Improving collaboration in healthcare

Saville teams are working with NHS trusts across the country, installing interactive touch screens in hospital wards and delivering dramatic improvements in efficiency. Electronic bed management systems have reduced the time taken to log patient transfers and discharges from three days to under ten minutes!

Many Trusts have previously operated two systems for patient management - handwritten dry-wipe boards combined with an electronic desktop programme. These have been difficult to keep updated in real time and time-consuming to keep synchronised with one another, causing delays to patient discharge and progression throughout the hospitals.

Proprietary patient management software can be run via a browser on a PC linked to a central server. Tablet computers are also used alongside the

screens to update information. Large format monitors allow care teams to view the real-time bed state on the wards and manage the flow of patients. Traffic light coding systems allow staff coming on duty to see which patients require assessment and where they can be found. This information can also be accessed remotely on a desktop by specialists such as physiotherapists while on another ward or in their own department.

A common factor has been the need to increase visibility of patient information and ensure the same information is available on every desktop. This increases efficiencies in each ward and makes decision-making easier and quicker. The systems are used by nurses on a daily basis as well as doctors and multi-disciplinary teams including physiotherapists, dieticians, occupational health therapists and social workers.

PATIENT FLOW MANAGEMENT

Hospedia Extramed3 software in use at Derby Hospital

Visible patient status in minutes

Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation TrustAt Derby Hospital, we installed fifty Saville Multi-Touch 55” interactive LED screens* with six-point touch facility and integral slot-in PCs. These are used to manage clinical workflow, using the UK market leading Extramed 3 Patient Flow management software from Hospedia.

This provides auditable and accurate data regarding patient locations as well as bed status information and helps improve operational responses to infection outbreak. Tracing patient movements and identifying points of contact quickly reduces the time between an outbreak and the implementation of effective isolation measures.

Lancashire NHS TrustAt Lancashire NHS Trust, the previous system comprised manually updated dry-wipe boards, marker pens and paperwork. An initial installation of 24 Saville Multi-Touch screens included a mix of 55”, 46” and 42” touch monitors with embedded PCs. Some are wall mounted with others on height adjustable mobile trolleys. Each includes a webcam, keyboard and mouse plus a wi-fi USB pen drive. As well as hosting the bed management system, the screens are used for Microsoft Lync-based meetings, allowing consultants to speak to staff on the ward remotely. Further applications are now emerging as the technology becomes established.

*Why Saville Multi-Touch?A Saville Patient Flow network is built around the versatile, dynamicSaville Multi-Touch screen. Available in a range of sizes from 32” up to 84” and designed for 24/7 use, this latest touchscreen technology is designed with collaboration and ease of use in mind. It delivers high resolution images in high brightness environments – with no distracting shadows.

Easy Installation – requiring only a data connection and a single13A mains supply, the units are very easy to deploy across an existing infrastructure with minimal disruption to everyday workload on the ward.

Integral PC – the internal PC is optimised to work perfectly with the software and allows for the adoption of all gesture functions offered by Windows 7 and 8. Having the computer on-board allows for a single data connection back to the central server located elsewhere in the hospital.

Gesture Control – the advanced multi-touch and gesture capabilities mean that up to two people can use the same screen at the same time providing enhanced decision making and improving efficiency and productivity.

Future Proof – running the latest Windows operating systems means the screens are compatible with all leading patient care software systems. Software updates are easily enabled ensuring that the screens always display the latest and most up to date information.

Environmentally Friendly – with silent, fanless operation and auto sensing data ports which switch off the screen when no data is displayed, reduces power consumption and running costs.

For near instant diagnosis of stroke patients, Saville is able to deliver a telemedicine solution that will provide an out of hours capability. Consultants at home simply dial in over video to review stroke patients around the clock – a potentially life-saving service with the added benefit of major cost savings and reducing stress for practitioners.

The Saville solution includes a Central Management system for video clients via PC, laptop, iPad or iPhone, plus a VBP firewall traversal facility and four specialist telemedicine platforms, called Practitioner Carts.

Fitted with high definition video cameras, Practitioner Carts enable a stroke patient to be seen in real time by a consultant neurology specialist typically working from a tablet, desktop or laptop computer. The consultant, whose face appears on a computer screen at the bedside, is able to talk to the hospital team and evaluate the patient.

The consultant can view symptoms in the patient’s eyes and review brain scans to detect possible damage from a haemorrhage or blocked artery. If necessary, patients can be administered clot-busting medications within the narrow window of time necessary to minimise permanent injury to the brain.

TELEMEDICINEFast, effective stroke diagnosis

The extensive experience and resources built by Saville includes key contracts and innovative projects with major hospitals, NHS trusts and other public sector organisations across the UK. The company has recently carried out a series of videoconferencing installations and technical support contracts with several NHS trusts across the UK.

Durham & Darlington NHS Foundation TrustAt Durham & Darlington, we were engaged to provide consultation on the Trust’s communication requirements and produced a 30-page strategic document outlining the benefits of IP-based videoconferencing solutions. The document provided detailed information about recommended infrastructure and provided a number of room-based solutions to cover a wide range of uses.

The document was used by the Trust to formulate a business plan to secure funds to implement the recommendations. Following a strict procurement exercise, Saville was appointed to deploy and implement the solution, comprising a number of meeting rooms and two main boardrooms.

After the installation, we put in place a programme of extended support to ensure that users maximise the benefits of the technology. Moving forward, the Saville team is working closely with the Trust to trial and implement a firewall traversal solution to enable extended access for mobile and remote colleagues plus external organisations.

Strategic video solutions in healthcare

The academic schools at Cardiff University share the site with the University Hospital of Wales, the third largest hospital in the UK and a major teaching and research centre. Each school has its own specialist resources and facilities, including IT facilities, lecture theatres, seminar rooms, libraries and operating theatres at the dedicated Heath Park healthcare campus.

Saville Audio Visual won the contract to equip a new lecture theatre in the Tenovus Building at the School of Medicine. The integrated AV system features a 6000-lumen Panasonic high definition projector with failsafe dual lamp technology, plus an Extron control system built into a bespoke Saville lectern.

The lectern accommodates the source equipment rack, Extron touch panel and a compact Samsung visualiser, all linked to the hospital’s resident desktop PC system. The result is an intuitive and versatile presentation facility which is easy to operate with little or no preparation required.

Service Delivery Manager at Heath Park campus, Tim James said: “I was very impressed with the installation from start to finish. Prior to work commencing I was kept regularly updated by the project manager on design layouts, delivery times of kit and installation schedules. The build quality of the lectern was superb as was the quality of the kit supplied. Inevitably there were a few issues to resolve which were beyond Saville’s control but they were quick to respond and rectify any problems. I would have no hesitation in using Saville AV again.”

INTEGRATED LECTURE THEATREDESIGN

Integrated lecture theatre solution at University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff

The need for efficient, decisive and informed decision making is paramount in the modern healthcare environment.

Microsoft Lync is the unified communication platform that enables easy connections to colleagues and external specialists wherever they are, helping reduce costs while increasing productivity and responsiveness.

As part of an integrated, unified communications solution, MS Lync software enables rich audio, video and data collaboration. With interactive screens on the ward, in the classroom and the consulting room linked to senior healthcare practitioners, via mobile devices, the decision making process is accelerated and patient care enhanced.

Robust, scalable and affordable, Microsoft Lync provides enterprise class telephony as well as secure messaging, videoconferencing and desktop sharing capabilities. It enables instant messaging, with HD quality video conferencing and modern ‘touch first’ capabilities for fast, natural communications in ‘work anywhere’ scenarios. Rather than using phone numbers, Lync accesses identities allowing communication with that individual, when available, wherever they are. With the rapid increase in mobile technologies that can harness the power of video communication, this means that the call is as close to having the actual person being there personally. Communications are completely secure and patient confidentiality is maintained as the system uses built in encryption.

MS Lync 2013 provides a familiar and consistent experience to the user and is completely cross platform enabling easy connection across multiple devices – PC/desktop, smartphone, tablet and room systems.

The specialist technical teams at Saville have all the experience and understanding to help design, specify and ensure that you can deploy the correct solution for your needs.
