    Communication Excellence in Human Resources

The way we communicate with others and with ourselves ultimately determines the quality of

our lives. - Anthony Robbins (Larkin 14).

Communication is the lifeblood of everyday tasks, and it is essential to reach

communication excellence. The lack of communication excellence produces poor

communication causing pain, conflict, loss of relationships, and productivity (Lawson 54).

Communication means to create shared meaning and understanding, getting the point across and

this is necessary in Human Resources. Through the interview with the Director of Human

Resources of Crown College, one can understand the role that Communication Excellence plays

in Human Resources (Appendix 2). Therefore, communication excellence is important in order

to influence others, to ensure a message is clearly delivered, and to promote understanding

because communicating effectively takes real skill (Lawson 55).

Communication Excellence is determining what method or methods of communication to

use depending on the situation. Since Communication is so broad, the topic focused on this paper

is Communication Excellence in Human Resources. In order to discover the role of

Communication Excellence in Human Resources one can interview someone such as the

Director of Human Resources of Crown College, Amy Luesse (Appendix 2).

Amy Luesse studied Communications as her bachelors degree and her masters degree

in Emphasis in Communication. Then, she began teaching in a small college and also worked in

hiring faculty members. Over the years, she found herself teaching less and working more in the

hiring area of Human Resources (Appendix 2). As she saw the great results of her enormous

effort in hiring the faculty, she began to be passionate about Human Resources as a result she has

done it for 12 years. She says that the functions she enjoys most as a director of Human

Resources are strategic planning elements (planning ahead for benefit programs, staffing needs)

and legal and compliance elements (employee handbook-keeping current with federal and state

    legislation) (Appendix 2).

To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way we

perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others.

    - Anthony Robbins (Larkin 13)

With the interview the author of this paper learned the role that Communication

Excellence plays in Human Resources. The interview helped made clear that Human Resources

is making the most of employees talents and gifts to expand the mission of Crown College

through strategic planning, employee relations, and recruiting and staffing. Communication in

Human Resources is important because it is constant and ongoing; it is always important that

employees need to be informed of current information. Communication is essential for the

employees so they can be aware of the information that will be helpful for them in their jobs and

help them feel value as an employee (Appendix 2).

One of the abilities that need to be developed in order to accomplish Communication

Excellence in Human Resources is striving to find the most effective means of communication to

large groups of people. Also, other abilities are the use of interpersonal skills, such as empathy,

tact, open-mindedness, and friendliness, and techniques, such as clear writing, active listening,

open- and closed-questioning. There are at least three steps to create greater excellence in

Human Resources. One is to keep current on laws that will guide policy and procedure. Another

step is to embrace change, because Human Resources is constantly changing and evolving.

Lastly, have a good relationship with an employment law attorney. The examples of

Communication Excellence applied to Human Resources are having a current and up to date

employee handbook and the use of different forms of technology and modes of communication

to communicate with employees (Purcell 66).

One way to accomplish these examples is by developing communication skills.

Communication excellence is needed in Human Resource in order to advanced communication

skills that will equipped employees with the right attitude and techniques to create shared

meaning and understanding in the workplace, as well as teaching how to get your point across.

Communication skills in Human Resources are relevant because they are one of the most

decisive factors used in organizations for promotions and choosing team managers and project

leaders. Through communication the employee is able to get his message across clearly, lead

teams, and negotiate his salary when it is appropriate (Purcell 67). Overall, successful workers

with higher salaries and effective relations with clients and colleagues possess good

communication skills. Those who have great abilities with good communication skills are always

in the process which involves becoming an expert in their field and practicing the 5

communication skills -- be clear, correct, considerate, complimentary and confident(Purcell 69).

Developing excellent communication skills is absolutely essential to effective

leadership. The leader must be able to share knowledge and ideas to transmit a sense of

urgency and enthusiasm to others. If a leader can't get a message across clearly and

motivate others to act on it, then having a message doesn't even matter."

    Gilbert Amelio (Martocchio 48)

According to the interview, Amy Luesse, as the director of Human Resources, believes

she is trying her best to accomplish communication excellence in such aspects as communication

skills as she interviews the candidates for a position. When she sends an email to hire possible

candidates she needs empathy and enthusiasm for the people she works with in her job

environment in order to produce effective communication. Another aspect is to identify how

technology has affected communications, including improved information availability. The third

aspect is to use appropriate communication methods to deliver different kinds of messages in a

    variety of situations (Appendix 2).

Communications is tough and difficult to judge the best form of concern. Amy figured

out that the best forms of communication are to continue communicating constantly with the

employees. Communication is done via email which facilitates the way of communication to hire

employees (Appendix 2). Communication is much more than words and the majority is

nonverbal communication. Their nonverbal communication such as facial expressions, gestures,

eye contact, posture, and even the tone of voice is essential in order to gain confidence when

interviewing a possible candidate for the position hiring (Appendix 1). Also, another important

factor important in nonverbal communication in Human Resources is that the director of Human

Resources when interviewing a possible candidate for the position has to maintain eye contact.

Eyes are one of the best attributes of human expression, because they can be direct and

unidentifiable, as well as show a million different emotions in just one look; but in the whole

interview the eye contact is meaningful to express respect and interest to the theme(Appendix 1).

The job of a Human Resources director involves verbal and nonverbal communication.

Human resources planning is the process by which the management ensures that the right

number of people with the right skills are available at the right time, in the right job, in order to

help the organization achieve its objectives. In other words, Human Resources planning are all

about finding out in advance how many workers are needed to perform the tasks, how many

employees with the required skills are available within and outside the organization, and how is

it possible to fulfill the staffing needs of the organization when needed. Human Resources

planning are not new. It has been practiced by many organizations in the past as well, in order to

ensure that the right person does the right job at the right time (Punnet 33). Also, the job of a

human resource is to never stopped being enthusiastic, with a posture communicating

confidence, appropriate language and non-verbal signals matching with the words as the person

communicates a powerful message. Therefore, it has to be a great communicator that can deliver

the message by developing good communication skills (Appendix 3).

The director of Human Resources guides and manages the overall provision of Human

Resources services, policies, and programs within a small to mid-sized company, or a portion of

the Human Resources function within a large company. The major areas the Human Resources

    director manages can include: recruiting and staffing; organizational departmental planning;

performance management and improvement systems; organization development; employment

and compliance to regulatory concerns regarding employees. In all of this Communication

Excellence is the basis of successfully managing the area and having healthy employee relations

    (Punnet 35).

The basic building block of good communications is the feeling that every human being is

unique and of value. - Mark Twain (Anderson 43).

Communication excellence involves achieving effective communication. Effective

communication develops by motivating the employees, which helps them feel like a part of

business and better communication with employees will increase healthy employee relations.

The link between communication and motivation is particularly important. Good communication

is an important part of motivating employees and in meeting employees social needs. Using

Communication Excellence improves motivation that ensures that everyone is working towards

same company goals, enables employees to be involved in decision-making, and motivates

people by having clear targets set for them and recognizing employee achievements (Ceriello

    73).

Communication is life and to spend life effectively one need to acquire good

communication skills and even more if one wants to reach communication excellence in the field

of Human Resources. The understanding of the meaning as well as the importance of

communication will enable anyone to become aware of its role in achieving success, and

mastering the art of good communication skills helps each person achieve excellence and reach

his fullest potential (Boxall 44). The author of this paper would define Communication

Excellence as the basis of successful relationships, both personally and professionally and the

ability to deliver the message with effectiveness and clearness. Communication Excellence is all

about building up relationships with effectiveness and with the right motivation. (Appendix 1)

    Appendix 1 (Stage: Observation)

Communication Excellence is the basis of successful relationships, bothpersonally and professionally. Communication is much more than words and the

    majority is nonverbal communication.

Their nonverbal communication such as facial expressions, gestures, eye contact, posture, and even the tone of their voices was efficient as they gave confidence to

the observer to express her personal thoughts which accommodate the voiceless

    person in the conversation.

Eyes are one of the best attributes of human expression, because they can bedirect and unidentifiable, as well as show a million different emotions in just one

look; but in this whole conversation the eye contact was meaningful to express

respect and interest to the theme.

Communication excellence is to build up relationships and interact effectivelywith people while respecting their points of view, but also to understand the

importance of nonverbal communication which is necessary to transmit and

    receive a message.

    Appendix 3 (Critique)

He never stopped being enthusiastic, his posture communicated confidence, and his non-verbal signals matched with his words as he communicated a powerful message.

Most of the delivery skills and techniques were effective and helpful for the externaltarget audience. It could have been more effective and understandable if he would of

used visual aids as power point slides. This could have been a better visual aid that would

    have improved the message.

He also used an appropriate language for the audience by articulating the words clearly, sentences were short and easy to understand and rethorical phrases were such as

    repetition.
