Your Life Purpose Date: Tuesday, February 15 Time: Apéro: 18:30‐19:00 Main meeting: 19:00‐21:00 Place: Centrepoint, Im Lohnhof 8, Basel Cost: Free for PWG members, CHF 15 for non‐members
Who are you? What are you here for? What is important to you? What values guide you? What do you want to be remembered for?
An essential human capacity is our conscious‐ness of ourselves, which enables us to reflect on our lives and the meaning of our existence. The knowledge of our mortality defines us as moving through time from birth to death, giv‐ing each moment its singularity and inviting us to determine actively what we want to do and become within this arc of our existence.
We are often too caught up in day‐to‐day ac‐tivities to step back and consider our life pur‐pose, and run the risk of being defined by out‐side circumstances, leaving us feeling dissatis‐fied and empty. Aligning with our purpose brings us meaning, energy, and fulfilment.
This interactive evening program will provide you the opportunity to reflect on and find an‐swers to these essential questions of identity, values ,and purpose. Please bring along paper and pen to take notes for yourself.
Kathy Hartmann‐Campbell's professional life is dedicated to helping people live more pur‐poseful and fulfilling lives. The consulting busi‐ness she started over 20 years ago works with private and corporate clients providing coach‐ing, facilitation and training in all aspects of communication and personal development.

Opportunities to support PWG
If you: • Are interested in learning new skills • Want to use your best skills even more • Want to be part of a dynamic group of women • Have ideas for PWG The following opportunities are available to you:
• The Newsletter team needs one more editor to edit and lay out newsletter contributions (≈ 8 hrs/month, mostly towards the end of the month but on your own time)
• Public Relations: We are looking for someone with a marketing background to help us promote PWG in the wider Basel community. Creating ideas and checking for opportunities will be the most important tasks! You do not have to attend all committee meetings—maybe be a consultant to the committee. Any work done will be on your own time, and how much is up to you. The im‐plementation of your ideas is the responsibility of the committee as a whole, not yours! (Or we could perhaps create small projects for other PWG members).
Sounds like something you would like to do? If you are in‐terested or would like more information, contact Ansophie at chair@pwg‐basel.ch or Dawn at vice‐chair@pwg‐basel.ch .

NEXT MEETING — Getting your foot in the door
Date: Monday, February 28
Time: From 7pm at Centrepoint
This topic is all about making that initial contact with a client or‐ganization, or group who could help to promote your business. It is an area which quite often terrifies new business people, who might be super skilled in their area of expertise, but a little unconfident at first at “selling”. We’ll explore the practicalities as well as some confidence boosting tricks, and see what works for the people in the room. You’ll leave with many ideas to pursue, as well as the motivation to go and get your foot in the door!
If you have a particular (positive) experience or something we can learn from in this area, please contact us on women‐entrepreneurs@pwg‐basel.ch and we will see how we can build this into the programme.
The Women Entrepreneurs group welcomes women with their own businesses AND women who are considering the idea. We have a range of businesses represented, some large and some very small – some long established and others only just starting up. We’re here to support each other, share what works, and help each other build our businesses here. And, most importantly, to have fun while we’re doing it!
MEETING REVIEW — January meeting We had a great turnout for the first Women Entrepreneurs meet‐ing of the New Year, including several women attending for the first time. The session was both lively and relaxing, and certainly got everyone talking.
Individual Business Highlights of 2010 Within the group, we were delighted to celebrate exciting business highlights, such as buying a shop, becoming an Amazon number 1 author, built a new website, launched a new practice, hit rhythms of running a business, receiving a commission to paint portraits, winning business with a major company, learning German, recog‐nizing skills, taking a decision to set up in business, and, at least four in the group had both set up their new business and had their first paying clients in 2010.
Goals for 2011 Kirstin proposed a new way of looking at Goals for Women Entre‐preneurs. Instead of using the acronym SMART (specific, measur‐able, achievable, realistic, time‐related), Kirstin suggested that, as entrepreneurs, we were free to define a more exciting and inspir‐ing kind of goal for ourselves. Limiting ourselves to SMART goals might constrain our thinking, and limit the options we explore for ourselves and our business, especially in the early days, where we may follow a range of opportunities before settling into a clear niche or way of working.
Clearly within our NICE and EASY goals (email Kirstin on
PWG Women Entrepreneurs
[email protected] to find out what a NICE and EASY goal is!), there will be some hard figures emerging, but it is rarely the hard figure that gets us out of bed in the morning. As entrepre‐neurs we need to feel energized by our goals, feeling we can’t wait to, not we have to, achieve our goals!
So, in the context of a NICE and EASY goal, here are a few of ours:
Selected Goals of Women Entrepreneurs
Make Swiss Candles a household name (www.swiss‐candles.com – you saw it here first!)
Launch Yoga Dance in Basel
Reach out to kids
Coach in English
Work with groups
Be 100% congruent ‐ inside matches out
Sing!
Reach more people with my writing
Weekend Garden Party in July (painting, ceramics, music – www.schoeni‐sache.ch)
Of course, we all want to grow our business ,and over the next few sessions (Feb 28th, March 28th, May 2nd) will be working together on the following topics – Getting your foot in the door, Leveraging your prospects, and Closing the deal.
The second half of the meeting gave an opportunity to one of our Women Entrepreneurs the chance to lead a professional hypno‐therapy session with our large group. Gail Imrie, who set up Odys‐sey Therapies last year, and who has been a regular attendee of our group, offered to run a short session in the context of helping
us achieve our goals. The idea behind it was to both instill a more positive mindset overall, and to remove negative thought patterns.
The pace of the meeting slowed and we all slid into a relaxing trance state where Gail guided us through a lesson in how to do self‐hypnosis. Accompanied by the Jazz practice from above, we let our bodies and minds relax and opened our minds to some new possibilities. After being brought round, there were many ques‐tions about this technique. Gail explained the various uses of hyp‐notherapy, from curing phobias, changing habits, to managing stress, handling pain, replacing negative thought patterns with positive ones, and so on.
After the formal part of the meeting was over, we mingled and lingered over drinks and snacks, exchanging business cards, ideas and plans for the year ahead. As usual, there was the chance to renew old acquaintance and make new connections.
Many thanks to Gail Imrie for preparing and delivering this excel‐lent, professional session.

An old dog is learning new (Winter) tricks
By Shalini Trefzer
Minus 11 degrees Celsius read the thermometer inside the car on Dec 27 or Dec 28, 2008 and this was enough reason for me to refuse to get out of the car and explore Grindel‐wald. Winter had been a entirely foreign concept for me until that time two years and two months ago when we moved from the Bay Area to Dani's native Basel. I spent that whole first winter being, in turns, bewildered and terrified by the cold.
Today is January 23, 2011 and I described how ‐11oC feels in my own words as ‘a temperature at which the inside of your backpack, left in your car parked outdoors, feels like the in‐side of your fridge’ because I had just spent two mornings among the elements, along a forest path, working im‐mensely hard at my first cross country ski lesson! "You've come a long way, baby!", "Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights", "who's the hottest girl in the world, my Desi girl", these three lyric lines played in a repeating loop in my head even as I toppled over into the white for the fifth time on that first morning. This time, while just standing listening to the instructor! That seemed like a long‐ago memory to‐day as I flew down a Loipe, or cross‐country ski trail and screamed at the German classmate standing plop in the mid‐dle of the loipe and taking his wife's picture, "Move. MOVE,
Members Forum
MOVE! I'm gonna crash into you!" He moved off the Loipe. Slowly. That kinda brought home the fact that even if I felt like I was "flying", the slope itself was probably just a gentle rolling patch on a gentle, blue, beginner course. Still, I flew out of my fear of the cold, the snow, skis, and winter in gen‐eral and that, baby, is a feeling of pure bliss.
The Loipe was at a German resort called Notschrei, conven‐iently located 75 minutes or so from Basel on a route that I found surprisingly easy to drive on my own today, based on the memory of the route from yesterday when nearly all the Trefzers accompanied a nervous novice to her first cross‐country ski lesson! In spite of the relative simplicity of the drive though Zell, a town in the Wiesental area of Germany along the river Wiese (as a side note, my father‐in‐law, Mani mentioned yesterday that my husband, Dani's, Trefzer grand‐dad moved from this town to Basel a long, long time ago), to Todtnau and then turning toward Freiburg and up the mountain to the resort...despite the simple route, I was nervous as heck on Saturday morning. Firstly, we returned to a winter that was possibly warmer than the Bay Area was in the first week of January! That meant all the snow was fast melting in the 14 and 15oC "heat". This went on until Tuesday of last week or so by when I had booked my class and was chewing my nails in frustration. We were actually relieved when it finally started snowing on Tuesday night, go figure. Secondly (most crucially), I fell sick Sunday‐Wednesday and slowly recovered only by Thursday evening.
I didn’t know at the start of the week whether I would have to cancel thanks to being quite ill—heavy cough, cold, snif‐fles, the whole program. Then, when I was fairly certain I would be healthy enough to go, I got this email to meet the instructor in some location besides the resort and I couldn't figure it out and my paranoia of new places returned full force until Mani talked to the instructor and assured me that he knew where to go. Bless him. Then came fear of the snow, which thankfully was not even palpable, worried as I had been about the logistics. Dani and Mani took Asha sled‐ding that first morning as I went on to the next mountain over with a group of 7 and proceeded to lock on the skis.
Cross‐county skiing seems easy when you look at someone gliding along a loipe. But, on that first day, being unaccus‐tomed to skis and not able to stop them from sliding, I fell all over the place, even while just standing! I didn't bother checking, but I suspect my backside is nicely destroyed from all the hard landings! It certainly feels like it. Nonetheless, I finished all the class tasks, albeit with crashes along the way. Today, we started working on using our upper leg strength to move ourselves in a glide and moving the arms as if we had the ski poles, which we had discarded for this exercise. The skis are no wider than the bottom of the light‐weight shoe and broad tipped at the upturned ends. The instructor stressed on the importance of the ski poles as being the most critical component to learning this sport. I hated mine and worked entirely without them today and
sailed through the class, barely falling, just once when going downhill. I don't know what that means for my future life as a recreational cross‐country skier, but for the moment, I was perfectly happy to get rid of the cumbersome ski poles.
And, several hours later, after I had changed myself while parked in front of the medical tent—using a baby towel be‐tween the visors as a privacy screen—I drove home with the heat up to 25oC in the car and my seat heater on max, a hot drink in the thermos which my friend, Annette, had sug‐gested last week as a nice after‐treat and, with the card of a classmate who wanted to practice with me (what an ego booster, she was good and she wanted to team up with the rookie!). But it wasn't until I found myself back home in a nice, hot bath with my three year old, Asha, leaning over to "wash" all the sore spots so "it's better, mama" and Dani grinning at my adventures, that I decided that my backside be darned, those loipes are going to see me again. In two weeks!
Who says you cant teach an old dog new (Winter) tricks, anyway?!
Viel Spass (enjoy!) Liebe Fruende (Friends!)

THE MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS
Giving children a chance to live? By Inge Djouad
REDUCE CHILD MORTALITY
Find out about Millennium Development Goal no. 4, “Lowering the mortality rate of children” worldwide and check how you might be part of this important endeavor initiated by the United Nations.
As you know from our previous newsletters, PWG is collaborating with the CMDG (Centre for the Millennium Development Goals) on the MDGs we have started to introduce to you one by one.
Goal no. 4 revolves around a particularly sensitive issue, as it speaks about dying children; however, in a good sense: stopping children’s mortality around the globe. The sub goal aims at cutting the death rate of children less than five years of age by two thirds between 1996 and 2015. According to the UN’s MDG monitor (http://www.un.org/millenniumgoals/childhealth.shtml):
“Child deaths are falling, but not quickly enough to reach the target. Revitalizing efforts against pneumonia and diarrhoea, while bolstering nutrition, could save millions of children. Recent success in controlling measles may be short‐lived if funding gaps are not bridged.”
The UN page also provides shocking quick facts. Can you imagine that the number of children who die before they reach their fifth birthday amounts to nine MILLION? Just a number, too abstract to relate to? Perhaps this video of street children can help to bring some life and reality to those figures: http://www.youtube.com/unitednations#p/c/8DEED622522E65D3
How can we as a group, or each one of us individually, contribute in making a difference? First of all, learn more about the program through the UN website. CDMG also provides information (http://www.cmdg.ch/de‐ch, in German) and welcomes interested individuals who want to get involved. The next step would be to “rouse to action, motivate, and get the word across”—an appeal by CDMG. As you know, “Constant dripping wears away the stone”
AGM, music, cheese, wine & good conversation
By Lara MacKenzie
The annual general meeting (AGM) event held on January 27, 2011, was both interactive and fun!
Ansophie gave us a quick review of our successes of 2010, of which there were many. Do you know that we are now 141 members from 27 countries? We are a truly international bunch! We also took care of some official business, such as electing a new committee.
Then, Dawn led us through a short interactive workshop based on the SOARR* principle where WE COULD HAVE OUR SAY regarding the PWG activities for 2011 and beyond. So, for those of you who missed it…. we determined the fu‐ture of the PWG for you, so look out for the results.
Monika arranged a surprise for us in the form of Brigitte Buser who played two beautiful, haunting highland tunes on her bagpipes, all dressed‐up in her kilt. Brigitte owns the restaurant where the PWG Christmas party was held and established the Hausgauen Tatoo—a very friendly, talented lady.
We also collected he last few items for the time capsule (to be opened in 10 years time) and then we finally had a chance to network and catch up on each other’s lives during the Wine & Cheese Social….something we all do very well!
It was a good way to reminisce on 2010 and a thought‐provoking start to 2011!
*SOARR = Strengths, Opportunities, Aspirations, Re‐sources, Results
In this section we are celebrating any and all PWG‐related achievements, whether they are big or small, by PWG members, including achievements by the committee members.
Dawn for volunteering her apartment as venue for the committee workshop – at the last minute (literally!) and also leading the workshop. Much appreciated and a big Thank You!
Kirstin for typing up our workshop notes the same evening!
Also Thank you to Elizabeth, Inge, Cordelia, Monika, Susanne and Beata for being extremely flexible and ‘rerouting’ themselves for the workshop.
Lara McKenzie for writing the review of the AGM and Wine & Cheese social.
Shalini Trefzer, Jennifer Tiu Reiniger, and Kirstin Barton for sub‐mitting articles (and interesting ones at that!) to Communiqué.
Your input is welcome—let us know when you know of somebody who did something really well or successful. Send an email to newsletter@pwg‐basel.ch with details of the person and what they’ve done to deserve a star.
