unnerving. My first experience of an earthquake was
in the mid 1980’s in Anaheim…6.2 magnitude. God’s great sense of humor had me on the 7th
floor of a
hotel high-rise in the shower at the time. My initial thought that the rumble was the sound of a large 18-
wheeler soon turned to the realization that this was an earthquake. This realization came because I needed to
brace myself against the shower wall to keep from falling down. Unnerving to say the least.
I hope you never have to experience a life-threatening event, but many of you have: cancer diagnosis,
chronic untreatable disease, tornado, earthquake. And these events are not limited to physical events. Life as
we know it can become shattered due to family turmoil, loss of job, friend abandonment, a failed test and
the list goes on and on. Each of these situations leaves us feeling helpless. We are literally at the mercy of
God.
And during those times when we are not unnerved by our circumstances we can be deceived that we are in
control: that our tomorrow on this earth is assured and our plans for today will all fall in place and that
nothing untoward will come our way. When in actuality we are standing on a proverbially fault line in our
life where at any moment the ground upon which we stand can fail us.
Seven stories up, holding on to shower walls, my physical world was rocked but my spiritual world became
so very real. I was at peace. I was making survival plans should I survive the potential of the building
collapsing…but my spiritual plans were already set. I knew I would see the Lord should my physical world
come to an end. I knew that God had called me by name before the world was created. I knew that God was
there in the midst of the earthquake.
May we draw near to the Lord in the midst of our earthquakes. May we draw near to the Lord in the absence
of calamities. May we know that peace that passes understanding: that peace that pervades even the most
mightiest of earthquakes in our lives…that peace that comes from knowing our Lord and Savior, Jesus!
Peace,
Pastor Scott

Boulder Junction Community Parade
We had a great time decorating our “Fishers of Men” boat for the July 4th Independence Day Parade!
Special thanks to Ken and Karshan Carlson for allowing us to use their boat, and hosting the decorating and
dinner party afterwards. Thanks to Jim Stober for being our responsible driver with a really sweet truck,
and to Luella Doss for the incredible supply of decorations. Also to the kids, parents, and helpers who
pitched in to make this day memorable. Many came together to celebrate our freedoms in America, but also
our Liberty and Grace through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
John 8 (NKJV) 36 “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed!”
Boys to Christian Men – Flying Day!
They did it! The boys and men collaborated with enough friends and community members to
complete enough work, earning enough money to spend a day “in the air.” CCBJ is blessed to have
multiple current and former pilots in the congregation, and put together an incredible opportuntiy for the
boys. They were taught the fundamentals of airplane controls and functions, and the basic nature of flight.
Several planes were on site to discuss differences and appreciate the history and diversity of aircraft. But as
you might guess, the highlight was flying. For most, this was their first time in the air and they were even
allowed to fly the plane. Their instructor was amazing and thrilled the boys to no end. One of them said he
felt like an eagle…just soaring through the sky looking down on our magnificent Wisconsin Northwoods!
It reminded me of a beautiful chorus which reflects Isaiah 40:31.
They that wait upon the Lord, shall renew their strength.
They shall mount up with wings like eagles.
They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint.
Teach me Lord, teach me Lord, to wait!
