Issue Number 3, Christmas 2016

Welcome to the third edition of

Buzz on the Bridge!

The past three months have been very busy again for CBS, with a number of client/business-supporting events and functions taking place (see stories inside). 2017 will also be a time of considerable change, when the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is rolled out to young people and adults, bringing with it individualized funding with a focus on choice and control for people with a disability. The NDIS will also provide new and exciting opportunities for both NDIS participants and disability support providers. CBS is an NDIS-registered provider of supports and we are looking forward to proactively responding to these changes; we hosted an NDIS information session for Participants, Parents and Carers on 6 October and also held a follow-up session re NDIS Pre-Planning on 22 November.

2016 Disability, Ageing and Lifestyle Expo

CBS was proud to be associated with this year’s Disability, Ageing & Lifestyle Expo, which was held on Friday 23rd September in the Adelaide Show-ground’s Goyder Pavilion. It was a great day out for CBS staff from our Jobnet, Community Concierge and Day Options teams, and it was also the first time that we used our great new 20th Birthday cloth display banner! While the Expo was not as well-attended as in previous years, we still had a lot of enquiries, and we are grateful to everyone who helped to set up, man and dismantle the booth.

CBS Moonlight Speakers and MCs Group

CBS recently launched a new initiative for our clients called CBS Moonlight Speakers and MCs. This is a group of clients who have leadership skills in public speaking who advocate for people with a disability. Two of these inspirational speakers, James and Jesse, were invited to visit Parliament House on 15 September by Kelly Vincent MLC as a thank-you for speaking at a recent Dignity for Disability (D4D) luncheon. They were accompanied by CBS repre-sentatives Freddie Brincat OAM, Darren and Abby.

Adelaide Oval Tour a Great Success Herald Mansoori Employment Officer, City Office

On 31st August, a group comprising 16 CBS staff, clients and friends from five different CBS metro sites enjoyed a tour of the Adelaide Oval. The group learnt a bit about the development of the new oval and the history surrounding the entire complex before being split into two and shown around the oval. Everyone really enjoyed seeing the Sir Donald Bradman collection, the grandstand, the heritage-listed scoreboard, team, training and SACA training room/lockers, media rooms, bars and many other exciting facilities.

One real highlight was when they enjoyed the experience of hearing a recording of cheering crowds playing through speakers in the walls as the party walked out onto the grounds from the train-ing rooms! Everyone really enjoyed the tour, some friendships were made, and the participants appreciated the efforts of the CBS team. Thank you to all who attended on the day.

Embrace Film Night, Murray Bridge Tim Wiseman Regional Coordinator, Riverland & Murraylands

CBS and Australia’s youth mental health initiative headspace ran an Embrace movie night on 27th September, with a focus on positive self-image. It was a great success, with more than 230 tickets being sold, which was almost a sell-out. Guest Speaker Alison Barrett from Girlspo+ also spoke about her experience with her own self-image, eating disorder and battle with depression.

CBS in the Community

DES Business Reallocation Review

We were very pleased to see all of our offices succeeding in maintaining their current business shares after the recent Disability Employment Services Business Reallocation Review. Congratulations to everyone involved!

CBS has taken pleasure in being involved with a number of community-oriented activities during the past three months. Our country sites in particular were involved in several important events:

Port Augusta

Several young men attended and received free haircuts and grooming bags, complet-ed some activities and heard from GP Dr Andy Killcross about the importance of hygiene for Men’s Grooming Day.

An event called Talk and Tapas was held on 4 November at Ian’s Western Hotel. It hosted a range of local business and community leaders who were interested in supporting a diverse workforce. There was a focus on free supports available to local employers for staff who are already employed.

An Abilities Expo was run at Gladstone Square on 14 October. The event was organised by the Disabilities Interagency Group.

Whyalla Pride in the Park is an annual event held

by Advancing Whyalla, sponsored by Whyalla Council as part of Pride Week, on 22 October. The event showcased ‘the pride of Whyalla’ and CBS had a stall to provide information to attendees.

The Mental Health Week Expo, held on 4 October, was organised by the Depart-ment of Rural Health. Each stall holder was asked to provide an engaging activity for participants that promoted mental health, and our Whyalla staff made worry beads, key rings and bracelets. Overall the day went well, and some good conversations were had with participants. Many people were also provided with information about CBS, and a direct registration was also secured from this Expo.

The All-Inclusive Expo 2016 event was held at Mount Laura Homestead on 3 November. This was established by our Whyalla Jobnet Coordinator, Courtney Beer, along with a Disability Support Services steering committee who believed there was a need for a community event to showcase the local services and supports in Whyalla. The stall holders for the event included local employment and education providers, community service organisations and support services, local employers and social groups. Some mini-workshops were also organised to provide attendees with skills for interviews, resume writing and effective communica-tion. It was a very worthwhile event which really helped to promote Whyalla’s many valuable support services.
