CHHS15/068 Canberra Hospital and Health Services Communicable Diseases Network Australia Creutzfeldt–Jakob Disease Guidelines 2013 Purpose The Communicable Diseases Network Australia approved by the Australian Government of Health provides recommendations for infection prevention and control procedures to minimise the risk of transmission of Creutzfeldt - Jakob disease (CJD) in health care settings. It is a National Guideline with clinical recommendations based on the best scientific evidence available at the time of publication. Creutzfeldt - Jakob disease (CJD) will be used in this document to refer to all forms of classical Creutzfeldt - Jakob disease. Scope All health care providers and facilities should be familiar with these guidelines and adhere to them, so that patients who may have been exposed to CJD have access to appropriate evidence-based health care without discrimination and disadvantage. The application of transmission-based precautions to minimise the risk of transmission of CJD is based on a risk assessment. The tissues or body fluids likely to be exposed during a procedure should be classified according to Section 2.2 (and Table 1) of the guideline and the patient risk category should be identified according to Section 2.3 of the guideline. A risk assessment should then be performed according to Section 2.4 of the guideline. The additional procedures that may apply as a result of the risk assessment are outlined in Section 3 (and Table 2) of the guideline. Page 1 of 2
