Communication: for change

An IEC material prepared by Uttarakhand Livelihoods Improvement Project for the Himalaya

Having right information at right time and sharing it accordingly is an integral part of knowledge management. ULIPH had its focus on this issue since the inception of the project, visualizing that whatever information reaches the community should be concrete and easily understood by the community. Whatever information is being given to them orally should be documented properly for future use, so that as and when required, they can use it. In view of this the following IEC material and documents have been prepared by ULIPH for the benefit of its staff and community.

1.SHG Chitramala

This has been developed primarily to train the SHGs. With the help of SHG Chitramala SHG members would be able to understand the concept of SHGs, its operations, savings, interloaning and loan etc. There are 26 modules in it comprising of :

2. Health module

Five health modules have been developed in view to educate the community on health related issues like community health, handicapped, nutritive food, pregnant woman and the health schemes of government. In order to run the health programme successfully, a module on: Samudaya aadharit swasthya shiksha ke liye kaarya pranaali has also been prepared.

3. Gender module

One gender module has been prepared to sensitize the community on gender issues. This module can be used with all the categories of community during the training session.

4. A step towards empowerment

This training module was prepared and has been specially designed for instructors or trainers. Under this 12 modules have been developed to make self help groups/SHGs aware of different subjects like:

• About Aajeevika project

• Structural analysis of society

• Analysis of local resources of loans

• Concept of self help group

• How to conduct the group/SHGs meeting

• Leadership

• Collective decision making

• Development of group/SHGs and its rules and regulations

• Goals of a group/SHGs

• Common fund management

• Assessment by groups/SHGs

• Analysis of gender relations in a family

5. Model byelaws

For SHGs a model byelaws booklet has been prepared and using this they could prepare byelaws for their own use.

6. List of villages

It has the list of 959 revenue villages of 17 blocks in 5 districts of the project area that have been selected for the implementation of project.

7. Participatory Self Assessment

This module has been prepared for the participatory self assessment of SHGs and it has been divided into three parts. In part 1, standards for the assessment of activities being done for 12 month old SHGs, in second part 12 to 18 months old SHG and in third part assessment of activities of 18 to 24 months old SHG are listed. The main objective of this module is to facilitate the SHG in self evaluatation.

8. Len-Den (TowardsTransactions of literacy)

This module has been prepared for those groups/SHGs which have started taking initiatives on social issues, which are regularly saving and doing interloaning etc, which are maintaining their records correctly and are interested in persuing some kind of economic activities. This module would enable groups/SHGs to make correct choice of employment, to prepare a work plan for it, to identify the market and to establish their own enterprise in correct manner.This module is based on case studies and 8 modules have been prepared with this: 1 Saving and its benefits, 2 Skills and resources, 3 Weakness & Challenges, 4 Four factors of employment, 5 Calculating cost, 6 Income and profits, 7 Managing challenges, 8 Making a business plan.

9. Jaivik Kheti Chitramala

This Chitramala has been prepared with a view to impart information on whys and how’s of organic farming. Through this Chitramala, farmers would be informed about the common techniques of organic farming. There are 16 modules in the Chitramala:-

10. Snake and Ladder (Organic farming )

In order to make the farmers aware of Organic farming in an easy manner a game of snake and ladder has been prepared. Farmers are sensitized about the the do’s and don’ts of organic farming through this game.

11. Issues and initiatives (Handbill)

This handbill has been prepared with a view to educate the community on the issues of climate change. How can they help in fighting climatic change while doing their daily chores and activities?

12. Documentation training guide

With the help of this guide one would be able to fill the SHG register properly as the page no 1 to 4 have been explained columnwise in detail. One can maintain his/her records easily using this guide.

13. Drudgery Reduction (Poster)

A number of activities with the community were carried out by the project in order to reduce the work load of womenfolk like fodder grass plantation, vermi compost, Ganga Gagar and use of improved agriculture implements. An analytical study was carried out to see the changes in women after adopting these activities. Based on this study this poster has been prepared.

14. Right to information

In order to make the community aware of the right to information a folder on Right to Information Act 2005 is published.

15. Kuchh Kadam Atmanirbhar Uttarahand ki ore

25 case studies of project were compiled in the publication: Kuchh Kadam Atmanirbhar

Uttarahand ki ore. In this book the voice of members of self help groups, villagers and other stakeholders, their experiences and the changes that have come in their life after they joined the project have been documented/ compiled.

16. Aajeevika Guide

Ajeevika guide, a booklet has been prepared so that Aajeevika households can take the advantage of different welfare schemes run by different government institutions. In this guide the information regarding the officials that should be contacted for different work has been included. The information regarding the schemes that are being run by department of agriculture, horticulture, fisheries, livestock development board, dairy development board, Uttarakhand sheep and wool development board, krishi utpadan mandi, micro irrigation, rural development and bank/NABARD has been given. In addition to this the the names and contact numbers of the representatives of Panchayat have also been included in this guide.

17. Health intervention module

17.1 With an objective to inculcate health awareness amongst the community, health

interventions related to common disease were done in collaboration with Medical college Srinagar and were implemented in district Tehri and Chamoli. Under this programme the health issues covered were related to high blood pressure, anaemia in adolescence age and pregnancy, ORS, breast feeding, Iodine and malaria and handbills on the same were also published.

17.2 To make the community aware of the mental health of children two posters and handbills were prepared on how to take care of children between the ages of 0 to 5 yrs. These posters were prepared mainly on how the chidren speak and how they walk.

18. Federation ke madhyam se samagra vikas

A state level workshop on experience sharing of federation was held along with stakeholders. The concept of federations, process, experiences and conclusion were compiled and documented by the project in the form of this booklet.

19. Legal literacy Training programmes were organized in five project districts in collaboration with Rural Litigation and Entitlement centre in order to make the community aware of schemes like legal literacy and MNREGA. Following topics were covered in the posters and folders that were made available to community: MNREGA, Domestic violence act, Right to Information, Consumer protection law, Female infanticide and information on free legal litreracy etc.

20. Organic farming related training module

In project area the process of organic certification is being implemented in collaboration with Uttarakhand Organic Board and they have prepared some documents and traing material related to this. Project has published the following documents and training material for use in the project areas.

20.1 Organic farming kit

This kit consists of 14 posters in which the following aspects of organic farming have been illustrated:

• What is certification

• Introduction of certification process

• Recognition in organic market and availing higher prices

• Benefits of certification

• How do farmers participate in the process of certification

• Certification of small and marginal farmers

• Formation of SHGs under Internal control certification

• Exchange of different informations under Internal control certification

• Documentation under ICS

• Internal inspection

• The process of internal inspection

• How to apply for external inspection in certification institutes

• External inspection and availing certificates

• Towards organic marketing

20.2 Organic farming poster

This poster has been prepared for procuring the organic certification in which formation of SHGs related to organic farming, documentation, internal inspection, external inspection and availing organic certification and selling organic products through pictorial illustrations.

20.3 Internal quality control guide

This guide has been prepared for internal control system for availing organic certification. This internal control system is a system which is operated and implemented by producer’s group. The farmer involved in this, implements organic farming standards in his agricultural area. This guide would help all the farmers on the issues of internal control system.

20.4 Internal standards of organic farming

In this booklet a detailed description of internal standards for the use of producer groups. This guide would enable the small and marginal farmers to implement the organic programme in their own area in effective manner and get the organic certification done in a simple way.

21. Project Calendar

From the year 2005 onwards, project has published its theme based calendars every year as following:

22. Aajeevika Today

The activities, challenges, innovations and thought provoking articles related to project are being highlighted in a quarterly news letter AajeevikaToday which is being published from October 2010 onwards regularly. Seven issues of this news letter have been published.

23. Federation activity calendar

A calendar, based on the federation’s activities has been prepared for having better management and planning in the federations. In this activity calendar, all the activities taken up by the federations are given month wise

24. Interest calculation chart

With an objective of making the members aware of finance literacy, a chart on calculating interest has been prepared. This chart has been prepared in two ways: one for calculating interest on the interloan and two for calculating CCL and term loans and KCC loan.

25. Federation ke madhyam se samagra vikas

All the federations of the project have been registered under the Self Reliant Cooperative Act of Uttarakhand. A module: Federation ke madhyam se samagra vikas has been developed for making the members aware of the concept of cooperatives and for building their capacity. This module has been divided into four parts and 26 modules: Part 1 : In this module the definition of federation, its principles, the structure and services rendered by the federation has been explained in order to develop a common understanding of federation .

Part 2 : The information regarding Uttarakhand Self Reliant Coperative Act in a brief and simple manner, the structure of rules and reglations of federation and information regarding the registration process so that the board of directors and other members can understand it and work accordingly. Part 3 : Under this, an emphasis has been laid on the duties and responsibilities of members. It would be easy to explain the work allotted to members and board of directors with the help of this. Part 4 : Key points of institutional and business management have been given in this. Under this information has been given on the issues like - meetings of board of directors, annual general body meeting, election process, different committees of federation, management of business and treasury, legal responsibilities and maintenance of important document.

26. SHG bank linkage

This document is prepared for group promoters and other staff members. All the necessary information on linking the SHGs to bank has been given in this. In addition to this formats of all the necessary documents have also been added to this.

27. Disha

This document has been prepared for the workers who directly work with the community. It has the guideline for the workers as to what kind of knowledge they should have and what are the main points that should be kept in mind by them.

28. Enterprise development training

This document has been prepared during the enterprise development training of business and group promoters. In this document training material for BP and GP has been compiled.

29. Diary

Every year project publishes a diary for the use of its staff, federation members and for other stakeholders since the year 2010. This diary has been prepared on the following subjects: Year 2010 - Basic information about the project including the names and phone nos. of all the boards/ directorates. Year 2011 - Environment protection Year 2012 - International cooperative year

30. Film

In order to disseminate the information regarding the work done by project, three short films have been made by the project –

30.1 Jagi Jawa

In this film a detailed account of the project has been given as to once the community come and join the project they can become more aware and prosperous. In this film a special focus is on the womenfolk of the project area in order to link themselves with the business activities selected by the project for improving their incomes. They should collectively work for eradicating the evils like untouchability and discrimination. For the prosperity of the state they should take the benefits of all the welfare schemes. Community has been advised to take up such enterprises which would increase their income. They should form the federations and market their products collectively so that

the real owners would get the benefits not the mediators. Villagers would then prosper and if they prosper, people would lead happy life and all their dreams would come true.

30.2 Udna hai hame Neele Aasmaan me

Why and how self help groups are formed and how changes thereafter in the life of its members take place. How SHG members help each other in times of need and how do women members get empowered in SHGs. This fact has been highlighted in this film in the form of story that a girl Phyunli is very talented and when she gets a chance to show her talent in the city, the shortage of money hinders her way to go and show her talent. In such difficult time SHG formed in her village helps her and her family out with financial support

30.3 Aage Badhenge ham This film has the detailed description of UPASaC company. In this an effort has been made to educate the rural community through a local deity called Burdhdeva. The activities of UPASaC have been highlighted as to how UPASaC is committed to improve the income of rural people and is continuously trying to link villagers with different small scale income generating enterprises. Besides this the effort of starting a sanitary napkin unit, van panchayat, ecotourism, use of power tiller and activities like vermi compost have also been highlighted in the CD.s

31. Vedio documentation

Activities done under the project are continuously being documented through successful and unsuccessful case studies. Project has prepared video documentation of such endeavors as following:

31.1 A visual Journey :

In this the experiences of federation representatives of all the five districts has been compiled. This video has been prepared during the state level workshop of federation representatives in which the representatives have shared their experiences. In this document the interviews of first year federation representatives have been given in which they have shared their experiences as to how project has brought the changes in their life as well as in the society. How the federations are benefitting the society and what plans they have for the future.

31.2 Women champion

Women have proved themselves while working with the project and have also encouraged the women of their village and area to do the same. The feat of these women have brought about a great degree of change in the life of community and their family. These women have worked in an extraordinary manner in the field of good governance, institutional development, enterprise development and natural resources. In this film the interview of 19 such women have been documented. Out of these 19 women, work of five women have also been mentioned in an IFAD book Trail Blazers: Lighting the way ahead.

31.3 Fedearation ke madhyam se samgra vikas

A workshop - Fedearation ke madhyam se samgra vikas was organised on jan 6-7, 2011 along with some other stakeholders like NABARD, GTZ, GRAMYA, Bamboo and fiber board, UOCB, CAP, HIMOTHAN, CHIRAG, HARC, NAVDANYA, CBED and Mahila Samakhya. The project has documented the concept, processes, experiences and outcome of this workshop in the form of two videos named as Federation ke madhyam se samagra vikas. In first part of video the proceedings of first day and interviews of the participants are documented whereas in second part, the experiences of participants and conclusion of workshop is documented.

31.4 Dairy workshop

Collective dairy activity is being carried out by federations under the value chain –dairy. This dairy activity was initially started in Chamoli by Parvateeya Krishi Vipanan Swayatta Sahakarita. Presently this activity is being carried out in all the project districts. On 25-26th March yet another workshop was organised to share the experiences of women engaged in dairy activity. The experiences of these women participants were documented in a video by the name : Dairy workshop.

32. District level video documentation

Project has prepared a video documentation of the success stories of the project activities. Under this following videos – Agriculture, horticulture, water and soil conservation, aromatic and medicinal plants, kuroiler and dairy and non farm sector have been made :

32.1 District Almora

32.1.1 Agriculture, horticulture, water and soil conservation and aromatic

and medicinal plants

In district Almora off season vegetable cultivation activity in polyhouse was taken up in three clusters viz Bhainsiyachhana, Motiapather and Naini. In these polyhouses, production of Europian vegetables like Jukuni, coloured capsicum and Snowpea was done. The documentation work was done interviewing Ganga Devi, Madhuli Devi, Trilok Singh, Haruli Devi of Dhaula Devi, Bhawna Bhatt of Naini and Dhan Singh of Motiapather cluster and their experiences was shared.

32.1.2 Non Farm Sector and ecotourism

In this CD three case studies have been documented :

• Womenfolk in district Almora were trained in spinning and weaving on handloom. Experiences of these women were documented in this CD.

• Documentation work related to a CMRE- Asha General Store has been done.

• Documentation of the Village Home Stays and campsite in Naini cluster was done.

32.1.3 Dairy and Kroiler

• In the first part of the CD information regarding the kuroiler rearing is given as to how the villagers have benefitted by rearing the kuroiler. They are making good profit not only by selling the eggs but also by selling the kuroiler for meat purpose.

• In second part the Dairy activity with the support of project has been highlighted as for income generation, there is enormous potential in Dairy activity.

32.2 District Bageshwar

32.2.1 Nonfarm and ecotourism

• CMRE: Two activities of CMRE and coppercraft have been covered in this CD. Through CMRE villagers are getting all the items of household needs at their doorsteps and at right prices.

• Coppercraft: In second activity of coppercraft, although villagers were traditionally making copper goods but project has trained the group members on this craft through a dsigner and they are now making many items of new design.

32.2.2 Agriculture, Horticulture, Water and Soil Conservation and Aromatic and Medicinal

Plants

• In the first part of CD, the highlight is on the organic farming in Gola village of district Bageshwar and how did the production go up after using organic manure in the fields.

• In second part the information regarding the bee keeping has been given through the interaction with the beneficiaries.

32.2.2 Dairy and Kroiler

The content of this CD relate to the interviews of the beneficiaries who are rearing kuroiler in their backyards. All the beneficiaries have revealed that for good return in this enterprise it is very important to take good care of their kuroilers and maintain high degree of cleanliness in the Murgibada.

32.3 District Chamoli

32.3.1 Dairy and Kroiler

• In this CD information has been given on the dairy work being done in district Chamoli and how the beneficiaries are being benefitted by dairy activity.

• In the second part information on kuroiler rearing and the changes after indulging in this activity have been given. By adopting poultry activity one can not earn money by selling both eggs and the meat.

32.3.2 Agriculture, Horticulture, Water and Soil Conservation and Aromatic and Medicinal

Plants

• Rhododendron Juice : The project has trained its beneficiaries in many enterprises in order to improve their livelihoods. Mushroom cultivation and preparing of Rhododendron juice are the example of such activities. In this CD these two activities have been highlighted.

• Fodder Grass cultivation: In order to mitigate the problems of fodder grass and thus reducing the workload of the rural womenfolk, this CD narrates how the women have benefitted by cultivating fodder grass Napier. Besides reducing the workload of women, increase in milk has also been recorded in milch animals after consuming Napier grass.

32.3.3 Women Empowerment

In this CD the efforts made by the project to empowered the womenfolk of district Chamoli, have been narrated in detail. Women have learnt to save after forming the groups and they are able to do all the work for which they were earlier laking the loan. Now they have been empowered in true sense of the word.

32.3.4 District Tehri

32.4.1 Dairy and Kuroiler

• In first part, of the CD the information on Kuroiler rearing has been given and how it is useful in improving the livelihoods of rural people. They are getting good returns after selling the eggs and meat.

• In second part, the information on Dairy activity being practiced in district Almora and the income generating potential of this activity has been discussed.

32.4.2 Nonfarm and ecotourism

• Teen Dhara Dhaba: Through this CD the story of Shrimati Bharosi Devi has been narrated as to how she has shown her business acumenship by opening a dhaba in Teen Dhara with the support of project.

• Community managed retail enterprise(CMRE) : Project has helped the rural community of Uttarakhand by giving them financial support for starting the CMRE in their villages in order to improve their livelihoods and also to make, the goods of their household needs, available at their doorsteps.

32.4.3 Agriculture, Horticulture, Water and Soil Conservation and Aromatic and Medicinal

Plants

• In district Tehri one Orange/ Malta juice unit was established which has completely put a check on the role of mediators. This CD contains the exerpts of the talks with these entrepreneurs.

• Van Panchayats : With the support of the project, successful tree plantation has been done and many trees have been planted in village Saurh of District Tehri. The benefits of tree plantation have been discussed in this CD .

32.5 District Uttarkashi

32.5.1 Dairy and Kroiler

• In this CD the information on dairy activity has been given as to how the rural people of district Uttarkashi are benefitting by the loan given to them to purchase the good species of buffaloes. Other efforts made by the project are also benfitting the rural people. The importance of paravet has also been highlighted in the CD.

• In second part of the CD information on Kuroiler rearing has also been given as to how their livelihoods have improved after being trained in poultry farming. They are earning quite well not only selling eggs but also by selling the meat and their health issues are also being solved

32.5.2 Nonfarm and ecotourism

• In this CD, exerpts of the conversations of those SHG members have been recorded, who have been given the loan to start the Ata Chakki.

• Grocery Shop : In this CD also exerpts of those people are recorded who have been given loan to start the Grocry shop in their respective villages.

32.5.3 Agriculture, Horticulture, Water and Soil Conservation and Aromatic

and Medicinal Plants

• Van Panchayats : In this CD the benefits of planting fruit trees and fodder grasses and its benefits have been discussed and also how these forests can be protected by fencing around it. In these forests, one can grow medicinal plants also besides growing fodder and trees for fuelwood.

• Organic Firtilizers : In this CD the importance of organic firtilizers and harmful effects of chemical firtilizers have been discussed. Organic firtilizers are not only good for health but are also light in weight. When used on vegetables and other crops the yield also increases along with the taste.

33. Cloth Banner :

A cloth banner has been prepared for dissemination of project activities and it has been prepared using

hand painting. This banner is 21 mtrs long and different activities of the project like community

empowerment,drudgery reduction, savings, business activities etc have been illustrated on it by hand

painting. This banner is installed in different exhibitions and fairs with a view to highlighting the various

activities undertaken by the project.
