Some definitions

• ITS Station concept is defined by ETSI TC ITS and consist of:– one or more Routers (term under discussion)

– one or more Hosts (term under discussion)

– zero or more Gateways,

– and an internal network to connect these as needed

• Networks used by ITS belong to two domains:– ITS Domain consist of:

• ITS Ad Hoc, e.g. 5.9 GHz /multi-hopping network

• ITS Access, e.g. 5.5 GHz IPv6 access network

– Generic Domain consist of:• Private Access, e.g. fibre network in roadside

• Public Access, e.g. UMTS

• Core network, e.g. the global Internet

Conclusion

• Communication architectures have been a long

international standardisation task.

– Contributions from IEEE and ISO have been essential

• ITS Station concept is important

– Allows implementations ranging from single OBU to highly

complex roadside systems inside the station domain

• We need to be careful to avoid fragmentation of

Standards and reference implementations

– Would delay deployment many years

– Eventually lead to mandated systems (sub-optimal?)

Berlin 26 May 2010 CEN ETSI Workshop 19

• CVIS CALM media: M5 (5.9/5.5 GHz), IR and 3G (UMTS)

• SAFESPOT uses CALM M5 only (5.9 GHz )

• Common trials based on joint Control Channel (CCH)

• Two 5GHz radios enable concurrent traffic

Next stage

• Revision of Router components– Optimize reliability, ease of installation and cost

• CVIS platform extended to support:– preDRIVE/C2C communications

– GeoRoute functions

– ETSI specifications

– Will likely happen in eCoMove project

• This would give future-proof interoperability for CVIS-equipped test sites / FOT sites

Standards overview

• Standardisation status

– Basic set of CALM ISO standards approved and validated in

CVIS. IEEE 802.11p (CALM M5 base) is finally ready as well

– Facilities and application standardisation is started

– Coordination plans between CEN and ETSI has been agreed

– Coordination between DG INFSO and US DoT is ongoing

• New standardisation mandate from EC has created a lot of interest, and is a clear tool to fix challenges.

• EU-US R&D and Standards policy statement signed –CVIS involved in task force.

Berlin 26 May 2010 CEN ETSI Workshop 27

CEN TC278

• The TC has mainly two active WGs

– WG1 EFC: ~10 new standards

– WG12 AV/AEI: New series of EVI

• New WG on cooperative issues established at

last meeting lead by Dr. Schade (Siemens) also

in CVIS Steering committee. Scope is to study

standardisation needs for cooperative systems

• CVIS was actively represented in 2 TC

meetings last year, plus some WG meetings

Berlin 26 May 2010 CEN ETSI Workshop 28

ETSI TC ITS

• ETSI had its first active working year

• Many new WI have been established – partly

overlapping with ISO/CALM and IEEE

• Focus on safety systems, at least initially

• Request for more than 10 STFs are being

processed now

• Several experts from CVIS are involved, and

WG1+WG2 are lead by CVIS partners.

– 5 meetings last year

Berlin 26 May 2010 CEN ETSI Workshop 29

ISO TC204

• ISO TC204 is closely related to CEN TC278

• A new WG17 on nomadic systems including vehicle gateway has been established

• WG16 CALM has finalised all core standards, some extensions like CALM WAVE underway.

• ETSI specialist task force has provided formal test specs for CALM according to ISO/ETSI agreement

• CVIS partners are active - 4 meetings with 3-4 people in each meeting

Berlin 26 May 2010 CEN ETSI Workshop 30

IEEE

• 802.11p finally accepted at expert level,

only high level vote remains

• Expectation is finalised standards end

2010, rolled into full 802.11 in 2011

• IEEE P1609 is upgrading from testing

standard to full standard for 5.9GHz

protocols, same time frame.
