Overview
bull The retirement of Mr Don Doan Recreation Manager Community Services was announced at the October 12 2011 meeting of Council
bull CW313-2011 resolved That the Citys Naming and Signage Committee be requested to identify and report back with options to appropriately recognize Don Doan for his long term service and contributions to the City of Brampton and his dedication to this Citys sports community and programs
bull The Citys Naming and Signage Committee considered Mr Doans contributions and dedication as well as his personal sporting interests and achievements
bull The Committee recommends that Council approve the renaming of the Professors Lake Trail to the Don Doan Trail in recognition of Mr Doans love of running marathons and his outstanding contributions to Brampton
Recommendations
1 THAT the report from Steve Bodrug Acting Manager Open Space Design and Construction Planning Design and Development dated May 31 2012 to the Committee of Council meeting of June 13 2012 re Recommendation Report shyRenaming of the Professors Lake Trail Ward 7 (File MOO-Naming) be received
2 THAT Mr Don Doans many years of proud and dedicated service in Brampton be recognized by renaming the Professors Lake Trail to the Don Doan Trail and that this name be used in all official signage and promotional material and
3 THAT staff be authorized to replace existing or add new signage where required in keeping with the City of Brampton visual design and wayfinding sign standards
Background
Don Doan started with the City May261976 and officially completed his tenure on May 312012 although his final day was October 242011
Mr Doans support and guidance whether advocating for the provision of facilities or assistance as a resource or advisor helped numerous youth and adult community sport groups achieved greatness locally provincially and nationally
In his time with the City Mr Doan was part of the team that developed South Fletchers Jim Archdekin Chris Gibson Ken Giles (in its many iterations) Brampton Soccer Centre Cassie Campbell Sesquicentennial Park Dixie407 Sports Park CreditviewSandalwood Sports Park Fairgrounds Park FCCC Sports Park and Sports Buildings numerous cricket pitches and countless other facilities (White Spruce Park Disc Frisbee Golf Park Norton fishing pond etc)
He was instrumental in the development of the Brampton Sports Alliance Brampton Cricket Alliance (Brampton Cricket Advisory Committee) the Brampton Soccer Advisory Committee Bramslammers Slowpitch Mens Recreational Soccer League BOSS (Speed Skaters) and numerous cricket clubs His work also included some fairly challenging and strategic alliances including the amalgamation of the Brampton and Chinguacousy Minor Hockey Associations and Brampton and Chinguacousy figure skating associations into one association for each sport
Aside from his work for the city Mr Doan made a name for himself with some of his other pursuits including marathon running Mr Doan has been a regular runner since 1978 and can often be seen running through the streets and trails of Brampton He has run 13 marathons including three trips to the famous Boston Marathon
He was quoted in the November 22011 edition of the Brampton Guardian as saying said my goal was to run aroundthe world The circumference of the world is 40074 miles and in20091 reached my goalsaid Doan who keeps records of each of his workouts My next goal is to go back he said as he continues to monitor his runs
Professors Lake Trail is named after the Professors Lake Park and the trail follows a linear park system from Victoria Park Arena on Avondale Boulevard north approximately 11 kilometres to Professors Lake on North Park Drive The Chinguacousy Wellness Centre and the Brampton Civic Hospital (William Osier Campus) are accessible north of Professors Lake via the sidewalk crossing at the lights on Bovaird Drive going north Trailhead signage for Professors Lake Trail is currently located at Victoria Park Arena Earnscliffe Recreation Centre Greenbriar Park and Professors Lake Recreation Centre

This has prompted the Citys Naming and Signage Committee to explore options to appropriately recognize Don Doan for his long term service and contributions to the City of Brampton The Naming and Signage Committee includes staff representatives from the Community Services Planning Design and Development and Buildings and Property Departments as well as staff from Corporate Communications and Clerks

The Naming and Signage Committee reviewed several naming options including parks sports facilities and sports fields In considering naming options it was determined by the committee to commemorate Mr Doans passion for running and name a portion of a City trail that he frequents as part of his marathon training
The Committee therefore concluded that the most suitable option would be to rename the Professors Lake Trail to the Don Doan Trail
