It’s spring, here in Kentucky, and I have to say, there’s probably not a more gorgeous place to be in the world during this time of year. The grass is bright green, birds are singing, flowers are blooming, and more importantly, it’s Derby time!

As many of you know, the Kentucky Derby is one of the largest sporting events in the world. It attracts approximately 160,000 people for a two-minute horse race. The amazing thing about the Kentucky Derby isn’t just the two-minute race, but the three weeks of events that lead up to it.

This year, I was elected to the Board of Directors for the Kentucky Derby Festival, an organization that puts on approximately 72 events over the three weeks leading up to the Kentucky Derby. These events include Thunder Over Louisville, the largest annual firework display in the nation; The Great Steamboat Race, where the Belle of Cincinnati races the Belle of Louisville; a half-marathon and marathon; three different bike races; a balloon glow and a myriad of other events. As always, the HMS Global Maritime team gets involved in several of these events.

I’d like to thank Bob Herre and our entire legal team for working on the tow boats and barges for Thunder Over Louisville. Due to Bob’s expertise on the Louisville waterfront, he was able to secure six barges and four tow-boats, and save the Kentucky Derby Festival a substantial amount of money. Thanks to Bob and his team!

Also, to show our support of the bike riders in the Tour de Lou, HMSGM sponsored our first cow-bell and horn cheering team. This was great because it wasn’t only HMSGM team members that attended, but also our joint venture partners, Infinite Solutions and Harding Schmanski and their teams. There was a prize for the best costume, which was won by Brianne in our HR Department in New Albany. I’m sure that you will get a kick out of the picture above -- that’s “the King” standing next to her!

There will also be about 50 of us onboard the Belle of Cincinnati for The Great Steamboat Race. This event began with the Delta Queen racing the Belle of Louisville. Since the Delta Queen is no longer in operation, the Belle of Louisville now races the Belle of Cincinnati. While it’s not a true steamboat race any longer, it’s still a great boat race and a great time. Our entire team always has fun coming out to share the day with our friends at B and B Riverboats and enjoying the scenery, as well as the race.

Anytime any of our team members are in town for the Kentucky Derby, or any of the events leading up to it, we look forward to hosting you, as I know you will have a great time! For those of you betting on the race, my suggestion is to bet on the gray horse – although that’s not much help for this year’s race with six gray horses in the running.

HMS Ferries Forms Service Excellence CadreCORE VALUES: Service Excellence, Safety FirstFollowing the success of the Safety Cadre to foster and maintain a safety culture within HMS Ferries, we have formed a Service Excellence Cadre to help foster development of a service excellence culture throughout the division. Comprised of a team of personnel from several sites who are interested in this initiative, the Cadre developed the following mission statement: “To help develop and support the most respectful and professional team in the maritime industry.” The Cadre further stated that, “By learning from each other and leading by example, we will strive to go above and beyond to help our entire HMS Ferries team provide our customers a great first impression and positive experience while aboard our vessels. In addition, we will hold our entire HMS Ferries team accountable to the highest Service Excellence standard and strive to provide conflict management tools that offer a balanced and consistent approach consistent with our Core Values.” Similar to the American Queen Steamboat Company’s “STEAM” initiative, one of the Cadre’s first priorities is to develop the structure of the Service Excellence program. This bottom-up approach will ensure that our team members that interact with customers on a daily basis have a strong and influential voice in the development of the program.

Our Service Excellence Cadre is comprised of:• Alexsandra Armata – St. Johns River Ferry• Jennifer Larison – Mobile Bay Ferry• Vondell McGraw – Gees Bend Ferry• Brandon Burton – Governors Island Ferry• Nicole Schwartz – Pierce County Ferry• Natosha Douglas – Oklahoma River Cruises• Joe Asabedo (Facilitator) - Oklahoma River Cruises• Matthew Miller (Facilitator) – Bainbridge Office• Christina Price (Facilitator) – Corporate Office

We look forward to the great work this team will accomplish during the coming months.

SAFETY NOTICE: A Safety Cadre member recently provided information that one of our vessels experienced a “flash flame” when a crewmember used a flammable cleaner on a hot, main diesel engine while underway. Fortunately, the crewmember was not injured and there was no damage to property. However, this “flash flame” could have easily resulted in a much more dangerous situation. Upon notification, the General Manager immediately directed removal of all liquids/solvents/cleaners not on the MSDS list, and for flammables to be stored appropriately. In addition, all hands training was conducted on the importance of not working on hot, active machinery and the importance of reading the label of cleaners/solvents and liquids prior to use.

The following are the lessons learned from this incident:• A periodic audit of MSDS’s is important to ensure only approved flammable cleaners/solvents/liquids are

onboard.• The Master needs to understand his/her responsibility to immediately investigate and report incidents of

fire, smoke, flooding, or other similar occurrences onboard. • The crew needs to understand the importance of communicating with the Master prior to conducting any

type of work in the engine room. • Never work on, or clean, a hot or active piece of machinery.

Thanks to our Safety Cadre, we continue to share our lessons learned and improve the overall safety of our Division.

HMS Ferries congratulates all of our shipmates for their achievements throughout the year. We would like to send special congratulations to the following shipmates for their hard work and achievement.

Gary Kilcrease Gees Bend Ferry After 3 years of service with HMS Ferries and 21 years of military service, Gary is permanently retiring. He has been a vital member of the Gees Bend team, and volunteered to fill personnel gaps aboard the Fort Morgan when needed. He also helped with start up on the American Empress. Gary will be greatly missed by his coworkers and our customers. We wish him all the best!

Emily Burt Pierce County Ferry Originally hired as a Ticket Agent in 2007, Emily recently completed her deckhand qualification and is currently making great progress on her senior deckhand qualification, The ticket agents are not required to qualify as crew, but are encouraged to do so as a way to step outside their comfort zone and learn something new and rewarding. Emily as a qualified deckhand and, once fully qualified as senior deckhand, becomes a force multiplier.

Barry Masterson St. Johns River Ferry As a Senior Deckhand aboard the Coursen and Master aboard the Sundance, Barry is cited for adhering to our Core Values and Code of Conduct, his outstanding work ethic and overall Safety Awareness.

Daniel Seyster and Michael Miller of the Newport, RI site will be celebrating 25-year anniversaries with the company this May. Collin Hockenbury, Human Resources Intern at the New Albany, IN offices, spoke with both of them to get their thoughts on reaching this milestone. Danny relayed that he took an open job at the site right after his stint in the U.S. Coast Guard, working as a deckhand, First Mate and Captain on his home Newport waters. He described his role with Seaward Services as an everyday job that he doesn’t really stop to think about. He is surprised his ride has gone so long, as every year brings something new and contracts switch. Mike explained he has been working at Seaward Services since the Glen Jermaine era. He said simply that he has enjoyed himself, and has nothing negative to report—he has been treated well. Both men were very humble in regards to their accomplishments.

Rodney Griffith, Newport’s On-Site Manager/Engineer, had the following to say about Danny and Mike:

Daniel Seyster, his wife Christen and two children Chelsea and Albert are Middletown, RI natives. After high school, Danny joined the U.S. Coast Guard where he served onboard the USCGC Barge Eagle for a few years. A little over five years later, he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Coast Guard and went to work

for his father, James Seyster, in 1986. Danny’s father was the Project Manager for MAR Inc., the company that held the government contract for the Narragansett Bay Shallow Water Test Facility NBSWTF here in Newport, RI at that time. Danny was assigned to the vessel YFRT-287 that was home ported here at the NBSWTF. When the NBSWTF contract came up for bid again in 1991, Seaward Services (SSI) was awarded the next five-year contract, which started May 21, 1991. Danny was the First Mate at this time onboard the YFRT-

287. He soon became a valuable asset to the water front with his seamanship knowledge, welding and carpentry skills. He became the go-to guy not only for SSI, but also for ideas for government research and development projects. In 1994, the TWR-841 was acquired from AUTEC by the government and the YFRT -287 was sold and ended up starring in the movie “Shutter Island.” Danny then became the First Mate onboard the TWR-841. Over the years,

Danny has become a very skilled Captain, welder, mechanic and carpenter. EOD had a 35’ work boat that sunk right at the dock here, which eventually was turned over to the government’s NBSWTF. SSI was tasked with getting this vessel back up and operational. Danny was instrumental in this project, overhauling the engines, changing the propulsion engines from keel cooling to heat exchanger cooling, gutting out the interior and building three removable tables with benches that made the cabin useful for lab space. He has designed and manufactured several pieces of support equipment to assist with research and development projects for the Naval Underwater Warfare Center located here in Newport, RI. He is now the Captain of a new 66’ fiberglass research vessel, acquired in May of 2014. He designed and manufactured support beams for the sagging decks, completely refurbished three berthing areas and has made two of them into lab spaces and a third into inside stairs to the bridge. Danny, his wife Christen and two children, Chelsea and Albert, have lived nowhere other than Middletown, RI.

Michael Miller was born in Nantucket, RI and moved to Newport, RI with his father, John Miller. Mike graduated Rodgers High School in Newport, RI in 1985, and a few months later he went to work for MAR who had the government contract for the NBSWTF Newport, RI. Mike has worked at the NBSWTF ever since. His father was still on active duty at the time, training young Naval Officers on the YPs stationed there at NBSWTF. Mike has served on a variety of

It’s hard to believe, but we are now well into our fifth year of operations at American Queen Steamboat Company. After a short winter layup, where both vessels received cosmetic and technical upgrades, the American Queen began the year with a few round-trip New Orleans itineraries before starting her regular runs on the lower Mississippi River; whereas the American Empress kicked off her season in early April under sunny, 75° skies on the Columbia and Snake Rivers in the Pacific Northwest. As we continue to receive outstanding letters from our past passengers calling out specific crew members and their wonderful hospitality, we are delighted to have nearly all of our magnificent crew return for another year.

We are offering a fascinating new cruise on the American Queen this autumn called Five Rivers of the Heartland. After leaving St. Louis on the Mississippi, we turn into the mouth of the Illinois River, then tour the cultural quilt that is the Ohio River. That leads us to the Tennessee River and its scenic views, before winding through the forest covered hills along the Cumberland River

on our way to Nashville. Our guests can experience the unique differences of the five rivers in a single week-long cruise.

Out on the American Empress, we are introducing Vineyards, Vintages and Varietals, where guests can join local winemakers for exclusive tastings onboard and learn about the nuances of traditional winemaking. To add to the experience, our award-winning chefs will be incorporating local wines into a variety of culinary creations onboard.

Later this year we will offer our Holiday & Christmas Markets cruises on the American Queen, again. We are delighted to collaborate with the southern ports in this festive season once again, after a successful initial trial last winter. Our exclusive lineup of holiday markets offers something for everyone, including music, seasonal goods and locally produced crafts.

Lastly, we are pleased to again receive the top award from the World Ocean & Cruise Liner Society for Shore Excursions. This is our fourth consecutive year taking the top award from amongst a field of over 150 cruise vessels representing over twenty cruise lines as determined by passengers who have cruises many times on various vessels. We are pleased to note that both the American Empress and the American Queen placed among the top twenty vessels across ten different categories and that the American Queen came in at number ten overall. Well done to all involved in this incredible achievement!

Captain Willits performed the ceremony, with several crew present to witness. Following, the couple, along with their family and friends onboard, enjoyed a reception in the Ladies’ Parlor and then dinner in the J.M. White Dining Room. There was even a special cake made for the couple and towel swans in the shape of a heart waiting for them upon their return to their room. All of the things that this team of people pulled off provided the guests with a very memorable experience. Crew involved were: Captain Brent Willits, Brenda Hunter, Dave Bailey, Devon Clarke, Jeffery Wilson, Polly Holt, Amanda Turner, Percy Williams, Troy Cage, Taylor Walker, Kelvin Wilson, Ed Jenkins, Anthony Oliver, Porter Staff, Entertainment Staff and officers onboard.

Great job to our crew on the American Queen for creating such a special memory for these guests. Keep up the great work!

We recently received some stunning photos, taken onboard the American Empress, along with incredible aerial drone video footage.

…virtual visits! Okay, now that we hopefully grabbed your attention, please continue reading because you definitely want to know about this new trend! Beginning in May, UHC will offer members the ability to utilize virtual visits to access care online at any time. The virtual visit allows one to see and talk to a doctor from either a mobile device (tablet, iPad, iPhone or other smart phone with camera) or computer 24/7.

We all know how inconvenient, time consuming and sometimes costly it can be to visit a doctor’s office, urgent care or ER. With virtual visits, you can see and speak to a doctor from the convenience of your location. If needed, a prescription can be sent to a local pharmacy. Then, the virtual visit and/or prescription are integrated into your medical benefits you elected. How cool is this?!

What if you’re sick and you’re not covered under the company’s UHC medical plan? Not a problem! UHC is contracting with Doctor on Demand so if you don’t have UHC coverage, you can use Doctor on Demand for a virtual visit.

We hope that you find this latest healthcare movement fascinating, and while we hope none of us have the need to seek medical care,

you now have an option for care without leaving the comfort of your location or home. Please remember to take some time within the upcoming weeks to download either the UHC Health 4 Me app or the Doc on Demand app.

Be well!

The first weekend of May is a special time around the corporate office in New Albany -- the Kentucky Derby! For this month’s recipe, we decided to add a Kentucky flavor to this section. Enjoy!

Recipe of the MonthBrown Sugar and Butter Derby Pecans

INGREDIENTS10 oz of halved pecans

4 tbsp of butter

4 tbsp of brown Sugar

Rosemary chopped and leaves for garnishing

Sea salt

DIRECTIONS

Preheat the oven to 250. Spread the pecan halves on a large baking sheet. Bake them for 15 minutes.

When there are 5 minutes to go, brown your butter. Cook butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Once butter is melted it will foam up a bit, then subside. Keep stirring; a few minutes later the butter will be light brown and then will turn into a deeper brown color; you should be smelling the butter at this point. Takes about 2-4 minutes. Remove pan from heat immediately.

Take pecans out of oven and put into saucepan, add brown sugar and rosemary, stir. Once incorporated, arrange pecans back onto baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes. Take out of oven and sprinkle with sea salt. Serve warm or store in an airtight container for a future party.

Money Matters

Provided by Kevin Maynard, CFA, Sortino Advisory PartnersWHAT IS DEBT MANAGEMENT? As a modern consumer, you need credit. When you were growing up, you may have heard your parents or grandparents say, “If you can’t pay for it with cash, then you can’t afford to buy it.” That may have been sound advice 40 or even 20 years ago, but such attitudes about credit are outdated and unrealistic for most adults working and living in modern times. The average cost of a car, house or college education has skyrocketed when compared to the average household income, so typical consumers need to borrow money if they want to buy a home, drive a car or educate themselves or their children. Throw in a handful of charge accounts and credit cards, and it is no wonder that the average consumer is carrying more debt than ever before. With greater credit needs comes a greater need for debt management.

Good debt management ensures that you will have credit when you need it, make wise borrowing decisions and avoid disaster if you become overextended. You can ensure that loans are available when you need them by establishing and maintaining a positive credit record. You can benefit from many specialized loan programs if you are aware of your borrowing options. You can save money by taking steps to reduce the cost of debt and save yourself from disaster if you know what to do when you can no longer meet your financial obligations.

ESTABLISHING CREDIT You must first establish a credit record if you want to have ready access to loans when you need them. You establish a credit record by borrowing money from a lender who reports to a credit bureau. So, what’s the problem? The problem is that few lenders will loan you money if you don’t have an established credit record. That is the catch-22 of building credit. However, if you have no credit experience, there are several ways to get started.

Thinking small and taking advantage of special credit deals is one way to establish that first credit relationship. Increasing lender confidence with a large down payment, or posting collateral, is another. Insured credit, guaranteed credit, and secured credit help many borrowers get started. If you pay your obligations as agreed, you will be surprised at how many lenders will offer you credit once the ball is rolling.

BORROWING OPTIONS You wouldn’t try to buy a house using proceeds from a student loan, nor would you try to finance your college education with a credit card. However, you might use a home equity loan or line of credit to finance your child’s college education. Knowing what borrowing options are available to you is important when shopping for credit. Some types of loans carry lower interest rates, some have tax-deductible interest, some are subsidized by government entities and still others have special repayment terms designed to serve the needs of a special class of borrower.

Whenever you have the need to finance an expense, it is worth your time and effort to educate yourself about your borrowing options. Lenders today are enormously competitive, and there are more than just interest rates to consider when comparing one loan package to another. Find the loan that best suits your needs, and be sure you have examined all your choices.

CREDIT REPORTS Part of what makes it possible for you to shop for credit is your credit report, which is a record of your past credit relationships. As mentioned previously, establishing and maintaining a good credit record makes you an attractive customer for lenders. You will get the best deals and have access to the largest number of credit options if your good credit record is maintained.

The first step in maintaining a good credit record is to pay your obligations as agreed. However, merely paying your bills is not enough. Many credit reports contain errors that are clerical in nature or caused by

misidentification (e.g., someone else’s bad credit gets put on your report). Although these errors are not your fault, they can cause delay or rejection when applying for a loan. To avoid such complications and delays, you need to obtain copies of your credit reports from the various national credit reporting agencies. Once done, you need to interpret the information and determine whether errors have been made. If there are problems with your report, you have specific rights that you can exercise and a procedure for correcting errors. You can force the credit reporting agencies to investigate errors and either correct, confirm or delete the information, usually within 30 days.

REPAIRING POOR CREDIT If the information on your credit report is correct but bad, you face a more difficult task. However, a poor credit record can be improved. Adding good credit to your report is helpful. It shows that your period of financial difficulty is over and that you are once again making good on your debts. You can also go back to creditors that reported bad information and negotiate a deal in which you agree to pay off the account, or make additional payments on the account, if the lender will agree to upgrade your credit status.

Your report may contain bad credit because of a dispute with a creditor. Perhaps you purchased a defective appliance on credit, the merchant failed to repair or replace it, you refused to make payments, and the merchant reported you as delinquent. You can add a consumer statement to your credit report to tell your side of the story. If all else fails in your attempt to repair credit, you may have to simply wait out your credit problems. Even bankruptcies disappear from your report in time.

REDUCING THE COST OF DEBT It is good to periodically evaluate your debt situation and determine whether you can reduce the cost of debt. It makes no sense to be paying more money for interest if you can be paying less. There are several ways to reduce the cost of debt: You can refinance loans to get lower interest rates, use the equity in your home to pay off high interest loans and credit card balances, or transfer your credit card balances to cards with lower rates.

Other options include prepaying debts and liquidating assets to pay off loans and to avoid further interest charges. You may also seek to reduce or eliminate noninterest costs related to borrowing, such as private mortgage insurance (PMI). If you have kept your mortgage payments current and built up sufficient equity in your house, you may be able to cancel your PMI coverage. Many of these options have tradeoffs. For more information, see a financial professional.

OPTIONS WHEN YOU CAN’T MEET YOUR FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS Ideally, you should never incur more debt than you can afford. If that plan fails, then your next task is to recognize when you are financially overextended and do something about it. Doing nothing is the worst possible choice. The longer you wait to take action, the more severe your financial troubles are likely to become. Increasing your income stream may be an option. If not, there are things you can do to reduce your monthly obligations. Reducing the cost of debt, or negotiating directly with your creditors may enable you to lower monthly payments. If you need professional advice, you can hire a credit counselor or contact one of the many nonprofit credit counseling services, such as Consumer Credit Counseling Services, which can often arrange an affordable repayment plan for you. If things are really out of control, you may want to consult an attorney about bankruptcy and determine whether you would benefit from a self-help support program such as Debtors Anonymous. You should face up to your financial difficulties and take steps to resolve them.

Mark Andrews is the Senior Captain for our HMS Ferries site in Oklahoma City and is a self-proclaimed “boat addict.” He loves his position because he gets to be around and work with boats, as well as be on the water, on a daily basis -- something he did not think would be possible when moving to the heartland with his wife.

Mark has been on the water most of his life. As a kid, he loved windsurfing and in college, he raced dinghies. His first job out of college was teaching environmental education on an old wooden tall ship. Here, he realized that he could get paid to work on boats and has been in the maritime industry ever since. Mark worked on tall ships for seven years, mostly in Delaware Bay and Narragansett Bay, then joined the Commissioned Officer Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA - the nation’s smallest and least known uniformed service). He was with NOAA for three years, mapping the ocean bottom on a research ship off the coast of Alaska.

He married an Oklahoma girl and moved to the land-locked heartland, where he discovered Oklahoma River Cruises. Mark was hired on as a Captain and is now Senior Captain after seven years with the company. As Senior Captain, he is responsible for the

operations of the three boat fleet in Oklahoma City and drives the boats, schedules crew, trains new crew and serves on the Safety Cadre. On a typical day, Mark spends about nine hours on the boat, cruising a seven mile stretch of river transiting two locks and making four stops along the way.

In his free time, he loves to spend time on the water, particularly kayaking in the wildlife refuge near his house. Mark also has a soft spot for animals and enjoys relaxing with his four dogs and three cats.

Thank you for your continued dedication to HMS Ferries and for sharing your love of water and the maritime industry with us!

Because of the significance that our core values hold in each work day, this section of the Communicator is dedicated to showcasing a person or team that has demonstrated one of our core values. This month, we are featuring Captain Brent Willits; Port Engineer, Marvin Williams; Chief Engineer, John O’Brien; Hotel Manager and Executive Chef, Paul Wayland-Smith; and Electician/Maintenance, Wayne Conaway, onboard the American Queen for the core value of Teamwork. They surprised the rest of the crew by preparing a delicious dinner of fresh oysters, shrimp and tacos for all.

“It’s great to see that we have leadership onboard that exemplifies teamwork and puts our core values into action. This act of kindness towards our crew reminds us all that we are in this together and are working towards a common goal. Thank you Captain Willits, Marvin, John, Paul and Wayne for boldly displaying teamwork onboard the American Queen and treating the entire crew to a delicious dinner!”

vessels that have come and gone: YP’s, RV Endeavor, wooden hulled torpedo retrievers 82 & 83, and YFRT-287, to name a few. In 1989, the Ranger was built in Pascagoula, MS. Mike was a Plank owner on her and sailed her to the new homeport here in Newport, RI. In 1994, the government decided to swap homeports with the Ranger and the Torpedo Weapons Retriever TWR-841, which was home ported out of AUTEC. Since 1994, Mike has been the Lead Deckhand onboard TWR-841 for SSI at the NBSWTF. With only four employees assigned to the TWR-841, he is responsible for preserving, maintaining and painting the 120’ vessel. Each research and development project is different, and with that said, each project requires different equipment to be safely secured to the vessel for a smooth testing experience for the project personnel. During Torpedo Recovery Exercises, he operates a small 12’ RIB in open ocean waters, getting close enough to the unit to install a nose cage for recovery purposes. It is not uncommon for the Range Department to get a phone call from NUWC mechanical and electrical Engineers to pick the brains of both Mike and Danny on their thoughts on how to deploy, recover or rig new projects they are working on.

Danny and Mike’s experience and professionalism is why the motto for the vessel is “If you need it done, call the 841.” Both men are team leaders during torpedo exercises, welders, carpenters, CAT III crane operators, forklift operators and riggers. Both are qualified in HAZWOPER and first aid/CPR/AED, and both are arms/ammunition/explosive certified. These abilities coupled with excellent seamanship skills make Danny and Mike tremendous assets to the Newport team.

We congratulate and thank Danny and Mike for the contributions they have made to our company over the past 25 years.
