President Annual Report
I wish to notify that I will be retiring as president of Raleigh KL at the end of this month.
This is as pre-empted during my re-election at Gopeng last year.
The Committee reached the consensus that with just two months remaining for this term, a
new president will be elected in June in the upcoming AGM.
I wish to extend my thanks to all the people who have made these two years a fulfilling
and exciting period of my life, especially the Committee, the members, the seniors,
Raleigh UK, the Asian Raleigh groups, our affiliates and sponsors.
Looking back, there was no shortage of wonderful times in Raleigh KL. Very few
moments were without smiles and laughter. The Facebook pictures speak for themselves,
ignoring the questionable poses.
What makes me glad is that the smiles were also carried on the faces of our members and
friends. I hope Raleigh has brought meaning and joy to them as well.
The rare occasions I frowned were no less good for the soul. They included the times when
we made some difficult decisions in terms of direction. We held steadfast to the long term
purpose of sending people on expedition, hence our rebuilding efforts focused more on
increasing capacity for this. Our interest was for the future.
By hosting the Asia Regional Conference, the chance came for a new generation of
members to be eye-witnesses of Raleigh's amazing heritage. We took the far-sighted
approach of equipping young potential leaders. We developed skills important for Raleigh
KL's functions and made human capital investments, as termed by the previous treasurer.
Like all investments, there are risks and returns, some of which are long term and even
unforeseeable. We did our due diligence in filtering the best candidates with the most
complete information of the situation at decision time.
In any case, I believe the best use of money is in people. Investing in people includes
putting faith that they will make good out of the investment in due time, moreso in a
voluntary setting. And should history find that the organisation did not benefit directly
from the investment, we still fulfill the goal of youth development for the Raleigh-ians
concerned.
To this end, we pursued sustainability and tightened our belts to live within our means, in
order to afford these opportunities. We also sought creative ways to offer value-adding

activities to our members. As a result, we still owe Nomad Adventure several man hours
from our exchange for preferential rates on their services, said with a tinge of humour.
Goodwill forms the basis of our relationships, and I hope the ones we have with Nomad,
Lafuma, Integricity, and Westcoast continue on to the next decade.
The brotherhood with the UK and Asian Raleigh groups has also developed in recent
times. Special mention of Raleigh HK, who has been an inspirational older sibling. The
sheer magnitude and professionalism of the Mountain Marathon opened the eyes of our
observers many times over.
We have since adopted the new logo from Raleigh UK in favour of a common future.
Raleigh may have a new sexier face, but behind the curves, its solid essence lives on.
As I move on to lesser things in life, I naturally ponder back about the Raleigh people I
have met in these years.
People in Raleigh constitute a rare breed, but Raleigh is more than a private exclusive
club. It is open to all backgrounds and nationalities, all walks of life and ages. As a host
country
beneficiary of expedition, I feel compelled to share this opportunity, and in doing so, I
have personally met some of the most interesting and amazing people through Raleigh.
One of them is the first president of IMU's swimming club. Another is a founding member
of the Pharmaceutical Volleyball Club (PVC) at Nottingham University. Still more are
young entrepreneurs, student leaders in religious fellowships, sporting and adventure
clubs, community and environmental causes, as well as youth delegates representing the
country at international level.
Indeed there is no shortage of talent being attracted to Raleigh, and many of the young
people are already becoming leaders and pioneers in their respective communities. Others
take the world as their oyster, tracing the path less travelled.
Late developers in Raleigh are no less diamonds in the making. In the right time, Raleigh
and expedition will unlock those talents and inspire them to be all they can be. I say this
with confidence as I have seen it in others and in myself.
In these 22 months, 29 young people took that chance, passing through the doors of
Raleigh KL to participate in an expedition.
These young people have constructed mini hydroelectric dams and gravity water systems

in poor villages. They have built libraries, set up kindergartens and amused rural kids.
They have gone off the beaten track, witnessed the raw beauty of nature and dwelled in
some of the most remote places on earth. In challenging themselves out of life's routine,
they have made a difference in their lives and the lives of others.
And so, the many little things the Committee has done has been for this purpose. Every
activity has been about spreading the word, passing the baton, and extending the
opportunity.
Special regards to the Committee of the current and last terms, all of whom I have known
as friends since before joining the Committee. Almost all of them just turned 21 in these
two years, something I have to pinch myself about now and then, based on the remarkable
things they have achieved.
Some of their greatest achievements include managing the Raleigh Asia Regional
Conference and turning monthly meets into member-driven outdoor activities. They
demonstrate that young people should not be looked down upon for their youth.
Voluntary service is at many times a thankless job, where passion and patience are often
inversely correlated and without immediate tangible rewards. But the basic karma of
expedition applies. Those who make the most out of every opportunity will gain more out
of each.
Note of thanks too for the seniors who have helped in support, feedback, networking and
encouragement. Special mention of Max Razak of Belize 1C (1984), the first known
Malaysian venturer, and his wife Intan, also an ex-venturer. Their children may well
become the first second-generation of Malaysian venturers on a Raleigh expedition.
Then there are those just beyond our shores who visited KL during the Regional
Conference in November. One of them is Peter Cornthwaite from Hong Kong, who as a
teenage venturer sailed with the ship Zebu on a four month expedition in the Pacific in
1985. The ex-venturers of 5, 10, 15, 25 years ago from Sabah, Hong Kong, China and
Singapore are still involved in some ways or other with Raleigh, exemplifying that Raleigh
is indeed for life.
Those who had gone before still leave footprints for new people to follow. The winds of
time may cover the prints and shift the sand. And if there were no fresh footprints, there
may never be new people.
As the founder of Forbes Magazine once said: "Search and you will find that at the base
and birth of every great organisation was an enthusiast, a man consumed with earnestness

of purpose, with confidence in his powers, with faith in the worthwhileness of his
endeavours."
Raleigh KL needs more enthusiasts. Raleigh KL needs many more footprints.
I guess stepping down as president means I will no longer be the official mascot of Raleigh
KL. However you will still find me wearing my Raleigh t-shirts and crocs.

society has thus followed and will be making the following amendments:
First Amendment

Lumpur (Raleigh International Kuala Lumpur Society) hereinafter referred to as
Raleigh KL.
New Article 1 on Name of the Society
1.1 This society shall be known as Pertubuhan Raleigh Kuala Lumpur (Raleigh
Kuala Lumpur Society) hereinafter referred to as Raleigh KL.
Second Amendment
Old Article 4 on Logo
4.1 The logo in navy blue consists of the words Pertubuhan Raleigh International
Kuala Lumpur with the symbol of the globe forming the dot of the letter i in
the word Raleigh.

The word Raleigh is taken after the great British explorer, poet and soldier, Sir
Walter Raleigh; whilst the word International illustrates the worldwide coverage
of all expeditions run by Raleigh International. The navy blue colour is chosen
because the original expedition was carried out on a ship sailing across the
oceans.
New Article 4 on Logo
4.1 Our first logo consists of the letter R with the word Raleigh placed vertically at the
spine of the letter. This logo is to be used for less corporate materials such as campaigns
and fundraising.
4.2 Our second logo consists of the word Raleigh with another word Raleigh placed
vertically at the spine of the letter R. This logo is to be used for more corporate materials
such as stationeries and letters.
4.3 The strapline Get out there will be placed together with the logos when
appropriate.
4.4 Both logos are in green (colour palette pantone 355).
Registrar of Societies (ROS)
1. I have prepared a guideline for matters pertaining to the Registrar of Societies. A
guideline has been prepared for the Annual General Meeting statement and for
constitution amendments. They will be passed down to the next secretary 1.
2. We do not have soft copies of Annual General Meeting minutes, financial
statements and any other formal documents that have been handed to ROS before
2007. In future, should we need those documents; we will need to buy them from
ROS for RM2 per sheet.
3. In future, it is recommended that the secretary keeps a hard and soft copy of any
formal documents.
Registrar of Youth (ROY)
The committee thought that we were required to register with the Registrar of Youth
(ROY). However, this matter has been clarified with the ROY and we no longer need to do
so. The following is an explanation of the situation.
Raleigh KL P.O. Box 13521 50812 Kuala Lumpur Malaysia
[email protected] www.raleighinternational.org.my
Pertubuhan Raleigh International Kuala Lumpur is a NGO registered
with the Malaysian Registrar of Societies (Reg. No. 1212).
1. The Act
On December 2007, the Act 668 was established stating that youth societies were
required to register with ROY. Later, it was added that youth societies that were
registered with ROS were also required to register with ROY. ROS would
automatically register its youth societies with ROY. The dateline was 31
December 2008. Nonetheless that dateline has been extended to create a leeway
for the youth societies that may have other matters to tend to before they are able
to register with ROY. That means:
i. we do not need to manually register with ROY, and
ii. if we were eligible to register with ROY, ROS would have done so
for us and our records will be with ROY
2. Benefits of being registered with ROY
First, we will be recognized as a national society. Second, our society will be
given RM3000 should be want to open another branch in Malaysia. Third, our
youth members, will be allowed to obtain loans from ROY.
3. We Lack Criteria
Unfortunately, we only qualify for two criteria (b and c) out of three:
a. Our society must contain the word youth or a word with similar meaning
b. All members must be between 15 to 40 years of age, and
c. Have the objective to carry out activities for youth
So in a nut shell, ROS has not registered us with ROY for that purpose and we are not
eligible to do so unless we incorporate the word youth into the name of our society.
Secretary 1 Handover notes
Hard copy files and documents relevant to the secretary 1 position from previous terms
have been sorted. Soft copy handover notes from the previous terms have been combined.
Hopefully, this will make it easier for the secretary 1 of the next term to carry out her
duties.

It is recommended that the next secretary creates a standard method of filing so that it can
be referred to easily by future committees.
My Experience
It has always been nice being in the committee. It was inspiring to be amongst determined,
capable and fun individuals such as my colleagues. I would have preferred leaving
knowing that I have contributed more to the committee and to Raleigh. Unfortunately, I
had my personal difficulties to cope at the start of the term and so did not do much. But
ever since things improved for me this year I have been trying my best to contribute more
to the committee (hope I helped). And during that process, that old Raleigh feeling came
back to me and Im all for Raleigh once again!
Being part of an active organization has helped me realize my strengths and weaknesses.
Ive also learned a lot from our President Shih Chung and my fellow committee members.
I have also learned the skill of managing and balancing my responsibilities and time. I am
continually inspired by the people in Raleigh and love the fact that there is such an
organization that helps us keep in touch with nature, people, the world and ourselves. So
thank you for the experience!
I also think that its great that committee members are able to engage in ad organize
activities beyond the scope of our post which further provides us with a variety of
experiences. I hope in future it remains the same. And to those people who have not yet
been in the committee, I suggest that you give it a go!

Secretary II Annual Report
The constitution stated that,
14.3 The Secretary II shall be responsible for and maintain the membership register
containing particulars such as name, date of registration, identity card number, age,
profession, date and place of birth. Name and address of employer, if any, and address and
contact number of every number.
During this term, there were altogether 40 new members, 3 life members and 40 old
members who renewed their membership. In total, we have 83 members this term. The
breakdown of the members is depicted below:
New Members
The new members consist of mainly Venturer Memberships which were acquired mainly
after each Introduction Weekend that was carried out during this term. The registrations
and payments were done during monthly meetings, most Introduction Weekend Projects
and through venturers casual meeting with committee members. 6 new memberships were
acquired during the Tahan Expedition that was organized in March 2008. There are also a
minority of new Associate memberships.
Life Members
There were 4 life members.
Membership Renewal
The membership renewals consist mainly of Venturer and Post-Expedition Memberships.
According to the constitution, item 14.3 states that the Secretary II is responsible for
maintaining the membership register. I have done so by either directly receiving
membership forms from the members or through the help of other committee members. An
Access Membership Database had been set up, compiling membership lists of previous
years.
Membership sign-up and renewal fluctuated throughout the year, with highest number
during AGM 08/09. Monthly Meetings had an average of 2 to 3 membership sign-up and
renewal.

Official polo shirts had been issued to all new members, except for 4 new members
register for Mountain Marathon, who have not collected the shirts yet. In conjunction with
the change of logo, a new membership card was created.
Unfortunately our activities had attracted mainly Chinese youths, although we are in a
multicultural society. Therefore, I would like to suggest more road shows and recruitment
drives targeting various races in this country.
It is my pleasure to work with the passionate, self-less and vibrant committee this term.
They were always there to share my burden when I was tied up with other commitment. I
am also grateful to the guidance of the President, Mr Loh Shih Chung. For all those who
did not hesitate to renew their memberships, or joined in as new members, or commit as a
lifetime member, I hope the Raleighs spirit is always within them. Get Out There!
Thank you.

Background
When I was first approached to serve in the Raleigh KL committee, I did have some reservations about the role I was about to take on. Nevertheless, looking back, the
experience has been extremely rewarding. Although I came from an accounting
background, I was still lacking in practical experience of full set accounting. I would
especially like to thank Shih Chung for all his help and guidance throughout this time.
Hope for the future
As the Treasurer does play vital role for Raleigh KL to function as an organization, I hope
that systems and procedures with regard to all monetary transactions be documented and
effectively implemented across all Raleigh KL activities. Such an implementation would

enable a more effective and efficient delivery system to our members as well as the public

End note
I was very fortunate to be given the opportunity to serve in the committee, and would like
to thank the other committee members for all the help and support that they have extended
to me. I wish the future committee all the best. I am very proud to be a part of the Raleigh

PR Officer Annual Report
The constitution stated that;
14.5 The Public Relations Officer shall:
14.5.1 Be responsible for all public relations matters of Raleigh KL including
recruitment drives for Introduction Weekends and public
exhibitions/awareness campaigns; and
14.5.2 Ensure that there is ample material for public distribution and also for
fundraising purposes.
Besides what was stated in the constitution, as the Public Relations Officer I have also
attempted to;
Create maximum awareness and publicity for Raleigh KL activities and any other
events initiated by Venturers to be and supported by Raleigh KL.
Manage activities by Raleigh KL, and any other publicity effort to introduce
Raleigh KL to its target audience
Internal communication, communication between Raleigh KL Committee and its
members through Raleigh KL Official Website, Yahoo! Groups, and blog; External
Communication, communication between Raleigh KL and any other third parties
(eg: sponsors, external helpers, visitors, the public and other Raleigh International
Support Group) through Press Releases and other supporting PR initiatives.
Being a PR practitioner myself, I understand the importance of PR initiatives to assist an
organization reach out to its target audience. Hence, my major role is to explore any
opportunities to publicize Raleigh KLs effort in sending youths to expeditions.
Our main publicity means is through monthly meetings, roadshows in educational
institutions, collaborations with other organizations, announcements during Introduction
Weekend, media interview with Ex-venturers and some other exposure that comes along
the way.
I worked closely with Christal Loh, PR Officer 2, to compile a set of materials for display
whenever we have public events. For instance, expedition magazines, updated Raleigh KL
brochures, and expedition photo slideshow. These materials serve as a significant tool to

further introduce Raleigh KL to a wider range of audience, such as potential venturers,
sponsors, and the public who are interested to know more about Raleigh KL.
Realising that online media is somehow the most efficient and cost effective way to
promote our activities, I am assigned to update our blog periodically. There is also a team
of regular bloggers and administrators who help me maintain the blog. I would like to
thank Christal, CK, Kar Lye, Zhi Yong, Li Vyen, Su Lan and other active members who
always write about Raleigh KL activities (Yink Heay, Li Ling, Li Ern, Shu Woan & etc.)
We also depend a lot on Facebook to send out notices regarding monthly meets,
fundraising activities, IW and other Raleigh related events.
I provided PR support for Introduction Weekend (IW). I drafted press releases for IW
October 08 and IW June 09. Due to work commitments, I was unable to pitch for media
coverage. Hence, IW Officer has assigned a few staff to help me with media pitching.
Once again, I would like to thank Shu Woan and Jeslie for their great effort in persuading
the media to publish IW notices. IW press releases were featured in The Star, The Sun,
Mix FM and other online portals.
In November 2008, Raleigh KL hosted Raleigh International 4th
Asia Regional Conference
and I was in charge of media liaison and managing PR related materials. I drafted a media
invite and disseminated it to relevant media. After the event, I disseminated post event
release and images. My job scope includes collating media kits and door gifts for the press
and the guests. Although no media attended the conference, I am glad that I made full use
of my expertise to support Raleigh KL. I also managed to guide other members on the
protocol of dealing with the media.
Christal and I always seek for opportunity to promote Raleigh KL as a youth development
NGO. Thus, we decided to participate in Youth09 event in January 2009. I supported
Christal in terms of liaising with the organiser, arranging man power to be stationed at
Raleigh KL booth, presenting about Raleigh KL during the time slot given and distributing
brochures. It is an opportunity to practice my event management and presentation skills. I
gained a lot more confidence to speak to the public.
In addition, I have initiated two monthly meetings in September and November 2008
which was held at Bandar Harapan and Tasik Titiwangsa respectively. I contacted the
person in charge of Bandar Harapan and Persatuan Sukan Kenu Kuala Lumpur to arrange
for agenda and activities of the meetings. Thanks to Shi Wei, Su Lan and Cathy who
helped me with registration when I was busy at work. Both meetings received positive
feedback from the members.

Throughout these 12 months, I enjoyed serving in the committee as I have very supportive

soft skills besides sharpening my PR skills. All of them, especially Shih Chung who
inspired me to fully utilise my capability in Raleigh KL, deserve a BIG thank you. It is
great to be part of the Raleigh family. Each of you in the committee term 08/09 means

PR Officer Annual Report
It has been a wonderful year working hand-in-hand with this small immediate family of
mine. PR Officer 2 this term was working towards Raleigh UKs change of branding.
Majority of my workload focused on Raleigh KL new branding. Designing and producing
new collaterals for Raleigh KL were my priority and aims. To name a few, they are
Raleigh KLs buntings, membership dry fast T-shirts, brochures, banners, name cards and
stickers.
Early on this year, I have also coordinated participants from Malaysia, majority whom are
Raleigh KL members to participate in Raleigh Hong Kongs Mountain Marathon. A total
of 12 Malaysians participated.
It has also been a great pleasure and non-pleasure working together with this small family,
special thanks to Mr. Loh Shih Chung who has guided me and the rest of the team to work
as a team. He might be crazy, high and extremely vibrant at times, but his efforts would
not be less remembered by all of us.
It was a great Committee Team working together for Raleigh KL, which we had all
contributed out our time, efforts and moments shared with a happy heart. Wishing next
terms committee all the best and to give back to our community to the very best of our
ability.

members who enter logs room will be able to find the item they intend to look for.
Once in a blue moon, I went up to logs room to do some clean up and update the
logs list.
Labelled all the tents (flysheet, base, skeleton and bag) accordingly so that each
tent is recognizable and to prevent lost.
Created a new logs list.
Bought new items for logistics.
Successfully found a cheaper way to waterproof our Raleigh tents by using cooking
oil and turpentine. Using ratio 2 to 1.
Collected repaired tents from Evergreen cheras outlet and sent 2 three men tents
which have broken skeletons for repair.(havent collected it from Evergreen.)
Acted as the logistics head for Oct 08 IW.
Oversee logistics head of June09 IW.
Responsibility to pass to next Logistics Officer
Constantly look for a suitable place to be the next logistics room. Logistics room at
Bukit Jalil is too far away and in case PokLii( owner of logistics room) plans to
shift.
Produce an electronic RENTAL FORM, where members of Raleigh KL who wish
to borrow logs from Raleigh ought to fill up. The usage of the form is to make

sure members who borrowed Raleighs logs will return the stuff in its original
condition and be responsible of the stuff him/her borrowed. It is also useful to
keep track of who is the borrower.
Waterproof the tents perior to IW or any outdoor events.
Make sure/educate members on how to use Raleigh logs in a correct way and
careful manner in order to protect it from getting spoil easily. Especially during
IW staff training and IW.
Collect our tents from Evergreen.(have to poke the workers there.)
Duplicate logs keys and pass it to the president/someone is always around when
logs officer is not available or not in KL.
Keep track of every Raleigh items and update logs list very often.
My experience
First of all, Id like to thank Raleigh KL to have given me a chance to serve as the logistics
officer of Raleigh KL. When I was elected to be the logistics officer of term 08/09, I
wasnt even a Venturer who has been to any expedition.
Being part of the committee rather than a member, has given me a deeper understanding of
Raleigh and the opportunity to work with other dedicated volunteers. Working with these
young adults is always very different from working with my university friends. I learnt my
weakness, and develop from the negatives, like what my sisters favourite quote : Life is
like photography, you develop from the negatives. As a logistics officer, I learnt more
about outdoor gears and can have chances to play with the new stuff. Apart of taking
care of logistics, Im glad to gain experiences by taking in charge of some small events
like road shows, exhibition in ARC, green booth in Generation Green and etc. It is always
a great escapism from my studies and participated in all these activities/meetings in order
to get extra knowledge and fun as well that I couldnt get from the uni.
This term has finally come to an end and the Raleigh family is definitely something that
has influenced my life and perspective. Lastly, I want to take this chance to say a BIG BIG
thank you to our president, Shih Chung and fellow colleagues who guided me along the
way. THANK YOU.

Fundraising Officer Annual Report
The constitution states that;
14.7 The Fundraising Officer shall:
14.7.1 Primarily, be responsible for obtaining corporate sponsorship for Venturers and
Raleigh KL; and
14.7.2 Be responsible for coordinating fundraising efforts for Venturers.
As Fundraising Officer I have also attempted to:
Assist the fundraising progress of potential venturers going on expedition
Liaise with potential sponsors (e.g. company, organisation) for projects or activities
undertaken by Raleigh KL
Provide assistance, clarification and assurance to the public on issues involving
funds for expeditions and fundraising activities
Obtain and provide the latest information on expedition fees
Activities / Achievements
Upon my return to Kuala Lumpur after representing Raleigh KL to the Raleigh HK
Mountain Marathon (RIMM), we had a vision to run a similar modelled event with the
objective as an annual fundraiser for Raleigh KL. As a start, we have helped to oversee a
venturer fundraising effort in a form of an adventure race. The experience proved valuable
as there were a few lessons to be learned when running a full scaled event like the RIMM.
However, due to unexpected academic commitments, I had to leave the committee in the
middle of my term. Thus, plans to hold our very own RIMM is still pending.
Discussions for potential funding from CIMB Bank on various community and
environmental project to be organised by Raleigh has been ongoing. Liaison was done
with Ms Sharifah Nur Izma, Project Manager of the Community Link CSD strategy
department in CIMB Bank. Upon the review of CIMB Banks project criteria and funding
method, project proposal was submitted. The projects are still pending.
15 venturers for various expeditions to Sabah, including the 5-week programs had
successfully completed their fundraising activities. Potential venturers were briefed and

made clear of the limitations and the objectives of the fundraising event. Abuse of funds is
strictly not allowed. Constant monitoring was done and assistance was provided where
necessary.
Last but not least, I would like to thank the rest of the committee for all their support
throughout my term. Special thanks to the members as well who have lent their hand in
making this term a success. Keep up the good work, and all the best to the future

Introduction Weekend Officer Annual Report
The constitution stated that;
14.8 The Introduction Weekend Officer shall:
14.8.1 Be responsible for coordinating and planning the execution of Introduction
Weekends by the Introduction Weekend team formed especially for running
Introduction Weekends; and
14.8.2 Be responsible for advising and, when necessary, leading entire Introduction
Weekend team.
I would like to start my annual Introduction Weekend Officers report by thanking the
Raleigh family for all their support and help. This has indeed been a life changing
experience and I could not have asked for more for all the things that I have learnt. Before
my tenure as the officer, I have executed one Introduction Weekends on behalf of Justin
David who was the Introduction Weekend Officer last term. During my tenure as the
officer, I have executed two Introduction Weekends.

this IW. Participant fee was increased from RM35 to RM50. Some new arrangement of
equipment transferring and IW schedule were introduced and proved to be working better
than previous arrangement. Game facilitation was considered good, and facilitation
debrief found to be very useful. Overall IW schedule was on track.
Comment:
A group of six to seven participants was found to be too small, eight to ten participants in a
group would be ideal. Coordinators may need to learn not let participants having too much
free time throughout the weekend. More effort need to stress to avoid last minutes pulled

Mark and Yolanda, representatives from Raleigh Sabah joined this IW. Game facilitation
was all good and number of participants going to expedition after IW is significant.
Preparation was done well. Schedule was on track except on Sunday. Delay on Sunday
causing a change of venue for closing ceremony to be held in IYC instead of campsite, but
plan B was executed well and IW ended peacefully.
Comment:
Its good to end IW closing ceremony in IYC as it looks more professional. More efforts
need to be done to bring down the cost. Perhaps introducing staff fee may bring down the
cost. There are still last minutes pulled out participants, more efforts need to carry out in
this area. Although Sunday arrangement was done nicely but there is still room of
improvement to smoothen the flow on Sunday.

Preparation was done well. There was one staff training conducted. A staff fee of RM10

ration, pro and cons apply, both are fine to choose. Closing ceremony was held in IYC
and IW ending time was changed to 6pm instead of 4pm.
Comment:
Schedule on Sunday was done well and improved compare to last two IW, but it can be
further improve. Proposed snack for everyone to serve in campsite around 1pm rather than
4pm at IYC. Staff fee can be further increase as cost per head for staff is much higher than
fee. IWO had verbal agreement with Jabatan Perhutanan Daerah Hulu Selangor that this is
the last time IW to be held at this campsite, thus next IW will be held in a brand new
campsite.
Lastly, I would again like to thank the whole committee whom by far has influenced me
the most. The games and the message on what our Introduction Weekend brings to the
participants is really deep and positive, Raleigh has a bright future based on all the
dedication that each staff member demonstrated during all Introduction Weekends.
I am very pleased to have held this role and this is my word of wisdom for the next taker;
my advice for the next IW officer would be to fully dedicate him/her-self to the role that
he/she has agreed to take up. The biggest or the main essence that an IW officer would
need to embrace is time management and detailed plan execution.
Introduction Weekends are by far the trademark Raleigh event and to run this program it
does not only take good leadership charisma but the will to engage with people with
different diversity and mindset.
Members of Raleigh are always helpful with their expertise and experience but nonetheless
it is not a must to follow these filial brothers/sisters. The officer needs to adapt his/her
sense of belonging to the role and all decision making is solely granted to the title holder.

Expedition Officer Annual Report
The constitution stated that;
14.4.9 The Expedition Officer shall be responsible for all matters relating to Raleigh
International expeditions including distributing the latest schedule of expeditions and
liasing with Raleigh International Trust expedition desk officers to register Venturers for
local or international Raleigh International expeditions.
The new expeditions in Sabah, namely the 4-week expedition & 7-week expedition were
being carried on from the past year. These shorter term expeditions were introduced by
Raleigh International to cater to those who could not commit the 10 weeks required by a
regular expedition, but still wish to experience expedition life. A 4-week expedition
includes one week of induction camp with 1 project phase, whilst the 7-week expedition
includes one week of induction camp and 2 project phases.
The format for the 5-week expedition includes 3 weeks of community or environmental
projects, with an additional week long adventure challenge in the last week of expedition.
The adventure challenge involves a series of physical challenges, with a final race to the
finish line on the last day. We had three venturers (Haslina Ali, See Ju-Vern, and Tham Li
Vyen) from Kuala Lumpur who participated in the Summer 5-week expedition in July
2008.
Despite the introduction of the shorter range expeditions, it remains the priority of Raleigh
KL to send venturers for the 10-week expeditions. Looking at the past-venturers record,
most have opted for the full 10-weeks expedition instead.
For the Autumn 08 10-week expedition, Raleigh KL has a record-breaking highest number
of venturers (in recent 3 years) that totaled up to 7 venturers whom are Chai Lee Lee,
Cheong Zhi Yong, Dennis Gan, Farm Woon Chin, Ng Hui Mei, Selene Ng, and Yap Lu
Ying. As for the Spring 09 expedition, Raleigh KL had four representatives for 10-week
expedition (Chan Mun Mun, Chin Jia Yee, Chong Poh-E, and Teoh Shu Woan) and the
maiden representative for 4-week expedition (Roslyn Ruslan).
For the upcoming Summer 09 10-week expedition, we have already 3 confirmed venturers,
which was the product from the past few Introduction Weekends. It is great to know as
well that we are receiving great response for the Autumn 08 10-week expedition, with at
least 2 confirmed venturers and more to come.
During my term as the Expedition Officer, I managed to introduce a new gear-testing
hiking training to the Venturers who are scheduled to leave for expedition. This training

has proved to increase the level of fitness, as well as to assess the vital equipments used
during expedition such as the boots and rucksack. The training has proved useful because
it provides a testing opportunity for Venturer to learn how to adapt to their gears or have
measures to prevent from certain injury in expedition. Throughout the hike, it was also a
valuable time spent between co-Venturers as well as myself with the Venturers. I truly
enjoyed the journey of hiking up Nuang!
There is a definite increase in awareness about Raleigh expeditions among Raleigh KL
members, as it is the goal of the committee to create this awareness as much as we can in
Raleigh KL activities such as monthly meetings.
Other than the mentioned Expedition Officer responsibilities, I have also organised the
Logistics of the Raleigh Asia Regional Conference (RARC) back in November 2008. The
experience of organising such an international Raleigh event has been truly memorable
and remarkable as it involved dealing with Raleigh KL members as well as international
delegates from Sabah, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, as well as the UK. Thanks for all
who have helped out during the 4th
RARC!
Roadshows have been a regular event that I have been organising during my service in the
Raleigh committee. This time around, I have taken a step back to oversee a Nottingham
Uni Roadshow instead. To give a rough idea of the Roadshow, I have created a Roadshow
guideline to be shared by the organiser so that it serves as a checklist that can be further
updated for future use. During my two years spent working in the committee, I have come
to realise the importance of guideline documents, hence the creation. Great job done
with the Roadshow, Su Lan!
Having been able to serve in the committee as the Expedition Officer has been a truly
amazing year for me, with so many opportunities to explore and even more good times
shared with the Raleigh family. I am forever grateful for being able to cross path with so
many people, from an assortment of backgrounds. Without these people in my life, I
would not have such interesting colours painted in my white drawing pad. You guys have
been amazing to work with, I enjoyed every moment of fundraising, training, swim-
testing, and many more informal meet-ups!
Being in this post, allowed me to have the ultimate license to bug members to embark on
an expedition. Since my expedition 2 years ago, my personal adventure experience leaves
me such a lasting impression until now. Therefore, I strongly believe that young people
will have to Get Out There to exchange for real life lessons that will be cherished for the
many years to come. I will still continue my quest in sending people to expedition, in
literal words of being at the airport despite not being the Expedition Officer more.

A very sincere big thanks to Shih Chung who had been so extremely patient and absolutely
understanding throughout my tenure in Raleigh KL committee. Without this person, I
would not do half the things the way that I do now. Special thanks to CK (Projects Officer
08/09) for all the help and time spent in guiding the Venturers fundraising projects. The
committee team in Year 08/09 has been fantastic fun to work with and super supportive
colleagues. I wish every one of you all the best in your future journeys.

go to the upcoming committee. Have a Raleigh fun-tastic year!

As Projects Officer I have also attempted to:
Provide guidance and assistant to the IW teams in their PIW projects
Help out potential venturers for their fundraising activities and events
The following were activities and achievements throughout my term:
Revise the existing PIW projects guidelines;
Increase the variety of projects in the existing PIW projects list; and
Assist Raleigh members on projects and fundraising planning.
The following are suggestions for future Projects Officer:
Focusing on getting members to organise small scale projects;
Source for more projects partners in community, environmental and adventure
projects; and
Setting up a group to oversee the PIW projects.
A special note to thank all the team coordinators and staffs who volunteered to help out

Special Skills Officer Report
As stated in the constitution:
14.11 The Special Skills Officer shall be responsible for identifying and organising special
skills sessions that are beneficial to members of Raleigh KL.
The committee conducted a simple survey among members as well as several
brainstorming sessions in identifying various key skills that are beneficial to our members.
They can be generally classified as:
a. Hard skills Skills that are activity specific, technical and easily taught. Most of
the skills that appeal to members include outdoor activity skills eg kayaking,
survival skills, first aid skills, etc. These skills are usually handy to have in
specific situations.
b. Soft skills Usually viewed as harder to observe, quantify and measure. These
skills usually take longer time and require experience to master. However, soft
skills are much more useful in life as it is needed in everyday life. Examples of
soft skills are facilitation skills, communication skills, event management skills,
etc.
This committee has identified that Raleigh KL has more often than not provided avenues
in improving hard skills, and indeed it is one of the appeal of Raleigh KL to the public to
become members. Much focus though can be given to the soft skills department as they
can benefit everyone regardless of preference and ability, and they are much sought after
skills in running Introduction Weekends, Raleigh KLs most important activity.
Of course again training and trainers for hard skills are easier to come by as compared to
soft skills. I have constantly kept a look out for contacts and partners in helping to provide
training on the soft skills department. Thus far, the seniors of Raleigh KL has been most
helpful in conducting trainings especially IW facilitation & coordinator training. We are in
the midst of developing a good trend in passing down skills from the seniors to the current
generation of members and this should be maintained for the benefit of Raleigh KLs
future as a whole.

Specific projects that I have taken helm this year are:
a. 2008 Annual General Meeting in Gopeng, Perak.
I helped in organizing the 2008 AGM in Gopeng through the previous company I
worked at, Nomad Adventure Sdn Bhd. Activities include body rafting and high
ropes course.
b. November Monthly Meet at Sungai Pisang, Gombak
Half day visit to a waterfall that involves a half hour river trek.
c. April Monthly Meet at Sungai Lepuk, Ulu Langat.
Half day visit to a multi tiered waterfall that involves an hour plus jungle trek.
I wish to have achieved more for Raleigh KL in my current term but work and personal
commitments have prevented me from so. Though I believe that I do try to support and
provide assistance to the rest of the committee in their own projects and Raleigh KLs
general activities as much as I can.
I would like to thank the current committee members for the good times and difficult times
that weve shared this past year. It has been quite an experience being a committee
member in Raleigh KL, and I have to say that without serving in the committee, Raleigh
KL would not have meant as much to me as it does to me now. It has been my pleasure,
and I hope everyone else, committee or members, have had a blast too.
