The results are correct, but:• the images are not from the original source• headlines and descriptions for the images have been altered/deleted• original contextual information is ripped away• resized/scaled for website’s own needs• where on the sky is it located?

• keep rich contextual information with the image via a method (XMP) that embeds a text file into the header of any image (JPEG, TIFF, PNG, etc.)

• standardize the way in which EPO/PR astronomical imagery is described (creator, observation, object categories, WCS (sky coordinate) information, etc.) via the AVM (Astronomy Visualization Metadata, see our poster)

• develop online database/archive of frequently updated EPO/PR astronomical imagery and metadata by hooking into observatory databases

• maintain an online service for the public that delivers metadata via unique and innovative search strategies

One example of what VAMP can enable for the “semantic web”…

1. Joe Web-user visits a website that uses a night sky interface to immerse the user in astronomy

2. Navigating the night sky, JW clicks on the region for M51

Hubble

3. Curious about other wavelengths, JWclicks on the thumbnail for the infrared image

Spitzer

4. JW wants more info on infrared light, so he clicks onthe glossary term link.

Fact Guru

5. Needing more information on spiral galaxies, JWclicks the link for the Wikipedia entry.

For EPO/PR imagery products in astronomy – the “pretty pictures” which include data derived images, image collages, diagrams, illustrations, artist conceptions, telescopes, facilities, etc.

• The metadata schema for describing outreach images and the method by which the metadata may be embedded within the image file are defined.

• Embedded metadata are commonly in use in digital photography and the publication industry and the AVM is built upon those existing standards.

• For data-derived images, full World Coordinate System (WCS) tags can be used to describe fully the position, orientation, and scale of the image while allowing for a variety of applications requiring the full coordinate context.

September – December 2007

• AVM metadata definition refined, actively seek community feedback

• Turn the Stellarium “proof of concept” into “full prototype” application

• Support early adopter observatories in tagging images and prepare for ingest of metadata into VAMP

• Develop communication strategies and implement a virtual community of practice website & online discussion board

November 2007

• VAMP Archive and Services development begins at IRSA
