Thank you to my committee: Vivian Molloy, Peg Long, Stephanie, Mike and Rachel Wagner and Suzanne Braun, who even though she could not attend, helped so much with the advertising and promotion of the event. A special thank you to April, Danielle and Kim for appropriately decorating their attire with game themes and Chef John for the great lasagna.

We had approximately 60 adults and children in attendance and some of the games went on until almost 11:00 p.m. I didn't play the game Bob Gamble was hosting but he literally had people falling off their chairs and onto the table. I truly appreciate the support of so many people that made this event successful. Isn't NERYC a great club!?!

Wow! March is finally here. It’s time to get that boat ready for a new season at NERYC! I always look forward to March with a goal to get my boat in the water by tax day. It always helps to have a little shake down before that real Shake Down Cruise happens. With very little snow and great weather, the fleet should look to be in fine shape this year. Wax on... wax off! Don’t forget our Birthday Night on March 9th. It’s one of the advantages of getting a year older. Have a drink on NERYC. The Sailing Seminar on March 17th will show us how to make better times around the race course amongst other things. It will be great to have Kristin Berry back again this year as our guest speaker at the event. And, don’t forget our Murder Mystery Night on March 24th. It’s always a hit and one event not to miss. Look for our new live calendar in the Waterline and on the website: http://neryc.com/pages/NERYC_Calendar.htm. If you have a suggestion for an event, please shoot me an email or call me at 302-494-6631. Let’s make it a great boating season.

I am looking forward to our 2012 boating season, and seeing you at NERYC. I’ve been busy this winter developing my “teak” working skills. We’ve had some great social events in the first two months of 2012 with excellent attendance by club members, and you can expect more fun events during the rest of the year. I am sure that the upcoming Murder Mystery Dinner Theater (Cecilstock) on March 24th will be a smash hit. Please plan to officially kick off our 2012 season at NERYC by attending our Opening Day ceremonies. Our Margaritaville party will start at 6 pm on Friday, May 4th, where we will have a DJ for your entertainment pleasure. Our Opening Day Ceremony will start at 4 pm on Saturday, May 5th (also Kentucky Derby Day). For the official Opening Day ceremony, we will be looking for donated appetizers and desserts for our members and visitors to enjoy. We have some excellent cooks at NERYC, and our visitors have been heard to compliment the food prepared by our members. Will you create the dish that gets rave reviews? In addition, our restaurant team will be cooking up some great dining options for after the ceremony, which you can enjoy in the clubhouse as you watch the Kentucky Derby. Suzanne Braun does an outstanding job of compiling our Opening Day Booklet, and we look forward to your support for Opening Day weekend. As you will see in a future email, Suzanne will be asking if you would like to place an ad. When you buy an ad for the booklet, the proceeds are used to offset the costs of our Opening Day festivities. Please contact Lady Karen (484-433-4501) if you would like to help with one of the following roles for Opening Day: 1 – coordinate an activity for kids (post ceremony), 2 - coordinate the donated food from members, 3 – provide decoration strategy for our Margaritaville party, 4 – act as club event photographer for Margaritaville Party and/or Opening Day, or 5 – help out at the registration desk on Opening Day. Your help would be greatly appreciated! As always, if you have any questions, comments, or recommendations, let me know.

The Membership Committee is working hard organizing the Open House event to be held on Sunday April 22nd from 2-4. We have started to get the word out, using flyers, postcards and adverts in boating magazines etc. Mike Wagner is doing a great job with our limited budget, targeting a wide area of potential members. The Committee is reviewing types of memberships that will attract new members but remaining consistent with retaining our current membership. The Committee is looking at different water oriented activities. Kayaking is one such activity. Contact David Ferguson at [email protected] if you are interested in or want more details about, kayaking at the Club. If you have an activity you would like to have at the Club, please email me at [email protected] What can each of you do to recruit and retain membership? Please hand out 1 flyer for Open House, Sail Camp and an NERYC trifold to a friend or business in your area. They can be found in the office or in the Club Lobby or email me. Bring a guest to an event or to dinner and say hello to folks you haven’t seen at the Club before. Most of all have fun! Thank you.

Winter Land Cruise While the exceptionally warm winter we’ve been enjoying in the mid-Atlantic area has everyone itching to get back out on the water earlier than ever, that pesky groundhog in Pennsylvania saw its shadow on February 2nd, so we may have to wait just a bit longer. Fortunately, we’ve had some fun events at NERYC this month to help pass the time. Fleet Captain Ginny Somers kicked off the 2012 cruising season with a ‘Land Cruise’ in the protected and familiar environs of the Commodore’s ballroom on Saturday night. Upon arrival, all cruisers were given numbered cards, which put everyone into small random teams for tackling the evening’s first game - a questionnaire that tested the group’s knowledge on local Chesapeake Bay, boating facts and NERYC lore which was quite fun. The team of Bob Brechter, Stephanie Wagner, Katie Kalowinski and April Conway prevailed in that feat over the other teams, winning a gift certificate from the restaurant. (Just so EVERYONE knows, NERYC is located in the town of North East - TWO WORDS. The river in front of the club is the NORTHEAST river – one word. I didn't listen to my team, so I was quite popular with them when the results were read).

Chef John prepared some delicious lasagna that was enjoyed by all, followed by the rest of the evening’s events of a wide variety of board games, cards, and wild camaraderie. From the more cerebral feats of Scrabble, RummiKub and Dominos, to a large group who turned a game of “spoons” into a contact sport, a good time was had by all.

Our Juniors sequestered themselves upstairs for their own games followed by a dance off under the disco ball. One of the great things about events like these is you always find out interesting things about other club members that you may not have known. I’m sure all the participants have their own little pearls they picked up, and I’m willing to share mine; I learned that Steve Somers is such a competitive guy that he once called up the manufacturer of “RummiKub” for clarification on game rules he was sure he was right on (and found out, unfortunately, that Ginny was right after all - ouch!). While it didn’t work out as he expected, this competitive spirit and affinity for rules are key attributes for the role of tactician in sailboat racing, so if you’re looking for crew this season - get Steve on your list. I also learned that Joanne Veater is getting a little jealous of the time that Nigel is spending with his “mistress” - the Kalmar Nyckel, the Tall Ship of Delaware.. Unfortunately, the lure of painting the bathroom is just never going to be as exciting as training new volunteers to sail this 17th century square-rigged ship, so maybe someone can recommend a good painter to Joanne? One more thing - I heard we have at least one boat re-naming event to look forward to this Spring when Mike Norman settles on something new for his Catalina 27. As Van Downing pointed out, there’s always an excuse for a party at NERYC, and we assured Mike we’d help him do it right in NERYC fashion. Big thanks to Ginny Somers and her team for a very fun evening that will hopefully become an annual event to keep us all active and connected during the non-boating months.

While we wait patiently for spring, warm weather and sunny days so that we can start to work on our boats, we occupy our spare time with some play and some learning. The play time was had a few weeks ago when we ran our annual 3 Sheets to the Wind fun regatta. The learning part will come in a few weeks t our annual sail race seminar. Additionally the committee continues to pre-pare for the 2012 season of sailing activities which are all coming up soon: our summer sailing camps (we ex-pect close to 300 registrants this year), spring club rac-ing and the Invitational Regatta.

As you can see from the 3 sheets to the wind photos a great time was had by all. The competition was stiff again this year with the power boaters winning by a thread. The juniors fielded their own teams, with Iain Shand taking home the gold. We had 74 adults and 19 youngsters in attendance. We raised over $900 for the junior program, that will go towards boats and supplies for this years season.

Back by popular demand after last years sell out event, Kristen Berry will return to speak at our sail race semi-nar on Saturday March 17th. This year the course con-tent will encompass the topic of ‘Shifting Gears on the Race Course’, or how to get around the course a faster. Kristen will focus in on improving starts, tacks, mark roundings and acceleration. All the things skippers and crew members will want to learn. This course is not just for seasoned racers, if you think you might like to get involved in sailing, this is a great way to get started. So whether you are a seasoned racer, skipper or crew, jun-ior or senior, this course will have something for every-one. Reserve your spot by registering via the website today.

An urgent and important item on our agenda is how to set the fleet splits for this season. At issue is exactly how we divide our fleets equitably enough to keep our racing fun but competitive, while encouraging participa-tion for all skill and interest levels. I am open to sug-gestions on we accomplish this and I would welcome your input. Please feel free to submit your ideas to me via email or give me a call.

I look forward to seeing you all at the sail race seminar.
