PART ONE: FINAL REPORT NARRATIVESection A: Main Achievements

1. Please tell us the top five things that your school has achieved in the School Enterprise Challenge programme. There are no marks for this question; however, your answers to this question help us to understand your school business better. This ISEC activity bonded the students, teachers and the management, like ‘ a thread in the

garland’. It builds leadership skills among the students & teachers. It’s set an example & showed a path in various directions like discipline, initiative, facing

challenges and how to cope up with different situations.

Section B: Business ImplementationTOP TIP!

These questions will give you the chance to show us how you actually implemented your school business. Please refer back to your Business Plan template if you need help to answerthese questions.

2. Operational Plan: How did you actually produce your product/service? Please explain clearly your production process. (10)Our first product was the best example of creating awareness about ‘SAVE PAPERS’ through an innovative business idea.

Product-1 (operational plan)

Notebooks: From the capital raised, we successfully purchased a spiral machine which was used to punch holes in the ‘used’ pages. Later, students put spiral binding spring in these pages. The cover pages were made by the artistic students, designed with cut-outs of pictures from second hand books. Such cut-outs were also used to prepare bookmarks for these notebooks. The covers and bookmarks were designed in order to deliver a social message.i.e Save water,Unity in diversity etc.

1. Entrepreneurship students Raised Capital and worked on the marketing plan of the enterprise which helped them in understanding their theory lessons through practical approach. They got this as a project, which was hence useful for them.Arts students Made notebooks using spiral machine, made attractive cover pages and bookmarks which enhanced in their creativity and knowledge of product specialization in business.

Accounts Students: (Maths and commerce) Worked on accounting the transactions and prepared cash flow projections accordingly. This helped them to learn a lot about financial management and the value of money as an important resource in the business which could be seen through their awareness and caution while using money.

Business management: The students and teachers of business studies worked on proper management principles of the business.

Product 2: Paper craft & additional product

Our second product was the example converting ‘ TRASH INTO TREASURE’ and also how to grab opportunity according to the market demand.

First we collected newspapers, used papers & drawing sheets. Then we applied different paper craft techniques like mashing, folding, 3D origami to make different decorative items like swan, parrot, wall hanging, pen holder, photo frame etc.

*Additional product (paper craft): We conducted a market analysis and got to know about and high demand of various products related to the upcoming Indian festival called ‘Diwali’. Thus, realizing a business opportunity. We discovered and explored this business opportunity – to convert trash into treasure! The additional product was a box which compiled all things required for worshipping the Gods on Diwali as per Indian traditions and values. Hence it had captured a great demand in India. The items placed in the boxes were bought from the local wholesale market at reasonable prices and then redesigned to be placed in the box. Another product was made using old wedding cards by turning them into attractive envelopes.Arts students –

the fine arts students found an amazing way to reuse old boxes to turn them into beautiful reusable boxes for worshipping deities on Diwali. They are also to be credited with the idea of making attractive envelopes reusing old wedding cards.

Commerce students

Decided an appropriate number of products those were to be placed in the boxes so that we have a limited cost incurred.

3. Marketing & Sales: Did you actually sell your product/service to the customers identified on your Market Research? If not, why? Who was your Target Market? (10)As per our business plan our target customers were students, teachers & staff of the school. From the beginning we tried to draw their attention through various promotional strategies which are mentioned below:

The market site was at the heart of the school which helped us to grab the attention of the customers.

Other means of marketing used, before the market was conducted were:

Mouth publicity: the product was marketed in the classes through the word of mouth. Announcements were made in the classes to make students aware.

Notice: blackboards in each classroom were decorated during PTM to display the messages from trash to treasure to visit our market site.

Social networking: the facebook page was kept updated with all the activities at trash to treasure. Whatsapp messages were sent as reminders to the existing buyers and potential buyers before any market was conducted.

Advertisements in morning assemblies: the products were promoted through various captivating skits and acts in the morning assemblies and in breaks at school to keep our customers interested in what we do!

Frequent reminders to previous customers: the previous customers of trash to treasure were kept aware of the activities that were trending at the enterprise. Thus, we took care of staying connected with our old customers.

Attractive offers: attracting new customers was a challenge for us and to do so we introduced new offers and schemes giving promotional gifts along with the products. For example: free envelopes were given with Diwali goodies.

Press release: the market video of trash to treasure was broadcasted on the local news channel named SR and DIGI channels. This helped in creating awareness about the product in the local market and to attract new customers.

Sample display: the sample products were kept not only at the market but also during the announcements in classes so that people could get to know what they are being offered.

Customer care: feedback was taken from the customers about the products and any complaints regarding the product were addressed as soon as possible until the customers were satisfied.

Please tell us about your 4 P’s (Product, Price, Place, and Promotion) now that you actually started your school business.

a. P roduct – What was your product?b. P rice – What price did you sell it at?c. P lace – Where did you sell your product?d. P romotion – How did you promote your product?E.g.Did you hold any launch event?

Product: the products that we chose were notebooks, Papercraft and Diwali Goodies (additional product). Both were chosen as per the ongoing demand in the market.

Product-1: Notebooks

Brand Name: creative practice notebooks.

Customized notebooks were designed as per the requirements of the customers. Design of the notebook for the junior students was colourful & for seniors it was simple but creative. The bookmark was attached with the notebook. The cover page contains logo, price & social message

Product 2: Papercraft

Our papercraft products were made completely by reusing newspapers, old project files, Used drawing sheets and used pages of notebooks. The attractive papercraft products were appreciated by the customers so much that we got many advance orders for them.

Additional product :

Name: Diwali Goodies

Diwali Goodies and envelopes were our additional product for the second market. The boxes were made by art students who reused old cardboard boxes. The envelopes were made by reusing old wedding cards.

Price:

From the begining, it was our prime concern to look into the various aspects before determining price of our product 1 & 2. Our decision to purchase the raw material at wholesale price helped us to keep the price reasonable. We also cut short our indirect expenses (tea & refreshment, get together etc.) to reduce the per unit cost of our product.

Notebooks: The price of the notebooks depended on the number of pages (i.e. 250 pages notebook @ Rs. 250).

Paper craft: The price of the goods depended on the size, material and design (i.e. wall hanging @ Rs. 100 each).

Diwali Goodies: the number of items in the boxes was fixed and so the price was also fixed (i.e. box with 29 items @ Rs. 150 each )

*Our customers expected the price range as it was quite fair & reasonable.

Place:

The school enterprise challenge being our first innitive in its kind, we decided to keep our market within the school premises. It was a good decision as we got a ready market & it also saved our time & cost. The products were sold at the school during parents teacher meetings.

Promotion:

The promotional strategies used for both products varied:1. Notebooks: the target market of this product was students. The younger kids of the school were

attracted by the cover pages of the notebooks which were specifically designed for the purpose. The elder kids however chose subtle designs and were attracted towards the bookmarks. Promotions were made in assemblies and gatherings vocally.

production readily available with us the students who were supposed to produce these products weren’t able to miss the classes as their exams approached and this is why they were unable to produce much quantity of these products.

The use of spiral machine required expertise and training but the students were not used to such machines and that is why, they faced a challenge while dealing with such machines.

Another challenge that we faced was that of thinking of new and innovative use of paper in the form of paper craft.

Another challenge was presuming the acceptance of our additional item as we decided to go for an additional product, considering upcoming festive season.

How we overcame them:

The idea used to manage time was that of using an optional period for the production activities. Students took chances and completed production targets within the given time limit.

The students were trained in order to make them more efficient in using spiral machines

Market research was an innovative way of finding out solutions.

We came up with a new and innovative product (Diwali material boxes) keeping the trending demand in mind as per the ongoing festive season and hence it was readily accepted by the customers.

Teachers: The whole activity was an eye opener for the teachers & they realized that the “good

managers are not born, they are sculpted by proper, practical teaching and training process. There is

no age for learning whether it’s a student or a teacher”. It created a positive impact on the staff

wheather they were involved directly or indirectly.

Students: According to the social norms students generally prefer ‘White collar job’ as a secured

carrier option. Thanks to the school enterprise challenge to enlighten the students to see the better

carrier option in the business & serve for the society. Their feelings are translated in the following

lines:

What we did enhanced our practical knowledge,

Taught us to make market and manage.

But the most important thing we got to learn,

Was learning to function and learning to earn!!

Customers: Customer is the king of market & we ere lucky enough to have students, parents & staff as the customers. They appreciated & accepted our business idea of ‘TRASH TO TREASURE’ They were really impressed to see the creativity & innovation in all the products made by the students. The selection of the products could satisfy their needs.

pictures (if you have any). (5)

Our whole business was actually based on reusing and recycling paper so that environment could be benefitted. We have reduced the wastage of paper and reused them in every possible way. Even old wedding cards and boxes were reused to make envelopes and Diwali goodies. We also encouraged our customers for reusing our boxes so that we could reduce wastage as much as possible. The unused pages of old notebooks which were usually trashed… were now reused by our business for producing new, attractive notebooks.

10. Profit: How did you raise your start-up capital? What approaches did you take to maximize your profits? What would you do with your profits? (5)We raised the capital by conducting second hand book shop in the beginning of the session. The profits were maximised by introducing innovative marketing strategies to keep customers engaged and attract new customers. We were very careful about direct and indirect expenses and we also tried to minimize our wastage, to maintain our expected profit margin. We have kept our earned profit to reinvest in the business activity for next year, as we also believe in social service, so we will use a part of our profit for social cause.

Section F: Business Development and SustainabilityTOP TIP!

A sustainable business is one that demonstrates the ability to continue for an indefinite period of time.11. Business Development - What are your future plans for your enterprise? Please provide specific

examples (200 words max). As an example, think about what other products you want to develop, etc.(5)

The Trash to Treasure enterprise was built keeping in mind the perpetual succession. The product line chosen is pretty vast and unexplored in the local markets and hence can be developed well. A few products that could be added to our range could be stencils, home decor items and showpieces made from paper mash. Another development which would be important to notice has been planned as the strategic expansion of our market reach from our school to the local market. As the competition, shall increase, we shall also work upon improving the quality of the product. Product diversification may as well be a possible option to expand the business wherein we can enter new markets with new products. An important development that we have thought of is to change from a manufacturing concern to service providers through our first product of notebooks. We understood that arranging for old papers is a cumbersome and time consuming job and hence we will now ask the students in the schools to bring the leftover pages of the used notebooks as per their requirement themselves and provide them the service of spiral binding.
