Definition of Communication
According to Norman and Summer,
Communication is an exchange of facts, ideas, opinions or
emotions by two or more persons.
According to Keith Davis,
Communication is the process of passing information andunderstanding from one person to another. It is essentially a
bridge of meaning between the people. By using this bridge, a
person can safely cross the river of misunderstanding.

One way Communication
One way communication is characterised by the
absence of feedback from the receiver.
The sender conveys the message and the receiver
has to make out the meaning on his own as there is
no scope for check back.
The best examples of one way communication are
News broadcasts and Radio announcements.

Advantages of One way
Communication
Time saving as large amount of information can beconveyed in a better way.
It permits the sender (speaker or writer) to express tohis level best as his flow of thoughts is hardlyinterrupted in the process.
It is more effective in mass communication.
It also permits the receiver to take the informationaccording to his interests.

Disadvantages of One way
communication
Sometimes the message does not get transmitted
due to the inability of the receiver to understand.
Misunderstandings are too common in one way
communication due to the lack of feedbacks and
counter questioning.
These misunderstandings gives rise to negative
emotions and adversely affect the human relations.

Two way communication
This form of communication is characterised by thepresence of feedback provided by the receiver of themessage.
It is done to ensure that the receiver has understood themessage in he same sense as the sender tends toconvey.
Examples of two way communication are face to faceinterviews, group discussions, telephonic talks onlinechatting etc.

Advantages of Two way communication
Ensures that the communication has taken place.
Ensure transmission of understanding.
Misunderstandings can be removed with immediate
clarification.
It helps maintaining a clear environment for
communication

communication
This form of communication requires more time and
energy.
Sometimes creates conflicts if the two persons
interacting are not of the same opinion.
Sometimes might lead to more of gossip and useless
talks when the people are not communicating
purposefully.

Creates a problem when people are from different
cultures, countries and creeds and slang is different.
Consumes more energy as compared to non verbalcommunication

Formal Communication
This type of communication is structured on the basis
of hierarchy.
It basically deals with the communicational flow
from the superiors to subordinates and vice versa.
It also allows the lateral flow of communication of
message among the colleagues in the organization.

Advantages of Formal Communication.
It passes through line and authority.
Ensures accountability of the executives in charge.
Helps in developing intimate relations between immediateboss and subordinate.
It ensures the authenticity and genuineness of the matter
communicated and the responsibility of the person involved.
It keeps uniformity in the information.

Disadvantages of Formal
Communication
Increases the workload of the managers as all
communication is transmitted through them.
Widens the communication gap between top executivesand lower level.
This adversely affects their relationship.
It dilutes the accuracy of the message while filtering
and colouring at middle level.

Informal Communication
Informal communication takes place outside the
formally prescribed network or channel.
This is spontaneous and off the records and beyond
the organization hierarchy.
It has no set rules and regulations and no particular
direction.
Its most important feature is the GRAPEVINE

Advantages of Informal Communication
Information flow speed is spontaneous and faster than
formal communication.
Information is multidirectional.
It strengthens the social dimensions as it provides a
platform for the employees social gathering.
This form of communication supplements the formal
communication.

Disadvantages of Informal
Communication.
Sometimes carries half truths, rumours, false andfabricated stories.
High chances of distortion
Creates a lot of misunderstanding among theemployees.
Unlike in formal communication, here since there is noresponsibility for communication, hence the responsibleparty for miscommunication cannot be pin pointed.

Intrapersonal Communication
Intrapersonal communication is the internal dialogue
occurring within the mind of an individuals state of mind.
It may be clear or confused depending on the state of themind.
If the mind is troubled, the message will be unclear, vague
and confused.
If the mind is still and at peace, the internal dialogue will be
clear and perceptions will be wide.

Interpersonal Communication
Interpersonal communication is the communication
between two or more persons.
On an average, more than half of the time of any
employee goes in some sort of interpersonal
communication.
It can be both verbal as well as non verbal.

Group Communication
Group is an association of two or more persons who
interact with each other in such a way that
influences each other.
Such type of communication done in a group is
called as group communication.
Groups can be formallike committees, teams etc. or
informal groups in a work place meant for
socializing.

Public Communication
Public communication involves speech by one person
to a large group.
This is one way communication as the speaker gives
speech only and the audience listens only.
Politicalleaders, religious preachers, trade unionsleaders, etc give or participate in public
communication.

Mass Communication
Mass communication is the extension of public
communication.
It is communicating to the public at large scale throughmass medias such as televisions, films, publications etc.
It plays a pivotal role in boosting the image of the
organization and attracting customers.
It requires heavy investments.
