HECO’s commitment to supporting Catholic education boils down to identify-ing core beliefs and values and making them a priority. “Parents send their chil-dren to Xavier for its integration of core values and strong academic standards,” said Shepard. “This combination provides students today with the tools needed for future success, both personal-ly and professionally.”

HECO Chairman, Matt Rissi, also noted that the Xavier Foundation Business Appeal is instrumental in funding an excellent, competitive education for Xavier High School students. “HECO is a longstanding supporter of the Foundation due to its superior allocation of resources and implementation of strategic initia-tives. We’re very proud to support Catho-lic education and the Xavier community.”

Donna Garland, owner, Nesper Sign Ad-

vertising, Inc., and Max Smith, executive vice president, Risk Management Divi-sion, TrueNorth Companies, will serve as campaign chairs of the Xavier Founda-tion’s 2013 Business Appeal. Garland and her husband Phil are members of St. Pius X parish and have two children, Thomas

(X07) and Nicholas (X10). Smith and his wife Kathy are also members of St. Pius X parish and have four children, Megan (X09), Ryan (X09), Lauren (X14) and Erin (Regis 7th grade).

The Xavier community is grateful to the metro-area businesses that annu-ally support this appeal. Businesses that participate in the Appeal are recognized in a business donor list published in the Cedar Rapids Gazette; a special donor list published in all Catholic parish bulletins in the metro area; and the Xavier Founda-tion Annual Report to Donors.

Xavier Foundation Business Appeal 2013

Located in Cedar Rapids, Highway Equipment Company (HECO) is the leading manufacturer of Hi-Way deicing spreaders and road maintenance equipment and New Leader crop nutrient applica-tors, with a customer base ranging from growers to agricultural retailers, and municipalities to contrac-tors – and everything in between.

The company’s goal to build quality equipment and meet the highest expectations and standards carries over to the organizations and causes they support. The 2013 Xavier Foundation Business Appeal will mark the 28th consecutive year High-way has supported Catholic education, in particu-lar, Xavier High School.

“The company’s decision to support Catholic edu-cation is based on our belief that successful young leaders develop from top-ranking institutions like Xavier,” said Rocki Shepard, president and CEO of HECO.

Donna Garland and Max Smith will lead nearly 80 volunteers with the mission to raise $125,000 to benefit Xavier High School. A campaign launch will take place the first week in February. Also serving in leadership roles for the cam-paign are team captains: Mike Boucha-rd, TransAmerica and Bouchard Home Improvements; Tom Ekland (L78), Seltec Sales; Mike Esker, Coldwell Banker Hedges Realty; Kevin Giles, TransAmerican; Duane Jasper, Ruffalo-CODY; Jeff Kaiden, (L72), Principal Financial Group; Jim McPartland (R75), TrueNorth; Becky Picard (L66).

Xavier juniors Grace Winker, Mary Es-ker and Kelsi Fuller (pictured on left) were able to push past the stress of preparing for semester finals and or-ganize an Advent Food Drive for the Xavier

High School community. The drive, which lasted one week, yielded nearly 1,700 non-perishable items including the food bank’s most needed items such as tuna, soup, canned pasta, peanut butter and jelly, spaghetti sauce, rice, baking mixes, and toilet paper. The items will be distributed to the Metro Catholic Outreach Food Bank in Cedar Rapids, whose needs drastically increase around the holidays.

“Bank Iowa is committed to helping make Iowa communities better places to live and work. Lumear “Bud” and Margaret Netolicky

One day last spring Margaret Netolicky called the Foundation office saying that she had some stock she and her late husband Bud had owned for many years and she was considering gifting it to Xavier. While she was ready to make the donation, Margaret was hopeful the price of the stock would reach a level that would make her gift to Xavier at least $30,000. The price was close, but not quite there. The young professionals on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange had nothing on Margaret, who at 90 years of age became a diligent observer of the market. She care-fully watched the market and called regularly to report the price and keep the Foundation abreast of the status of her gift. Then came the day we had all been waiting for… the stock reached the long awaited $30,000 value, Margaret called to report the good news to the Foundation office and after a brief discussion of whether or not to “let it ride,” it was decided the prudent decision was to make the gift and start helping Xavier students right away with the generous gift.

Margaret’s gift was an incredible donation and investment in the future of Catholic education. It was also a tribute to the memory of her husband Bud. While Margaret had a history with Catholic educa-tion as a graduate of St. Angelus Academy in Carroll, IA (now Kuemper Catholic High School), Bud did not have an opportunity to attend Catholic school grow-ing up in West Branch. Margaret and Bud met at a dance in Cedar Rapids and were married in 1944 at St. Ludmila’s Church. They spent many of their 66 years of marriage together as members of St. Pius X

parish. As members of the parish, they contributed to the campaign to build Xavier High School. Mar-garet recalls that Bud had been so proud of Xavier when it was built. He became an avid follower of Xavier sports, and was thrilled with successes of Xavier athletes from the very beginning of the school. Before his death, Bud told Margaret he wanted to make sure to include the Xavier Foundation in their will.

While working with her financial advisors Margaret realized that by making a gift during her lifetime using stock that had greatly ap-preciated in value, she could avoid paying capital gains tax and receive the benefit of a tax deduction for the current value of the gift. In addition to the financial benefits of the donation, the Xavier Foun-dation was thrilled to be able to thank Margaret for her gift during her lifetime and to help her honor Bud’s memory.

The Xavier Foundation is most grateful to Margaret and Bud for their generous lifetime gift, and proudly welcomed them as mem-bers of the Heritage Society this year. These lifetime gifts to the Heritage Society are added to the Foundation’s endowment, pre-serving the principal and using the interest earned each year for the current needs of Xavier stu-dents. These endowment gifts benefit Xavier students today and for generations to come. If you are interested in learning more about how you can benefit Xavier with a special gift either during your lifetime or as part of your estate, please contact Jody Ruff at 319-378-4571.

The University of Iowa College of Den-tistry currently boasts six Xavier High School alumni working toward their degrees. While it has yet to be confirmed that this is a record for the college, it is, without doubt, a noteworthy number. The College of Dentistry enrolls nearly 320 students in its DDS program annually. Students come from all 50 states and more than 100 other countries. Among them are Xavier alumni and first year students Katie Arp (X08), Megan Penticoff (X08), and Sara Swanke (X09); second year student, Nicholas Westlund (X07); third year student, Katie Nagel (X06); and fourth year student, Jill McDermott (X04). Busy as they are, they’ve noticed familiar faces around the College; Penti-coff jokes,“I did know there was a Xavier takeover in the college of dentistry. Go Saints!”

The UI College of Dentistry is the only dental school in the nation to offer ad-vanced education in all dental specialties as well as a residency in hospital dentistry. Notorious for being a tough program, the Xavier alums find themselves thriving in the challenging environment, readily attributing their foundation for success to time spent at Xavier High School.

Says Westlund, “Xavier did an excellent job of teaching me how to manage my time effectively, which has been a good skill to have in dental school.” Swanke agreed recalling, “My study skills were built in before I even entered The Uni-versity of Iowa as an undergrad. The fact that I knew how to succeed academically gave me a huge leg up in applying to and being accepted into dental school.” McDermott added, “Xavier prepared me in many ways for the dentistry program. I was exceptionally prepared academically. More importantly though, my education at Xavier helped shape me into the clinician I am today. Going to the dentist is usually not an experience people enjoy but I have learned qualities like compassion, kind-ness, respect for others, and responsibil-ity to help others, that all stemmed from my experiences at Xavier, St. Pius X, and from my parents.”

The College has a long-standing commit-ment to serving the dental-health needs of all Iowans. Among many services, the College offers a Geriatric Mobile Unit, which brings equipment and expertise to nursing homes and care facilities, and its Special Care Clinic, which specializes in providing dental care for special-needs

patients. This aspect of serving others, ingrained in the students from day one at Xavier, resonates among the alumni. States Penticoff, “As cliche as it sounds, I genuinely am looking forward to helping my patients and hopefully putting a smile on their faces.” McDermott emphatically agrees noting, “There are a lot of patient that come to the college of dentistry that have nowhere else to turn and need your help getting them out of pain. The first time they show me a big smile when they have been hiding their teeth for so long, that’s a really rewarding day.”

Arp may be new to the program, but it hasn’t damped her enthusiasm or her de-sire to serve: “Being such a new student to dental school I haven’t had a lot of direct exposure in the field, but I cannot wait to apply what I have learned and experienced so far from the classroom and observation. I most look forward to being able to in-teract with a variety of patients on a daily basis and doing all I can to help maintain and improve their oral and overall health.”

While these alumni provide a terrific example to current Xavier High School students, their passion for working hard and serving others is an important remind-er for us all.

We Remember Alumni & Friends

More than 1 billion people in the world do not have access to clean drinking water.

In March 2013, Xavier alumna and Benedictine College junior Lynette Cavin (X10), will travel to Tegucigalpa, Honduras with the “Water With Blessings” ministry. “Water With Blessings” distributes water filtration systems to families in need. To date, the ministry has provided safe drinking water via the Sawyer Point One Filtration System to more than 1,200 households. Millions of people in developing countries, mostly children, die every year from water-related diseases. The clean water initiative will save the lives of people in Honduras, will stimulate the local economy, and will further unite the community.

You are invited to support Lynette and this important mission through prayers and financial support. Donations may be made at my.benedictine.edu/sibcwater

Xavier To Honor Grandparents on March 13, 2013

Grandparents are the critical link between the promise of the future and the wis-dom of the past. Grandparents Day at Xavier High School is a time to recognize the Christian vocation of being a grandparent and honor these special individuals. Grandparents play a particularly important role in today’s society including the role of spiritual guide. The unique relationship and bond grandparents often forge with their grandchildren provides an opportunity for teaching the young people of today to value and achieve spiritual rewards such as love, tolerance, compassion, reverence, joy, peace, gentleness, faith and kindness.

On March 13, 2013 Xavier will honor Grandparents with a light breakfast and social followed by a visit with Xavier Principal, Tom Keating before uniting with their grandchildren for Mass.

In 2012, more than 300 grandparents and great-grandparents from six different states gathered for the celebration.

The light breakfast and social will begin at 8 a.m. on March 13. All grandparents of Xavier High School students are invited to join in the event.

For more information about Grandparents Day, contact the Xavier Foundation at 319-378-4571 or [email protected]
