For many college students, the experience of going to a universi-ty is all about trying new things and expanding one’s own life perspective. This can translate to many things within the context of academic life including stu-dent organizations, campus ac-tivities, opportunities for commu-nity involvement & studying abroad, as well as many other events that encompass living on your own for the first time. Most students are new to living on their own and this presents many challenges. But the sad reality is that trying new things and ex-panding one’s own life perspec-tive for the typical college stu-dent means consuming sub-stances. Alcohol is obviously the most prevalent for college students to consume, but drugs

are unfortunately not far behind.

The area surrounding UTSA has grown exponentially, keeping up with the pace of the university and its desire to expand. This growth has brought so many new apartment complexes in the im-

mediate area for students to live in. With the rapid expansion of population in such a condensed area, many challenges arise to infrastructure—roads need to be expanded, city services need to be increased, and police & fire services have to keep up as well. Businesses see this growth as an opportunity to gain more share in the market. Unfortu-nately, drug dealers see it as a

market opportunity as well.

There has been a clear increase in drug activity surrounding the UTSA community and a clear in-crease in certain types of violent crimes. Some may argue that this is a coincidence, but regard-less of someone’s own interpre-tation of the increase in more vi-olent crimes surrounding the uni-versity, the evident drug activity plays a role. There have been numerous studies throughout the nation that show a clear con-nection to drugs and how they relate to an increase in crime. This increase in crime is by both drug users and dealers respec-

tively. The drug users tend to commit more crimes while on drugs due to the altered state of mind they experience, and to support their drug habit, while dealers commit crimes not only for normal business but also due to competing for territory, greed,

& control.

How does this relate to the UTSA community? The UTSA Police Department works closely with the San Antonio Police Depart-ment to help combat the drug problem that surrounds us. But the only way police can ever be successful is to gain assistance from the community. First, you must be aware of your surround-ings and who you live around. If you know of drug activity around your apartment, you can report it anonymously to UTSAPD through our silent witness pro-gram (www.utsa.edu/utsapd/forms/witness.cfm) or to SAPD through their Submit a Tip pro-gram (www.sanantonio.gov/

SAPD/SubmitaTip.aspx).

Why is it important to report drug activity? Simply put: you will contribute to reducing the crimes that go along with drug activity. There have been many instances over the last few years surrounding campus of shoot-

ings, armed robberies, home in-vasions, and burglaries to name a few. Many of these are directly related to drug dealers and drug users, but they can clearly have a negative affect on the commu-nity or end up inadvertently in-volving an innocent bystander. Also, there is recent activity showing drug dealers are using the pill as a means to get other drugs, like Meth, introduced into the college environment. Many students abuse prescription pills to help them study, but now, you may not know what you are in-

gesting...

Take a stand against drugs and choose not to use. Help the po-lice combat drug usage and drug dealing by reporting information. Reporting anonymously is the safest route, but you can always call the UTSA Police Dept. for any situation you may have con-cerns about to talk with an of-

ficer.

Local communities join forces with local law enforcement during

a time when police budget cuts are substantial. Officially recog-

nized as Crime Prevention Month, October is the month when the

National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) recognizes those who

work tirelessly all year to prevent crime and highlights new tips

and resources for effective crime prevention in the future.

“Crime Prevention Month is a time to reinforce the importance of

community safety,” said NCPC President and CEO Ann M.

Harkins. “Community safety and effective crime prevention will

always begin with active partnerships between community mem-

bers and local law enforcement.”
