Welcome to our latest edition of the ‘Communiqué’ from Archbishop Temple School.

Autumn 2016

A message from

the Headteacher Dear Parent/Carer,

This new school year has proved to be every

bit as busy as previous years at Archbishop

Temple School.

We’ve been delighted to welcome 157 new

pupils into Year 7 in September. We had an

incredible 805 applications for places in Year 7

and over 90 appeals. I am overwhelmed by the

confidence this shows in the school by

members of our community. The new pupils

have settled in very well, and feel like they’ve

been part of the Archbishop Temple family for

ever. We do wish them five happy and

successful years with us.

In addition to new pupils we’ve welcomed

several new teachers:

Ms Victoria Walsh – subject leader for

History

Ms Kirsten Ryder – ICT and Maths

Ms Jessica Cross – Chemistry

Ms Katy McKenna – PE and Science

Ms Debbie Walsh – Food Technology and

Textiles to cover Mrs Smith’s maternity

cover

We also have welcomed our new chaplain, Joe

Houghton, and Lisa McManus to be our events

and media officer.

We also wish to extend our congratulations to

Mrs Smith on the birth of her son, Austin, and

Mr Charlton whose partner had a little girl,

Nola, on 17th October.

On 9th September we welcomed Dr John

Sentamu, the Archbishop of York, to the school

and had a lovely

morning with him.

The visit focused on

Archbishop Temple School, St Vincent’s Road, Fulwood, Preston PR2 8RA

pupils who have completed the

Archbishop’s Youth Award and

our pupils were an absolute

credit to the school and

themselves. The Archbishop

and his team were very

impressed with the passion and

enthusiasm they used to speak

of the school and the impact

the award has had on them.

On 23rd September myself and

three colleagues travelled to

London to attend a reception at

the Terrace Pavilion at the

House of Commons. It followed

the publication of a series of

articles highlighting best

practice in secondary

education in the Parliamentary

Review. The Review featured a

three page spread on the

excellent work staff and pupils

do here at

Archbishop Temple School.

Copies of The Parliamentary

Review can be found in our

reception.

During this term I am working

at another school as Associate

Headteacher. I was asked by

advisers within the local

authority to provide support to

a struggling school in Burnley.

So along with several

members of staff at Archbishop

Temple we have been working

to share our excellent practice

with staff at this school. This

arrangement will continue to

Christmas. I am aware that

this reduces my time at

Archbishop Temple School, but

other members of the senior

leadership team are always

available if you need to contact

us.

We close this half term with

good news about more

accolades for the school. We

have been nominated for two

awards by Educate magazine,

a leading educational

publication in the North of

England. Mrs Cate Gardner

has been nominated for

“outstanding teaching in the

Arts” for her work in our superb

music department. The senior

leadership team has been

nominated for “leadership team

of the year”. We are due to

attend the awards ceremony in

Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral

in late November; I will let you

know the outcome.

As the days draw in and we

have darker mornings and

evening, can I please remind

parents to be careful when

driving along St Vincent’s

Road. The traffic situation is as

worrying as ever, and I would

ask all drivers to show p

articular consideration to

other road users when

dropping children off at school.

Please remember that not only

are parents from ATS doing the

school run, but also

parents of children at Corpus

Christi School and Preston’s

College. If necessary, please

give yourself a few extra

minutes and don’t be the cause

of an accident when so many

children are around.

However, as the seasons come

and go, it’s good to

remember that God remains

unchanged and unchanging.

As the Psalmist says “LORD,

You have been our

dwelling place in all

generations. Before the

mountains were brought

forth, or ever You had

formed the earth and the

world, even from

everlasting to everlasting,

You are God” (Psalm 90:1-

2).

I do wish you and your family a

good half term break, and wish

to end by thanking you for your

continued support of the

school.

With warm regards,

Mrs Gill Jackson

Headteacher

JOE, OUR CHAPLAIN, TALKS ABOUT MAKING A NEW START Starting fresh: Having only started working at Archbishop Temple this September I can empathise with the Y7’s who began at the same time. Everything is new. New teachers, new buildings, new classmates, new larger volumes of homework. It can be exhausting remembering names and faces and connecting the two together. Like many Year 7’s I still get lost trying to find my way around the school, it’s been nice to bump into lost Year 7’s in the corridor and be lost together. A new start whilst bringing many challenges is also a great opportunity. Old ways of doing things or patterns of behaviour can be left behind. You can begin again and present to the world the version of you that you’d like people to see. Having started a fresh before what makes me chuckle is that it’s remarkably difficult to change. A new place doesn’t really mean you’re a new person. Slowly but surely if you’re putting up a mask the real you always shines through, for good or ill. Which is why I’m comforted that Jesus knows what I’m like and still loves me enough to die for me.

Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. The great news for people trying to make a fresh start is that Jesus takes us as we are. No acting needed. As a school we take people as they are, ‘warts and all’ as the saying goes. Jesus has taken me like that and we want to reflect that here. Brilliantly though Jesus doesn’t want to leave us as we are. He longs for our good and good is to be become more like him. Ephesians 4:32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. As a school we take people as they are and seek for them to grow and develop. Just like Jesus has done for Christians. Jesus, wonderfully for me, takes people who get it wrong into his family by forgiving them and then helping them become like him. My prayer is that whether you’re starting fresh or just carrying on where you are, you might know Jesus love for you. Take care. Joe Houghton School Chaplain. _________________________ CHORLEY BUILDING SOCIETY We are pleased to announce that the schools’ partnership with Chorley Building Society continues into its third year. This collaboration provides the pupils with the

experience of managing their own finances, and will help them to develop their knowledge and skills in financial capability. Projects like this can only continue to thrive with the support from our parents in allowing pupils to operate their own building society account.

_________________________ ROYAL NORTHERN COLLEGE OF MUSIC MASTERCLASS

On Tuesday 13th September 2016 the Music Department welcomed Andy Stott, head of the popular performance course at the Royal Northern College of Music, to deliver a masterclass to five pupils. Pupils in years10 and 11, taking GCSE music, had the opportunity to watch this incredibly informative session. As well as offering invaluable advice to our young musicians he talked about music in higher education and took questions from the pupils. Mrs C. Gardner Head of Music

EURO LANGUAGES DAY AND DIA DE LA HISPANIDAD The Modern Foreign Languages Department have had an incredibly busy start to the new school year involving pupils and staff in lots of fun activities to promote a love of language learning.

French ladies and gentlemen, Tour de France cyclists, French and Spanish footballers and a Flamenco dancer sashayed around our corridors on the 26

th

September to celebrate the annual European Day of Languages. The celebration has been held in schools and colleges across Europe for the past fifteen years, to promote language learning and linguistic diversity. Staff and pupils at Archbishop Temple School dressed up and took part in a variety of activities organised by the Modern Foreign Languages Department including a Boules contest, snail tasting and in-

class quizzes. The French cafe proved incredibly popular with pupils sampling delicious French pastries and freshly cooked crêpes. As you can see from the photos our pupils, and staff, looked magnifique!

On Wednesday 12th October pupils took part in a range of fun activities to celebrate Dia de La Hispanidad. Dia de la Hispanidad is a festival celebrated across the Spanish speaking world to commemorate the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus in 1492. It is an annual national public holiday in Spain. The day began with a special assembly led by the Modern Foreign Languages Department. At break-time there was a "Desayuno español" in the canteen. The department were incredibly busy selling magdalenas

which are Spanish cupcakes. These tasty little cakes are sometimes eaten in Spain for breakfast. Pupils also snapped up slices of bizcocho de limon, a delicious lemon sponge prepared by Señora Jimenez from her grandmother's recipe, as well as Señora Bergon's pacaques. At lunchtime pupils were invited to watch Buscando a Nemo at lunchtime's Euroclub.

Keep a look out for our new website section dedicated to the Modern Foreign Languages Department, coming soon.

INSPIRATIONAL NEW

MFL BLOG

September 2016 saw the launch of the MFL blog, I Love Languages. Over the summer, past pupils have been compiling posts about how using a language has helped them in their chosen university courses, careers and travels. The stories they shared were nothing short of inspirational, their exciting adventures encompass a real range of careers from geological travels to Salar de Ayunar, the salt flats of Bolivia to applying for work with Médecins Sans Frontières, or working in the Chilean Embassy and the Europen Union to travelling the world with a Christian charity promoting books and literacy.

The first of our MFL superstars visited Year 9 classes this half term to speak to pupils about the opportuni-ties an MFL GCSE has creat-ed for them at Oxford and Cambridge and we look forward to welcoming lots more familiar faces over the

coming months. Parents of current pupils at Archbishop Temple School can check out this inspirational blog on Firefly. Mrs J. Cairns Second in MFL ________________________

BOWNESS FIELDWORK TRIP Year 9 soldiered on through one of the wettest days in September to collect primary data to aid them with their investigation into tourism in the Lake District. Well done!

A hundred geographers planned and conducted methods to gather data on land use, congestion, over-crowding and to gauge the environmental impacts of tourism in Bowness. The field visit allowed them to practice skills required at GCSE. The work they are now completing in class comprises of a

practice GCSE coursework, which the year group are excelling in! Well done, on behalf of the Geography Department! Mrs L. Gilmour Head of Humanities ________________________ STAFF FROM ATS SHORTLISTED FOR PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS

STAGE LIGHTING

WORKSHOP

The drama department have been very busy this term. In September Year 10 GCSE Drama students took part in a stage lighting workshop. This creative, practical session was led by John Watson a profes-sional lighting designer who has worked at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre, Birming-ham’s Repertory Theatre and across Europe. The pupils began the morning by building their own stage set. From this they learnt about the different types of stage lighting including floodlights, fresnels and spotlights. They were then shown how to use lighting creatively to induce a powerful mood and atmosphere on set. Miss D. Keller Head of Drama ________________________ SPECIAL EFFECTS MAKE-UP WORKSHOPS A series of Special Effects Make Up Workshops have also been taking place in the drama department this term. A group of ten Year 11 pupils were taught a variety of make-up techniques by Miss Keller, Head of Drama. They learned how to create visually stunning looks using stage make up. They were taught how to

transform a Year 9 pupil into an elderly person, using old age make up techniques and prosthetics as well as creating some realistic looking scars, bruises and blisters. Ellice Booth, who is studying Media Make-up as part of her degree at Salford University, very kindly brought in the prosthetics and a small group of Year 9 pupils were models.

The Year 11 pupils now have the essential skills to plan and design their own stage make-up looks for their GCSE Macbeth pieces that will take place in November. Miss D. Keller Head of Drama

COMPUTER SCIENCE CLUB PROVES POPULAR

It's great to see all the new Year 7's getting actively involved in school life. The Year 7 Computer Science Club has been incredibly popular this term. Pupils have been writing code and programming their Micro:bits (mini-computers) to play games, display text, use navigation skills and perform tasks on command. The pupils will soon move on coding Raspberry Pi apparatus! Ms K. Ryder ICT Teacher

Staff at Archbishop Temple School run a variety of clubs throughout and after the school day. An updated timetable of school clubs and extra-curricular activities is now online. You can also view the extra-curricular PE timetable online.

SPIRITUALITY DAY

For the fourth consecutive year, the Year 9 Spirituality Day has taken place on World Food Day. The focus of the day is to think about the needs of people locally and further afield who need help. During the day pupils traded trainers to appreciate the economic difficulties of many families living is less economically developed countries. They experienced Fairtrade food sampling and learned about how we can have a positive impact upon the lives of people we will never meet through our buying choices. Other activities included learning about Sustainable Development Goals and some fun activities in the Sports Hall that helped pupils to think about the hurdles that people surmount to get clean water. Just before lunch, the whole year group gathered together to hear a fantastic explanation

by Rev McConkey of the meaning of Holy Communion. Rev McConkey explained why different Christians use different names for this service. Maggie and Alex from the Salvation Army in Preston spent a little time seeing how some pupils were making vegetable soup in Food Tech before speaking to the year about how important the support we give is to those in need in Preston. Maggie reminded us that whenever we do something that helps another person we are doing 'Kingdom work'. This means that whenever we do something that God would be proud of us for, we are helping to make God's kingdom happen here on earth. The following Monday Maggie and Alex from the Salvation Army collected over 15 litres of fresh vegetable soup, prepared by the Year 9 pupils as part of Spirituality Day. Mrs F. Ashton Head of R.E.

SPORTING SUCCESS AT

ATS

It's great to hear about our sporting successes here at Archbishop Temple School. We're just a couple of months into the new school year and already we have been celebrating triumphant victories. The year 10 girl's netball team started the season with a flying start, with a 23-2 win against Fulwood Academy! Star player Daisy Walton took over centre court with very impressive movement and strong, precise passes. Everyone demonstrated an outstanding performance and the team dominated the game throughout. Super defending combined with incredible shooting saw us to victory, and a pleasing start to the season. Well done to: Daisy Walton, Davina Vadher, Jasmine Laker, Fiona Caudrelier, Elizabeth Wafer, Daria Lisowska, Gracie Gudgeon and Sasha St Valle Hoyle. By Davina Vadher, Year 10. The first year 9 netball match of the season was at home against Fulwood. We went in confidently, determined to start the season off with a strong win. Archbishop started with first centre pass, scoring six-teen goals in the first fifteen minutes of the game. There were strong interceptions from both Holly Salisbury and Cara Jones. After a quick team talk from Mrs Jones, Archbishop were back on excellent form. Fulwood scored just one goal in the second half. Shooters, Madeleine Murray and Marlie Barbour, went on to score a magnificent 36 goals in total! Overall, the match was an amazing start to the season

with a final score of 36-1, with the player of the match being Madeleine Murray. We will continue to work hard to ensure this is the beginning of many more wins-well done girls! By Madeleine Murray, Year 9 FOOTBALL NEWS THE YEAR 8 & 9 GIRLS WIN AGAIN IN THE NATIONAL CUP The Y8 and 9 girls won in the second round of the national cup away to Stanley, Southport. With the team missing some players through injury they stuck together and worked fantastically well to come out 4-2 winners. Archbishop Temple went 1-0 up through Lauren Tunstall be-fore Stanley got it back to 1- 1. Archbishop Temple then took a commanding lead through Lauren again, Freya Campbell and Menna Shirras. Stanley scored a break-away goal to complete the scoring at 4-2. Star performers on the day were Lauren Tunstall with a performance like Steven Gerrard in Istanbul 2005. She covered every bit of grass, scored winning headers, two goals and took part in some last ditch defending. Maddie Murray and Jess Jones were also strong in defence. Mr D. Taberner PE Department A busy night of football at Archbishop Temple School on 12th October saw three lower school games. The Year 7’s played in the

second round of the National Cup vs Blessed Trinity from Burnley. They dominated the game from start to finish eventually running out 5-1 winners. Goals came from Jake Forshaw and Isaac Mabaya. Jack Sheridan was again excellent in goal with Kieran Whitworth putting in a fine performance at full back. The Year 8's played Our Lady's managed by two Y11 students Luke Parker and Owen Davies. The newly formed management duo were fantastic and the team played fantastically well. The Y8's took an early lead and were pegged back just before half time. The game was evenly matched up until the last 5 minutes when going for the win Temple were caught out on the counter attack eventually losing the game. The Year 9’s also came up against a very strong Our Lady's team and unfortunately lost out however they showed commitment to keep working until the end with stand-out performances from Tom Douglas in goal and James Taylor in centre midfield. CPR TRAINING AT ATS

To mark ‘National Restart a Heart Day’, run by the British Heart Foundation, a group of pupils from across all years attended a training session after school on Tues 18th Oct. The group, using resources supplied by BHF, learnt how to administer CPR by following a video and having a go on their own manikin. The noise of clicks filled the hall as pupils realised how hard they would have to push in order give

meaningful CPR. They also moved on to how to deliver rescue breaths, although it took a bit of practice, everyone managed to get the manikin breathing, despite almost strangling the ‘casualty’ at times!

Every member of the group worked with effort and enthusiasm and Mrs Knight, Mrs Player and Madame Bergon all feel confident that if they collapsed in school this team of pupils would rush to their rescue! The team will continue their training and then Mrs Knight hopes to roll it out to many more pupils across school with the first group of pupils leading the training. It was a useful and enjoyable session and pupils left feeling empowered. Keep an eye out on the website for when the next training session will be held. All pupils are welcome to attend! Mrs C. Knight Second in English _________________________ YEAR 8 MICRO:BIT CLUB A group of Year 8 pupils have been having fun working as super inventors this half term. The pupils have been programming their Micro:bits, a pocket sized codeable computer from the BBC. The latest initiatives they have been involved in include taking part in a national food survey

using their Micro:bits and more recently creating their very own Micro:pets sporting colourful costumes!

Micro:bit club will continue into the new year. Miss H. Catterall Head of ICT

MEET OUR ICT ROBOT IN

THE MAKING!

This is the first glimpse of the

ICT robot being built.

Lenny is working towards getting our department robot working. We have some parts on order, these will work with the Arduino board to power the robot and then then it will be controlled using Scratch. Miss H. Catterall Head of ICT ________________________ NO PENS WEDNESDAY

Pupils and staff in Years 7, 8 and 9 relinquished their pens on Wednesday 5

th October

and got involved with a host of fun speaking and listening ac-tivities as part of No Pens Wednesday. Organised by The Communications Trust the day had been set up to promote communication skills in schools across the country. Since it started five years ago nearly 5,000 schools in the UK have taken part in the annual event. It was a great opportunity for teachers to plan some really engaging, fun and memorable learning to encourage our pupils to get talking. Across the school pupils got involved in lively debates on hot current affairs topics, took part in role plays and short pieces of

drama and created some delicious, healthy dishes. Pupils also really impressed their teachers with their independent research, group work and presentation skills. There were also a host of other activities taking place. In Mr Duggan’s Design Technology class the pupils created movable CAM models, Year 7 pupils in Mrs Hutchinson’s class were given the opportunity to become map detectives learning about new map symbols using Ordnance Survey maps and Year 9 pu-pils in Mr Baines’ art class got creative with Photo Shop to produce digital portraits. In Miss Cross’ Science class pupils were given a scientist to focus on. They then produced either a presentation, role play or visual to summarise their ideas on atomic theory. After that they discussed the limitations of each model and how all of the theories worked together to identify the structure of an atom. Year 7 pupils had a lot of fun listening to Spanish songs in Miss Jimenez’s classes. The pupils looked at phonics for Spanish sounds, following this they pronounced individual words and practised them. The next step was for the pupils to listen to the words in a Span-ish song. Then, once they had listened to the song once, they needed to say the word or join in with the singing, making sure they were pronouncing things correctly. Finally, pupils looked at the lyrics, with gaps and had to remember which words were missing. Communication and language skills are essential for child development and learning. Judging by the feedback from

teachers and pupils No Pens Wednesday had a positive and unforgettable impact on our pupils' education. Mrs K. Jones Literacy Coordinator & Head of PE

BAe STEM Roadshow Earlier this term all of Year 7 attended a STEM roadshow hosted by BAe Systems and the RAF/Royal Navy. The show was very entertaining and clearly demonstrated the connection between Science, Maths and Technology and how it is applied to industry. The STEM roadshow gave an amazing display of some of the core principles used in the field of engineering including Light and Sound. Waves were demonstrated using exciting experiments which gave many of the pupils in the audience hands-on experience. The show was entertaining and educational and tied in some of the latest technology used in engineering. Pupils came away filled with a desire to know more and many pupils stayed behind to ask questions to the presenters. We hope that this roadshow inspired pupils to be the engineers of tomorrow. Mr T. Duggan, Head of Technology & Mr R McGee, Head of Science
