Community and Economic Profiles for
Michigan’s Upper PeninsulaFeaturing data from 2012-2013
An Economic Snapshot: Demographics, Labor Force, Major Employers, Government,
Community Development and More
About this Directory
This directory, “Community and Economic Profiles for Michigan’s Upper Peninsula”, lists 2012 and 2013 county data for each of the fifteen counties of the U.P. Much of the data in the directory was retrieved from the U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, State of Michigan De-partment of Technology, Management and Budget. Employment data was collected by Eastern Upper Peninsula Planning and Development, Central Upper Peninsula Planning and Development, Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region and Michigan Works!
This data can be utilized to monitor local economic conditions and trends, provide economic profiles for new, existing and prospective businesses, and identify new con-sumption, savings, investment and philanthropic opportunities.
2012 and 2013 data is featured here because the 2014 federal data is not finalized until June of 2014.
The Researchers
Tawni Hunt Ferrarini, Ph.D., Sam M. Cohodas Professor at Northern Michigan Uni-versity (NMU), prepared this work in tandem with the Eastern Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region, Central Upper Peninsula Planning and Develop-ment and Western Upper Peninsula Planning Region.
Special thanks to Upper Peninsula Economic Development Alliance for initially launching and providing administrative support of this long standing project.
Recognition goes out to Markus Cook (NMU Economics, May 2013) and Laura Lep-panen (NMU Economics, May 2013) and Kevin Flohe (NMU Economics, May 2014 - Expected) for their contributions.

Gogebic County, MIGogebic County is Upper Michigan’s most western county, bordering Wisconsin and Lake Superior. Its economy is com-prised of three dominant sectors: diverse industries, forest products and tourism. Non-forest related industries include precision tool making, plastic injection molding, industrial sewing operations and electronic assembly. Forest related industries include logging, sawmills and dimension mills with regional, national and international markets. The forest provides recreation and tourism activities including mountain biking, snowmobiling, downhill and cross country trails, hiking and camping. Ottawa National Forest, including Sylvania Wilderness Area, is an inviting recreation area. The tourism industry focuses on a wealth of natural resources located in the county. Lake Superior, trout streams, waterfalls and inland lakes including Lake Gogebic draw fair weather visitors, while four alpine ski hills/resorts in the county and miles of ski and snowmobile trails offer winter activities.

Keweenaw County, MIKeweenaw County, pronounced KEY-wah-nah, is an Ojibway word that means “the crossing place” or “land crossing between two bodies of water.” The least populated county in Michigan, Keweenaw is home to proud descendants of miners who each have a story to tell of the “Copper Country.” The county is home to diverse landscape - from singing sand beaches to the oldest known lava formations on earth. An all-encompassing view shows up to 900 foot peaks, vast strands of forest, and numerous lakes. This area hosts world-class trails, waterways, natural views, and endless shorelines and relatively quick access to Isle Royale.
